Always mindful of the debt she owes, the girl finds her worth as a weapon in the hand of the Prince. Her victories make him a king, then an emperor. The bards sing her name and her enemies fear it. But the war never ends and the cost keeps risingโ€”how many times will she repeat her own story?

War and everything that comes with it (blood, brutality), death of a child (briefly recounted)

*This review was first posted to Goodreads in January 2023*

TL;DR: Stories such as this make me realise that I can love short stories and novellas just as much as full-length novels because what a masterpiece! I can see why some people won’t find it enjoyableโ€”whether it’s the POV or writing or “slow” paceโ€”but I found myself awed by the fact that all of this is packed into a story that’s 30 pages long. Long story short, read it or at least give it a try; I highly recommend it! Also, it can definitely be read as a standalone so you can dive right in.

#FirstLinesFriday: 24 February 2023

Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

ARC Review: Seven Percent of Ro Devereux by Ellen O’Clover

Special thanks to HarperTeen for providing a digital ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

Seven Percent of Ro Devereux
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: 17 January 2023
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance

Panda Rating:

(5 pandas)

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

A clever, charming, and poignant debut novel about a girl who must decide whether to pursue her dreams or preserve her relationships, including a budding romance with her ex-best friend, when an app she created goes viral.

Ro Devereux can predict your future. Or, at least, the app she built for her senior project can.

Working with her neighbor, a retired behavioral scientist, Ro created an app called MASH, designed around the classic game Mansion Apartment Shack House, that can predict a personโ€™s future with 93% accuracy. The app will even match users with their soul mates. Though it was only supposed to be a class project, MASH quickly takes off and gains the attention of tech investors.

Roโ€™s dream is to work in Silicon Valley, and sheโ€™ll do anything to prove to her new backing companyโ€”and the worldโ€”that the app works. So itโ€™s a huge shock when the app says her soul mate is Miller, her childhood best friend with whom she had a friendship-destroying fight three years ago. Now thrust into a fake dating scenario, Ro and Miller must address the years of pain between them if either of them will have any chance of achieving their dreams.

Fans of Emma Lord and Alex Light will love this stand-alone contemporary novel with a masterful slow-burn romance at its core.

โš ๏ธ CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS

Death of a loved one, injury caused by angry mob, parental abandonment

**note: this review was originally written when i finished the book in January 2023!**

TL;DR: I didn’t expect to find another second 5-star read in January or for it to be another YA contemporary but lo and behold! There is SO MUCH to love about this bookโ€”from the friendships and family relationships to the romance, the honest exploration of self and the character growth, the writing, the tension, and the angst, it was all SO good and the fact that it’s a debut actually stuns me. I don’t know if it’s too soon to say but I think I may have found a new favourite YA contemporary! If you enjoy coming-of-age YA contemporaries or have a young reader in your life to give a rec to, I would highly recommend this for its realistic characters, wonderful friendships/relationships, and a swoontastic romance.

Note: I was meant to read this for the blog tour last week until I went on hiatus because I wasn’t reading anything. I’m glad that I finished this book because it was a fantastic debut!

TL;DR: This was a strong YA/NA fantasy thriller debut that I really enjoyed! Unfortunately, I read this during a tumultuous personal time so it took me an uncharacteristically long time to read it; however, I’m 100% certain that if I had read this at any other time, I would’ve flown through it one sitting because it had that unputdownable quality that made me want to keep reading to learn the truth! Though not all the twists were entirely surprising, they did keep me on my toes and eager to see if my theories proved correct. While this story balances being plot and character driven very well, it was the characters who, IMO, made this a great read! I already can’t wait for the next book because I need to know what happensโ€”dark things are definitely coming their way and I’m so keen to see just what it turns out to be.

A thrilling fantasy adventure from acclaimed author Nina Varela that explores friendship and queer identity, perfect for fans of Amari and the Night Brothers and Rick Riordanโ€™s Trials of Apollo series!

When Juniper Harveyโ€™s family moves to the middle of nowhere in Florida, her entire life is uprooted. As if thatโ€™s not bad enough, she keeps having dreams about an ancient-looking temple, a terrifying attack, and a mysterious girl who turns into an ivory statue. One night after a disastrous school dance, Juniper draws a portrait of the girl from her dreams and thinks, I wish you were here. The next morning, she wakes up to find the girl in her roomโ€ฆpointing a sword at her throat!

The unexpected visitor reveals herself as Galatea, a princess from a magical other world. One problemโ€”her crown is missing, and she needs it in order to return home. Now, itโ€™s up to Juniper to help find the crown, all while navigating a helpless crush on her new companion. And things go from bad to worse when a sinister force starts chasing after the crown too.

Packed with adventure and driven by a pitch-perfect voice, this middle grade debut from Nina Varela is about one tween forging new friendships, fighting nightmarish monsters, and importantly, figuring out who she is and who she ultimately wishes to be.

TL;DR: Juniper Harvey was such a treat to read and while I think it’s perfect for all ages, I think it’s especially perfect for middle-grade readers who love magic, adventure, myth, and good friends. The story starts off a little slowly as we get to learn about June but it doesn’t take long for the action to start and it continues all the way to the end! I really enjoyed the unravelling of the mystery and the truth behind the dreams, the magic, and of course, the friendships that were made along the way. I would also recommend this to anyone who’s interested in stories about powerful and vengeful gods!

Spontaneous Hiatus

Sorry to anyone reading this absolute moan of a post, I just need to let my feelings out!

This post isnโ€™t really book related but itโ€™s me announcing a spontaneous hiatus for at least this week and depending on how next week goes, maybe another week, too. Work is really affecting me and I have no capacity to think of anything else right now. Iโ€™m so fucking exhausted and feeling incredibly hopeless and I hate it. I know itโ€™s just this phase of work Iโ€™m in right now, but I feel so unsupported by the people I need the most support from even after continuously voicing my concerns.

A meme of a shocked possum at the bottom of the image, with the following text above it:
Me: no problemo
Narrator: But it was all problemo
Thatโ€™s me. I am this possum.

Not to sound dramatic but today was a day that had me trying to hold back tears as I discussed with colleagues this annual report that I barely understand what Iโ€™m doing with anymoreโ€”completely smashing what little I understood of it to begin with.

I barely held back the tears on the long and seemingly endless journey home this evening while simultaneously trying to avoid having a full-blown panic-fueled anxiety attack.

And it finally ended with me being unable to hold back my tears when I got home and made it into the shower, all throughout dinner, and as I continued to figure out what the hell I need to do to get this thing done by the deadline next week.

I am so so so incredibly exhausted. I just want to keep crying. And I hate that itโ€™s making every moment miserable and affecting my reading because my brain just canโ€™t compute.

Book Reviews: Halifax Hellions Series by Alexandra Vasti

Halifax Hellions #1

In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation
Pub Date: 19 September 2022
Genre: Historical Romance

Panda Rating:

(4.5 pandas)

๐Ÿ“– SYNOPSIS

The Halifax Hellions are the most scandalous, outrageous, ungovernable ladies in London. From the day of their debutโ€”in which Matilda smoked a cheroot and Margo tied a cherry stem in a knot with her tongueโ€”theyโ€™ve turned the ton upside down. But when Matilda elopes with a dangerous aristocrat, Margo must stop her twin before this new misadventure becomes a permanent marriage. For help, Margo turns to her brotherโ€™s best friendโ€”because if anyone can get them to Scotland in time, itโ€™s starchy solicitor Henry Mortimer.

Henry Mortimer has precisely one secret in his otherwise buttoned-up life: heโ€™s been in love with Margo for seven wonderful, agonizing years. When she turns up at his doorstep, soaked to the skin and desperate for his help, he cannot turn her down. A week alone in a carriage with the object of his desires an armโ€™s length away? Surely he can survive that. He hopes.

But the road to Scotland is paved with disastersโ€”caves and crashes and the bloody rain that keeps forcing Henry to hold a damp, shivering, sinfully tempting Margo in his arms. Only an unstoppable force could drag the truth of Henryโ€™s affection from his lips. Unfortunately for him, Margo Halifax has yet to be stopped.
