Bookish Naughty or Nice Tag!

Since I decided on Tuesday that it’s time to bring some more festive feels to my blog, I’ve decided to kick off Tag Thursday with Jenniely’s Bookish Naughty Or Nice Book Tag! I’m sure the majority of you already follow her by now, but if you haven’t seen her posts, you should definitely check it out! Her content is top and her graphics are always gorgeous and absolute goals 😍I wasn’t tagged in this one but I saw it on Jenn’s page and then I saw Sammie did it too, so I thought I’d jump aboard too. So, let’s get to it!

The Rules

  • Tag and link the person who tagged you.
  • Link back to the creator (Jenniely).
  • Tick or cross off the ones you’ve done!
  • Tag 10 people!

Received an ARC and not reviewed it ✘

NAUGHTY

Shots fired! I repeat, shots fired! Gah, my guilt alone would send me straight to the naughty list but it’s kind of comforting to know I’m not alone in this. I’m still doing my best to get them all read though!

The Identity Crisis Book Tag!

I stumbled across this post on Loretta’s page (which by the way is awesome and you should defo check it out if you haven’t yet!) several months ago and it looked like so much fun that I couldn’t wait to try it myself. But of course with life, reading, and all the awesome tags out there, I’ve only just now got around to doing it! It involves one of the things that I secretly really love to do on the interwebs: take quizzes! Yes, I’m a quiz-taker-lover! Especially when it’s a book related quiz but also pretty much any rando quiz I come across; you can bet that I’d love to do it, if I haven’t already done it 😂 This tag is then pretty perfect for me! Here’s what Loretta has to say about her tag:

“Now here we are! All of these quizzes tell you who you would be if you were in that specific universe. I tried to stick with the same quiz makers as much as possible for the sake of consistency, but was forced to stray on a few of them. Each fandom title links back to the original quiz I took (at this point you’re like, please for the love of god, stop saying the word quiz), so you all can take them too. So go forth and prosper. May the odds be ever in your favor. MWAHAHAHAHA!!”

With that said… Let’s get to it! First up are THE RULES:

  1. Take all the quizzes down below and record your answers somehow. I decided to just copy the text from each quiz and paste it into my post, but screenshots work too! Whatever floats your goat (Yes goat. I SAID WHAT I SAID).
  2. NO CHEATING. You get one shot to take each quiz my friends. I’m watching you. ∗Suspicious squinty eyes∗
  3. Use this post to give credit to the creator Loretta @ The Laughing Listener or tag me on twitter @LaughnListener so I can see everyone’s answers!!
  4. Tag some friends to spread the fun!

The Reader’s Problems Book Tag

This is another one that I wasn’t tagged to do but I saw it ages ago on Hâf’s page and decided that I felt like doing an easy Wednesday tag (I’m realizing that a weekly trend might be developing now)! So let’s get going:

You have 20,000 books on your TBR, how do you decide what to read next?

I’m a mood reader so it would depend entirely on what mood I’m in? Honestly, I’ve been thinking of making a TBR jar where I write down all the books I own on a slip of paper, put them in the jar and randomly pick one every time I finish a read. But again, mood reader!

The Book Snob Tag!

Despite having a million tags that I was actually tagged in but haven’t done yet *cough* I saw this tag on Emer’s page a while ago and decided that it was a fun quick tag that I wanted to do! Don’t you just love book tags?!

ADAPTATION SNOB: Do you always read the book before seeing the film?

I’d be lying if I said “yes, always” because *looks at LOTR* but for the most part I do! There are so many adaptations (both films and shows) that I haven’t watched yet because I haven’t read the book and I’ve convinced myself that I’ll want to read the book first so, yeah. I swear I’ll get to all you beauties eventually!

FORMAT SNOB: You can only choose 1 format in which to read books for the rest of your life. Which one do you choose: physical books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

BUT WHY? I want to say ebooks because I travel so much and I’d love to be able to keep all my books with me wherever I go for always, but… Do I really think I could ever give up physical books? Nup! Physical books it is then! 😂

SHIP SNOB: Would you date or marry a non-reader?

UM… In a perfect world I’d only date people who read lol I mean, that’d be really ideal. But… I guess I’m not opposed to dating a non-reader IF they’re understanding about what books and the book community mean to me! If a person can’t support me with my bookish love then buh-bye. Sorry not sorry–ain’t nobody got time for that!

GENRE SNOB: You have to ditch one genre – never to be read again for the rest of your life. Which one do you ditch?

Hah, this isn’t hard because I am the ultimate chicken and I rarely, if ever, read this genre: I would ditch horror in a heartbeat! 😅

UBER GENRE SNOB: You can only choose to read from one genre for the rest of your life. Which genre do you choose?

I… I don’t know! Part of me really wants to say contemporary romance because I’M A SUCKA FOR DA LOVES but I’m gonna go with contemporary fiction. Even though I feel like I’m betraying my fantasy love by saying that, please see Darcy gif above and forgive me 😅

COMMUNITY SNOB: Which genre do you think receives the most snobbery from the bookish community?

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: ROMANCE! Why do people have such a strong dislike towards romance? I mean, my reading about romance doesn’t affect you so why does it matter what I enjoy? I will say that I’m glad to see more non-romance readers opening up to reading the genre lately and finding that they enjoy it! It’s a sweet satisfaction 😏

Now wasn’t that a fun tag?
Don’t forget to tag me if you do this tag so I can see your answers too!

This or That Book Tag

A little while back I was nominated by the lovely Leelynn @ Sometimes Leelynn Reads to do the This or That Book Tag! As you well know by now I’m pretty bad at doing tags on time but I do get around to them eventually 😅 Not sure where the original comes from but I’ve seen a few people do it and I’m excited to join the ranks. LET’S DO THIS!

READING ON THE BED OR COUCH?

BED ALL THE WAY! If I had a comfy couch I’d probably read on there most of the time but as it is, it’s covered with all the books that … I can’t fit on my shelves anymore 😬

male or female main character?

Hmm… That’s a tough one. I like both male and female main characters but I’m going to have to go with female. I usually relate to these characters more but I realize the majority of my books have female MCs! Not that I have anything against male MCs, obviously.

sweet or salty snacks while reading?

This is gonna sound like a weird realisation but… I’ve been figuring out lately that I’m much more of a salty snack panda than a sweet one! Sure, I like my chocolates, but gimme some crisps or better yet chips or cheese and crackers or salty popcorn any day! Salt bae got me covered LOL

trilogies or quartets?

Trilogies! I’m not mad at quartets but I like to get through series quickly (most of the time)! I also prefer to not wait forever for all the books to come out if it’s a new series, so the shorter it is the better it is for my impatient ass! 😂

READING AT NIGHT OR IN THE MORNING?

I’m a night owl, plus I have major sleep issues, but most of my free time is also after work, so I’m usually doing the most reading at night!

FIRST OR THIRD POV?

I don’t mind both POVs… But I like first POV more? I think? I’m so indecisive omg lol

LIBRARIES OR BOOKSTORES?

OK, first of all I’m gonna say that I wish they had libraries here because they don’t and it makes me sad. So obviously, bookstores. I mean, my bank hates it but I don’t! LOL

BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH OR CRY?

I’m a sucker for a good cry so I’d probably pick up a book that’ll make me cry. I mean, who doesn’t love a book that’d make you cry, right?! It makes you feel all the feels and you build such a connection with the characters too. Love it!

BLACK OR WHITE BOOK COVERS?

I love white book covers. Especially when they’re brand new — it’s like they’re sparkly even though they’re not?! They picture so well too. I love white covers 😍

character driven or plot driveN?

OH, THIS IS SO HARD! 😅 I think I’m going to have to go with… Character driven! It really does depend most of the time, but I think if I can connect to the characters (and I mean really connect to them) then it’s okay if the plot is blah. Even if the plot is good, I will find myself bothered if I don’t connect to any of the characters of if I find them annoying / boring.

And that’s it folks! WASN’T THAT FUN!? I’m feeling a little lazy at the moment so I’m just going to say that if you feel like doing this tag then…

I TAG YOU!!!

Are You Ready for Sweater Weather: The Autumn Tag!

Technically it’s still Autumn, right? So while I’m late with answering this tag I didn’t miss the party completely with this Autumn Tag, right?! 😂 I love being tagged in tags but I’m sorry I’m so shoddy at answering them! Thanks to Sara @ The Bibliophagist, Jen @ Nen & Jen, and E @ Local Bee Hunter’s Little Nook for tagging me on this one! I swear I was born in the wrong country because my favorite season is Autumn, so woe is me for living in the tropics! I’m hoping that one day I’ll once again live in a country that has more than two seasons (hot and really hot and humid) 🙄

All credit for the graphics below go to Jenn @ Jenniely, the creator of this lovely tag!

The Rules

  • Answer the questions.
  • Link back to the creator (Jenniely).
  • Tag other people!

Hot Chocolate – What is your comfort book?

My answer for all time: Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. I know others find it really weird that this is my “comfort book” but reading this brings me comfort like no other every. single. time 💜

Pumpkin Carving – What is your favorite creative outlet?

I love playing around with graphic design stuff! I’m self-taught on Adobe InDesign and Illustrator (thanks to the power of YouTube!) and I love being able to create graphics for both work and my blog, despite not being able to draw for shit 🤣 I’m still pretty much a noob compared to real graphic designers, but it’s so much fun to experiment!

Falling Leaves – Changes that appear bad but that you secretly love

I’m going to have to agree with Sara on this one: moving. Moving can be scary and stressful AF, but it can also be really rewarding. I only have to look at my whole life experience as a Third Culture Kid to remember this! There’s always so much room for opportunities and endless possibilities when you move and ‘start fresh’. It’s as exciting as it is terrifying 🙂

Pumpkin Spiced Latte – Something you love that others tend to judge

Romance. I’ve been judged so hard by many people who look at me with such beady eyed judgement when I say that I love romance (or when they see that I have romance books on my shelf). I just don’t understand why it bothers people so much or what even makes them feel they have the right to judge me for anything? Lol

Bonfire Night – What makes you explode with joy?

Naming one thing would be impossible! Delectable food, scrumptious drinks, amazing music and dancing, reading the night away, the smell of new/old books, engaging with all you lovely book people, watching a great show/movie, spending time with my loves… All of these make me explode with joy!

Fright Night – Favorite scary book or movie

We all know that I’m the worst when it comes to scary stuff. A lot of people (annoyingly) try to force me to watch scary things but that’s where I toe a hard line. It’s no dice, home slice. That said, I did read one scary book last month that I surprisingly really enjoyed and that was Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall! Color me definitely surprised because I couldn’t put that one down and I was terrified the whole time!

Halloween Candy – Favorite thing to eat

Wow, as if I could only choose one thing for this! How?! I will say that one thing that I could probably eat every day for the rest of my life is Japanese food (I won’t limit myself to just sushi specifically but sushi for always)!

Scarves – your Autumn ‘must have’ accessory

Well… Scarves I guess? Lol I don’t really wear accessories but I do love giant scarves. Oh, but I also love beanies! A cute beanie and a scarf if it’s cold enough… Yaas! I really wish it wasn’t blazing hot while I write this because I wanna get cozy with these autumn accessories 😅

Fire – A book or film that burns your soul

What does this even mean? Lol does burning my soul mean something that makes me feel all the feels? I’ll take it as that. Tough question but I’ll go with The Nevernight Chronicle! This series though… And I haven’t even read Darkdawn yet–I’m too scared of all the burning my soul will experience! 😂 😭

Toffee Apples – A book or film that seems one thing but really has a different inside

The first book that comes to mind is Frankly In Love by David Yoon. I recently finished it and it was completely different to what I expected. It’s marketed as romance and while there are elements of it, I feel marketing it as that really did it a disservice. Not surprised people didn’t like it since they went in expecting something light and fluffy. I ended up really enjoying Frank Li’s story but the content is on a completely different vibe from the romance it’s ‘meant’ to be 😅

And that’s a wrap, folks! 🎬 Ooh, that was so much fun. I love a great tag and answering all these questions have really got me in that autumn mood where I want to cozy up in bed under my duvet with a book!

I Tag

It’s okay if you don’t like tags or don’t feel like doing this one. No pressure at all! Also, even if you’re not tagged and want to do it, consider yourself officially tagged! Don’t forget to link back so I can see your answers 😉

The Book Blogger Memory Tag

I wasn’t tagged by Emer @ A Little Haze to do this tag (lol) but I saw it on her page and knew that I wanted to hop right on it because not only did it look like fun but my memory sucks major suckage and I wanted to see how it would do in a challenge like this! So, without further ado, let’s do this.

The Rules

You must answer these questions without looking anything up on the internet and without looking at your bookshelves! (Pretty simple, right?)

1. NAME A BOOK WRITTEN BY AN AUTHOR CALLED MICHAEL

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
I’m finding myself just a little pathetic for getting so excited about getting this one straight out the bat.

2. NAME A BOOK WITH A DRAGON ON THE COVER

GAME OF THRONES! I mean… Obviously? Lol

3. NAME A BOOK ABOUT A CHARACTER CALLED GEORGE

Curious George!
You know, the children’s book with the curious and entirely cheeky little monkey called George? I really don’t know how this was the first book that came to mind lol

4. NAME A BOOK WRITTEN BY AN AUTHOR WITH THE SURNAME SMITH

Welp, I spoke too soon. I cannot for the life of me recall any author with the last name Smith! *walks away grumbling in shame and defeat*

5. NAME A BOOK SET IN AUSTRALIA

IT’S THAT BOOK BY BILL BRYSON! Is it called Australia? Down Under? Does this count as a correct answer?! I hope so… I know he wrote a book about Australia…

6. NAME A BOOK WITH THE NAME OF A MONTH IN THE TITLE

The Ten Thousand Doors of January! Woot, I’m so glad that I literally just bought this book on BD not 10 minutes ago!

7. NAME A BOOK WITH A KNIFE ON THE COVER

My Lovely Wife!!
I know there are different covers for this one but I’m thinking about the white one where the wife is holding the knife and you see the reflection of hubbo in it. I have the other boring one on my Kindle lol

8. NAME A BOOK WITH THE WORD ‘ONE’ IN THE TITLE

One Day in December 😍 BAHA! I almost got stuck with this one. Thank you, brain!

9. NAME A BOOK WITH AN EPONYMOUS TITLE

The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell
Wow, I didn’t think this would be the first one to pop into my head because I haven’t read it yet but I’ve been meaning to read it for ages and *just* downloaded it onto my Kindle library!

10. NAME A BOOK TURNED INTO A MOVIE

The Shining by Stephen King
Yay for having just mentioned this book on my TTT this week! Good thing too because sadly I’m pretty sure my brain would’ve scrambled thinking too hard about this one and then blanking out lol

AAND THAT’S IT! I think I actually did OK? I missed two… But yeah, that’s better than I thought I would do 😅 That was totally fun! Feel free to do this tag too and link back to me so that I can see your answers!

The Guilty Reader Book Tag!

Despite having a million tags that I was actually tagged in but haven’t done yet *cough*, I decided that I wanted to do this Guilty Reader Book Tag that I saw on Anniek @ Anniek’s Library a few months ago! It looked like a fun and quick tag to answer and I’m always all for that, especially since I always end up taking forever to answer tags lol

Have you ever re-gifted a book that you’ve been given?

Nope! At least, not that I can remember. But I honestly don’t have a lot of people who read in my life so I wouldn’t re-gift a book as a gift because I don’t really have anyone to give it to 😅 I’ve re-gifted other non-book items though! LOL

Have you ever said you’ve read a book when you haven’t ?

Heh. I mean… We’ve all done this, right?! Most of the time it was for class, but there were times when I was having a discussion with someone who mentioned some classic and… Well, I have to admit that I said I’ve read it when I haven’t 😂 But then I did go out and read that book before someone tested my knowledge of it haha

Have you ever borrowed a book and not returned it?

Maybe… It was totally be accident though. I didn’t intentionally keep the book… It was just that I didn’t bring it on the day we were supposed to return it, and then next thing I knew the year was over, and another year was over… and then I’d forget I still haven’t returned it and … it was just too late 😅

Have you ever read a series out of order?

My first instinct is to say no because why would you do something like that? But then I think about it and realize that sometimes I do read series out of order when the story and characters don’t overlap. So it doesn’t really matter lol but never when it’s a “proper” series!

Have you ever spoiled a book for someone?

NO! Never! I’m pretty sure that I haven’t. I would never do that because I hate when people do that to me. Some people may think it’s funny but no. No, it’s not 😒

Have you ever dogeared a book?

I can’t lie, I haaaaaave. It doesn’t happen often if at all, but it’s usually when I’m really desperate and don’t have anything on hand and know that I won’t be able to remember the page number where I left off. But… It’s very rare! 😅

Have you ever told someone you don’t own a book when you do?

No, I don’t believe I have. If I’ve done this it’s probably because I can’t remember whether I do have it or not (or I’m thinking of another book that’s really similar).

Have you ever told someone you haven’t read a book when you have?

YES. This is usually when it comes to romances because I honestly get such judgmental looks and comments when I say I read and enjoy romance. So for a long time I’ve not mentioned or denied that I read these books… 😒

Have you ever skipped a chapter or a section of a book?

The only times I’ve done this is when I want to DNF a book. I don’t like to DNF but when I really can’t stand the book and want to get through it as quickly as possible, I skip sections and quickly skim chapters.

Have you ever badmouthed a book you actually liked?

My memory is so bad… I really can’t remember if I’ve ever done this but my instinct is to immediately claim no, I haven’t! I honestly can’t see why I would even do such a thing tbh.

I’M TAGGING YOU, LOVELY PERSON READING THIS POST!

The Netgalley Book Tag!

A few *months* ago Alys @ Alys in Bookland tagged me to do The Netgalley Book Tag! Of course in my typically late fashion, I am only now getting around to it. Thanks so much for the tag, Alys! You all should check out her lovely blog — her aesthetic is just ridiculously cute and amazing and her reviews and posts are awesome!

RULES:

  • Link back to the tag’s creator.
  • Thank and link back to the person who tagged you.
  • Answer the questions the best you can. If you don’t use NetGalley, you can substitute other sites or places where you get books!
  • Tag a few people to do this too.

Auto-Approved: Who’s one author whose books you automatically want to read, regardless of what they’re about?

I’d have to say Taylor Jenkins Reid for this one. I haven’t read all of her books yet but all of the ones I’ve read have been 4-5 stars and I can’t imagine myself disliking any of her books. I could end up being completely wrong, but I’m on a mission to build my collection of her books! Not that I’ve ever seen her books on NetGalley nor (I’m sure) would I ever be approved even if I wished for it 🤣

Request: What makes you want to request a book that you see on NetGalley?

The first thing that always catches my eye is the cover — I know, I know, don’t judge a book blah blah. Yeah, but it’s true, I do this. Then I read the synopsis and if I’m on the fence about it I check it out on Goodreads and sometimes I’ll skim reviews. Do other people do that? For the most part I decide based on the synopsis!

Feedback Ratio: Do you review every book you read? If not, how do you decide what books to review?

If it’s an ARC, of course! Ever since I started my blog I’ve also tried to write a review for all the books I read and for the most part I’ve done a pretty good job of it, minus a few here and there. I’m working on it!

Badges: If you could create your own badge to display on your blog, what would it be for?

I’m sure this is already out there somewhere but I haven’t seen it yet (although I honestly haven’t looked for it yet either) but I’d like to make a badge as an international book blogger for the obvious reason. Or…. SOMETHING WITH A PANDA ON IT because… pandas? 🐼🐼🐼

Wish for it: What’s one book that you are absolutely dying to read?

One of the upcoming releases that I’m absolutely dying to get my hands on is The Toll by Neal Shusterman. The release date is coming up right quick and I CAN’T WAIT to get my hands on this book. Like, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY please and thank you.

2019 NetGalley Challenge: What was the last book that you received as an ARC that you reviewed? If you’ve never received an ARC, what’s the last book you reviewed?

The last e-ARC that I received and reviewed was My Life as Marlee by Victoria Anders. Unfortunately for me, this one just didn’t work well for me. You can read my review here!

I’M TAGGING ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DO THIS!

(I’m sorry, I’m just too lazy… If you do this tag, please link back to me so I can see your post too!)

Summer Bucket List Book Tag!

The very lovely Jen @ Nen & Jen tagged me ages ago for the Summer Bucket List book tag (ages back)! I know for the majority of you summer is already over, some may even be highly anticipating the coming summer (in the southern hemisphere), and since I’m in the tropics, I live in perpetual summer. Trust me, it’s not as great as it sounds when it’s 1000% hot every damn day 🥵 But I digress… Thanks for the tag, Jen! Be sure to check out her answers over on their blog because she is awesome! I only hope my choices will be half as fun as hers! Without further ado… Let’s get back to summer 😊

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This book is set on an island and the beaches, cliffs and ocean play a big role in the character’s upbringing. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style (fragmented sentences), I was able to look past that and ended up really enjoying the story. It took me by surprise and I ended up bawling lol

Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas
Caleana is such a fierce and bad ass character and although she had two fiery romances in this series, the one I’m thinking about is definitely between her and Rowan. The build up and the explosion of feelings between them was 🔥!

Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse
This is one of those underrated SFF books in my opinion. The characters do go on somewhat of a journey to solve a mystery that’s plaguing this incredible Native American folklore inspired dystopian world. Maggie, while hard to like at first, really grew on me. She’s such a bad ass! And I loved Kai 💚

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Ugh, this story y’all! I still don’t have the words for how much I loved Evelyn Hugo’s story. I was swept away by the story of this ruthless and brilliant woman in Hollywood from the 50s – 80s; and of course, the story of her seven husbands and how she fought her way to the top. I fell in love with her!

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett
You’ve heard me say it once and I’ll say it again: this book was nothing like I expected in the best way possible. I picked this up on a whim after finishing SJTR and I was so glad I started it on a weekend because the next thing I knew, it was Sunday and my face was blotchy after the unexpected tears I shed reading this incredible story. So damn good, peoples. So damn good!

The Simple Wild (Wild #1) by K A Tucker
Sign me up for a sky cowboy because I’m pretty sure I fell just as much in love with Jonah’s character as Calla did herself. This covered some of my favorite tropes in romance: enemies to sort-of friends to lovers and it did not disappoint! And all of it was set against the Alaskan wild, a place that I’ve developed a very weird fascination with over the years. Theirs was a sweet romance between city girl and ‘country’ boy and I was here for it!

Nevernight (Nevernight Chronicle #1) by Jay Kristoff
What’s more refreshing than a story set against a Hogwarts for assassins? 😂 Okay no, but honestly, I know this is probably a weird pick for this category, but this book is usually filled with things that I don’t enjoy (an incredible amount of blood, guts and gore) but wow, did it blow me away! It’s safe to say that this series has become one of my new favorites and I was completely wowed by it.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
It’s not just one character in priory that overcomes obstacles, it’s basically all of them. I don’t think I’ve read a book where shit so consistently hits the fan for such a long duration 😂I mean, if you think of something that could possibly go wrong, chances are it will for these characters. I really felt for them but in the end, they grew in very satisfying ways to conquer (all) the obstacles in their way.

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks
This book made me SO HUNGRY. Although their main mission was to get Josie talking to his long-time crush, Deja’s personal mission was to eat her way through the Disney of pumpkin patches and it’s safe to say I was constantly drooling while they ate all the delicious festive fall foods. DELICIOUS!

Sorry I’m Late I Didn’t Want to Come… by Jessica Pan
Jessica Pan is a (sh)introvert (a shy introvert) who is in the throes of something that looks like a quarter-life crisis, when she decides to take the leap into saying “YES” to all the things she’d normally be terrified to do. I identified so much with Pan and seeing her face these challenges before her despite being utterly terrified was so inspiring! I read this book at a time when I faced a big career challenge and I had just finished a chapter where she basically head the same experience as me but on a much larger scale, and I charged ahead with her in mind. This was a hilarious and inspiring book that is definitely going on my forever shelf!

And there you have it, folks! I’m feeling completely lazy right now (it’s been a long night with sangria!) so I’m going to TAG EVERYONE! If this sounds like something you want to do, don’t forget to link back to me so I can check out your answers!
