I’ll be spending the rest of my Sunday night in bed with The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson. This is book two in the Truly Devious series, and the first book was my last read in 2022. Was it a perfect book? No, but I was sucked in by the mysteries and simply couldn’t put it down. It’s safe to say that I really enjoyed it and I’m glad that I’m finally tackling this series that’s been on my TBR for ages!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

In New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnsonโ€™s second novel in the Truly Devious series, there are more twists and turns than Stevie Bell can imagine. No answer is given freely, and someone will pay for the truth with their life.

The Truly Devious caseโ€”an unsolved kidnapping and triple murder that rocked Ellingham Academy in 1936โ€”has consumed Stevie for years. Itโ€™s the very reason she came to the academy. But then her classmate was murdered, and her parents quickly pull her out of school. For her safety, they say. She must move past this obsession with crime.

Stevieโ€™s willing to do anything to get back to Ellingham, be back with her friends, and solve the Truly Devious case. Even if it means making a deal with the despicable Senator Edward King. And when Stevie finally returns, she also returns to David: the guy she kissed, and the guy who lied about his identityโ€”Edward Kingโ€™s son.

But larger issues are at play. Where did the murderer hide? Whatโ€™s the meaning of the riddle Albert Ellingham left behind? And what, exactly, is at stake in the Truly Devious affair? The Ellingham case isnโ€™t just a piece of historyโ€”itโ€™s a live wire into the present.

If you celebrate, Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„
I hope you’re having a wonderful time with your loved ones.

We’re back with another Sundays in Bed With… meme! This meme dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent your time curled up reading in bed with or which book you wish you had time to read today!

I’ll be spending the rest of my Sunday night in bed hopefully finishing The Geek Who Saved Christmas by Annabeth Albert. I’ve been making slow but steady progress with this read over the last few days and I’m enjoying parts of it, I think it’s cute, but it’s also not wowing me at the moment. Let’s see if that changes by the end!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

His grumpy neighbor needs some holiday sunshineโ€ฆ

Gideon Holiday is the perfect neighbor. Need a cup of sugar? Spare folding chair? Extra batteries? Heโ€™s always ready to help. And heโ€™s waited years for his hot, grumpy, silver fox neighbor, Paul, to need him. For anything. But this December, Gideon would be happy if he could just get the Scrooge-like Paul on board with the neighborhood holiday lights fundraiser.

Paul Frost has no intention of decking his halls or blazing any Yule logs. Even if his spunky bowtie-clad neighbor does look perfect for unwrapping, Paul would prefer to hide away until December is done. But when his beloved younger brother announces an unexpected visit, Paul needs all the trimmings for a festive homecomingโ€”and fast.

Luckily, Gideon is there with a color-coded plan to save Christmas. Soon Paulโ€™s hanging lights, trimming trees, and rolling out cookies. And steaming up his new flannel sheets with Gideon. How did that happen?

Itโ€™ll take some winter magic to preserve their happiness and keep these rival neighbors together longer than one holiday season.

The Geek Who Saved Christmas is a low-angst m/m holiday romance with a guaranteed happy ending. This grumpy/sunshine, neighbors-to-lovers, found family tale features two heroes in their forties figuring out that maybe their sexily-ever-after was right next door the whole time. It stands alone and is not connected to any of the authorโ€™s other universes. However, it does contain a heaping helping of the same emotions and steamy moments readers have come to expect!

I’ll be spending the rest of my Sunday in bed reading Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison. I’ve had this on my TBR for almost a year now and I thought I’d read it sooner in 2022 but then I saw it was a holiday(ish?) romance so I saved it for now. I have to admit it’s a little slow. I don’t know how I feel about Stella + I wish that it was dual POV cos I wanna know what Luka’s thinking!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Where the lovelight gleams…

A pasture of dead trees. A hostile takeover of the Santa barn by a family of raccoons. And shipments that have mysteriously gone missing. Lovelight Farms is not the magical winter wonderland of Stella Bloomโ€™s dreams.

In an effort to save the Christmas tree farm sheโ€™s loved since she was a kid, she enters a contest with instafamous influencer Evelyn St. James. With the added publicity and the $100,000 cash prize, she might just be able to save the farm from its financial woes. Thereโ€™s just one problem. To make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays, she lied on the application and said she owns Lovelight Farms with her boyfriend. Onlyโ€ฆ there is no boyfriend.

Enter best friend Luka Peters. He just came home for some hot chocolate, and somehow got a farm and a serious girlfriend in the process.

I spent a chunk of my Sunday reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. I’ve had this book on my shelf for years and the several attempts I’ve made to read it before have led nowhere until, quite possibly, now. I forgot that I had the audiobook so I’m reading along to that and it’s helped a lot! That first bit was โœจroughโœจ but so far, I’m feeling glad that I powered through.

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Six interlocking lives – one amazing adventure. In a narrative that circles the globe and reaches from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, Cloud Atlas erases the boundaries of time, genre and language to offer an enthralling vision of humanity’s will to power, and where it will lead us.

I spent a good chunk of my Sunday reading and eventually finishing The Holly Dates by Brittainy Cherry. It was a fun and cute holiday romance although it does cover some fairly serious topics so it wasn’t exactly the rom-com I expected. But I do think it’s a romance that’ll put you in a happy holiday mood!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

All she wanted for Christmas was a boyfriend for the holidaysโ€ฆ
All he wanted was for her to take her crappy first dates elsewhereโ€ฆ

Quirky Holly Jackson was unlucky in love, yet her romantic heart refused to give up her search for companionshipโ€”even after her fiancรฉ left her at the altar on Christmas Eve.

Grumpy restaurant owner Kai Kane wanted nothing to do with love after his last relationship crashed and burned. Romance was the last thing on his mind. Unfortunately for him, when an eccentric Holly kept entering his restaurant nightly with a different first date, his annoyance grew.

When Kai volunteered to help Holly find a suitor it was for one reason only: to get her out of his restaurant and on to a second date with someone at a different location.

Once Kai became Hollyโ€™s dating coach, her confidence grew.

It was all going great until Kai became increasingly jealous of the connection Holly developed with another man. The more Holly fell for Kaiโ€™s pick for her, the more overprotective he became.

Kai quickly realized that all wasnโ€™t fair when it came to love and the holidays.

He was going to have to step up his game if he wanted a shot at the ultimate prizeโ€”being Hollyโ€™s favorite date.

*The Holly Dates is a steamy, full-length romantic comedy that will put you right in the holiday spirit.*

โš ๏ธ CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS

Childhood abandonment and abusive parents (recounted), infidelity (on-page and recounted), manipulative gaslighting partner, body shaming (one incident on-page), cancer (former partner of one of the main characters)

I’ll be spending part of my Sunday in bed with The Christmas Clash by Suzanne Park. It’s a YA contemporary romance set during the holidays and features the rivals-to-lovers trope. I’m at 24% and so far it’s been okayโ€”there’s something a little off in their dynamic but I can’t exactly pinpoint what… I’ve read two books by this author and one was a hit while the other was a miss, so I’m looking forward to seeing what this will end up being!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Who’s naughty and nice at Riverwood Mall? In this hilarious holiday rom-com, two rivals get together to save their families’ livelihoods, and Christmas, too!

Chloe Kwon can’t stand Peter Li. It’s always been that way. Their families don’t get along either: their parents operate rival restaurants in the Riverwood Mall food courtโ€•Korean food for the Kwons and Chinese food for the Lis. Now it’s the holiday season and Chloe’s the photographer at the mall’s Santa Land, and Peter works at the virtual reality North Pole experience right across the atrium. It’s all Chloe can do to avoid Peter’s smug, incredibly photogenic face.

But it turns out the mall is about to be sold to a developer and demolished for condos. Eviction notices are being handed out right before Christmas. Their parents don’t know what to do, and soon Chloe and Peter realize that the two of them need to join efforts to try to save the mall. Just when it seems like they can put aside their differences and work closely (very closely) together, they discover that the Kwon and Li feud goes far deeper than either of them realize…

I’ll be spending my Sunday in bed with Witches Get Stitches by Juliette Cross. I’m on a roll with this Stay a Spell series and this is the third of six! I don’t know why I’m in such a paranormal romance reading mood since it’s not my usual but I’m enjoying the heck out of this series. It’s comforting, fun, and mostly “no thoughts, just vibes” (and I don’t mean that negatively at all!) and it’s perfect for me right now!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Violet Savoie has a plan. A dream, rather. To open her own tattoo shop, which caters to supernaturals in need of permanent charms. As a powerful Seer, she has the potent magic to cast every kind of spell. Except the kind to give werewolves control over their beastly side. And her business partner Nico needs help in the worst kind of way.

Nico Cruz has a secret. A motive, rather. To subtly stalk and seduce Violet until she finally recognizes they are fated to be together. Ever since their heated encounter in Austin on New Yearโ€™s Eve two years earlier, heโ€™s been dying to get his handsโ€”and his tongueโ€”back on her body. He knows a woman like Violet canโ€™t be courted in the usual way. Luckily, Nico has no scruples about misbehaving to get what he wants.

But when his former pack roams into town, and an old friend is far too interested in Violet, his focus shifts to the threat venturing into his territory. Nico may come across as the quiet, broody one, but the intruders are about to regret stepping foot in New Orleans. And when Violet goes missing, no charm or spell can keep Nicoโ€™s wolf at bay.

I’ve spent all of my Sunday in bed reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. I’ve literally only started this morning and have been patchily reading it between bouts of sleep but I’m enjoying it so far. The writing is beautiful and so descriptive so I’m excited to keep reading and to see what all the hype is about.

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young womanโ€™s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyinโ€™s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dreamโ€”striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magicโ€”where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

I’ll be spending my Sunday night continuing A Ghost in Shining Armor by Therese Beharrie. Sadly, I’m not connecting with this one at all and I’m struggling to get through it. I think this could be, in large part, due to my current reading mood and head space because nothing is really clicking with me at the moment and it’s very frustrating. I was kind of tempted to DNF this when I felt like I wasn’t making any progress, but since it’s an ARC, I’m going to do my best to get through it.

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Once hauntedโ€ฆ

Gemma Daniels has never been quite the โ€œdown to earthโ€ woman her adoptive parents raised her to be. She even has a unique gift: she can see ghostsโ€”and she likes helping them settle their unfinished business. But the hotter-than-hot stranger she impulsively kisses on a bet is not only a phantom, he’s determined to help her. And the only way Gemma can explain his presence is to pretend theyโ€™re a real-life coupleโ€ฆ

Twice shyโ€ฆ

I’ll be spending the rest of my Sunday in bed continuing my read of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen. Everyone told me I’d love this book and they right because I am LOVING it so much! The banter, the hate-to-love vibes, the secret pen pal letter exchanges, the side characters and this whole world Bannen created. I started this morning and I’m at 53% and trying to not rush through too quickly cos I want to savour this dynamicโ€”this has favourite potential, friends!

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

Hart Ralston is a demigod and a marshal, tasked with patrolling the wasteland of Tanria. The realm the exiled old gods once called home is now a forsaken place where humans with no better options or no better sense come seeking adventure or spoils, but more often end up as drudges: reanimated corpses inhabited by the souls of those whoโ€™ve died in Tanria before. Hart tells himself that his job is simple: neutralize the drudges with a quick zap to the appendix and deliver them back to polite society at the nearest undertakerโ€™s, leaving the whys and hows of the drudge problem for men without the complexities of a god in their family tree. But working alone, Hartโ€™s got nothing but time to ponder exactly those questions heโ€™d most like to avoid.

Too much time alone is the opposite of Mercy Birdsallโ€™s problem. Since her fatherโ€™s decline, sheโ€™s been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son undertakers afloat in small-town Eternityโ€”despite definitely not being a son, and in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart Ralston, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest. The workโ€™s not the problemโ€”Mercyโ€™s good at it, better than any other Birdsallโ€”but keeping all her familyโ€™s plates spinning singlehandedly, forever, isnโ€™t how Mercy envisioned her future. After yet another run-in with the sharp-tongued Mercy, Hart considers she might have a point about his utter loneliness being a bit of a liability. In a moment of sentimentality, he pens a letter addressed simply to โ€œA Friend,โ€ and entrusts it to a nimkilim, an anthropomorphic animal messenger with an uncanny connection to the gods, (and in Hartโ€™s case, a bit of a drinking problem). Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born.

If only Hart knew heโ€™s been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him mostโ€“Mercy. As the two unlikely pen pals grow closer, the truth about Hartโ€™s parentage and the nature of the drudges creeps in. And suddenly their old animosity seems so small in comparison to what they might be able to do: end the drudges forever. But at what cost?
