Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.
Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.
Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again.
Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—
I am the villain.

So there I was selling bikinis out of my truck in South Beach Miami, getting ready to kick off a wet t-shirt contest when the world’s biggest grouch approached me – Keller Fitzwilliam.

The man had the sultriest British accent I’ve ever heard. And he looked like he just walked off a Viking boat and into a suit tailored specifically for his impressively muscular frame. Only problem is, he had the warmth of an ice pick and he kept telling me he was here to take me back to his home country.

Of course, I didn’t follow him. I might be up for a good time, but I’m also educated enough to know leaving with a stranger isn’t smart. Well, that’s until he mentioned my mom’s name. My mom who passed away several years ago.

So after some serious fact-checking, my bikini-clad bum went with him to a sub-arctic country I had never heard of just north of the British Isles, where I found out my grandpa was the king of said freezing country, and I was the one and only heir.
Desperate to learn more about my mom, I decided to give this princess thing a chance.

Good idea, right? Wrong.
Because Mr. Ice Pick was put to the task of training me and he’s not just cold as ice, he’s pompous, aggravating, and possessive. And did I mention we have to share a bathroom in a tiny castle?

We are oil and water every single day and even though he’s training me to be queen, I have this simmering desire to kneel before him.

#WWWWednesday: 10 August 2022

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last week I’ve managed to finish three books. I actually DNF’d one book this week and I also wished that I had DNF’d another one of the books that I read but other than that, it was a great reading week!

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh ★★★★★
This is one of my favourite fantasies this year. It had absolutely gorgeous writing, fantastical folklore, vivid world-building with strong Spirited Away vibes, a swoontastic romance, and wonderful characters. I highly recommend it! 💜

(ARC) Not Betting on Forever (Single Ladies of Lakeside #1) by Natasha Moore ★★☆☆☆
Sadly, this wasn’t my jam. I felt zero chemistry between our MCs nor did I care about any of the other characters. For characters who were supposedly more mature (40+), these two acted like horny teenagers and the forbidden trope that I thought I’d be okay with simply didn’t work for me. Check out my review!

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last week I’ve managed to finish four books. I was really on a romance kick and after finishing my last book, which was a regional romance, I kind of want to dive into all the histroms now!

(KU) Fake Empire by C.W. Farnsworth ★★★★☆
I was pleasantly surprised by this! Scarlett and Crew are both alpha bosses who are tired of the fakeness of the ultra-rich world they live in. I thought it would be hard to sympathise with them but I loved both of them and found myself really invested in their journeys. It was a little angsty, delightfully steamy, and definitely swoony! 😍

(KU) Sin Bin (Carolina Comets #4) by Teagan Hunter ★★★★☆
I always have a fun time with Hunter’s books and it was no different with Smith and Emilia’s story. It was a forbidden and age-gap romance which made it a little bit more angsty but it also turned the heat up really high! 🔥 These two had such great chemistry and I loved how the conflict with their relationship was handled. Where can I find a Smith? Also, I loved the inclusion of text messages in the story cos I feel it’s something Hunter does really well 😍

Monthly Wrap Up: July 2022

As I knew it would, July passed by in a blink! The two biggest and most exciting things that happened were reuniting with a bestie after 13 years apart and getting my first bookish tattoo. Ngl, I’m still extremely obsessed with my tattoo and I can’t stop looking at it because I love it so much! Other than that, the weeks have passed by in a blur or going to work, trying to go to the gym as often as possible and being as productive as we can.

I’ve spent a good chunk of my Sunday reading Seven Days in June by Tia Williams. Leslie and I have been planning to read this together for ages and we finally decided to dive in yesterday! Ngl, I’m a little obsessed. It’s so raw and emotional and it has my feelings all tangled in a knot and sitting heavy in my chest and OOF, I love it! 🥹

A darkly enchanting fantasy debut about a morally gray witch, a cursed prince, and a prophecy that ignites their fate-twisted destinies—perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince and Serpent & Dove.

Violet is a prophet and a liar, influencing the royal court with her cleverly phrased—and not always true—divinations. Honesty is for suckers, like the oh-so-not charming Prince Cyrus, who plans to strip Violet of her official role once he’s crowned at the end of the summer—unless Violet does something about it.

But when the king asks her to falsely prophesy Cyrus’s love story for an upcoming ball, Violet awakens a dreaded curse, one that will end in either damnation or salvation for the kingdom—all depending on the prince’s choice of future bride. Violet faces her own choice: Seize an opportunity to gain control of her own destiny, no matter the cost, or give in to the ill-fated attraction that’s growing between her and Cyrus.

Violet’s wits may protect her in the cutthroat court, but they can’t change her fate. And as the boundary between hatred and love grows ever thinner with the prince, Violet must untangle a wicked web of deceit in order to save herself and the kingdom—or doom them all.

Book Review: Beauty and the Baller by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Goodreads: Beauty and the Baller (Strangers in Love #1)
Published: 29 March 2022
Genre: Contemporary Sports Romance

Panda Rating:

(4.5 pandas)

Gorgeous, talented, and brilliant, NFL quarterback Ronan Smith has the world in his hands. But after losing his career and his fiancée in a car accident, he falls into a pit of grief and bad choices. When a mysterious girl shows up to his party, he feels drawn to her and makes her his…for one night.

Former beauty queen Nova Morgan is on a mission. Scantily clad as a princess from a galaxy far, far away, she sneaks into a high-profile party to capture the attention of her favorite quarterback. But her hopes crash after an awful one-night stand.

Fast-forward two years. Broke and desperate, Nova returns home to Blue Belle, Texas, where, by a cosmic twist of fate, her broody neighbor is none other than Ronan, the shiny new football coach everyone adores. But he has no idea who she is.

The booster club keeps shoving women at Ronan to keep him in town. His solution? He proposes fake dating to Nova. But things heat up for real under these Friday-night lights when he realizes she’s the one who slipped away.

Has this jaded beauty found her forever baller, or will his past keep them apart?

TL;DR: This was swoony, sweet, banter-filled and exactly the read that I was looking for right now. I really enjoyed this fake-dating semi-second-chances romance set in a football-obsessed small-town in Texas. All the characters were wonderful and the different relationships that developed throughout the story were so great! I don’t reread often but I can definitely see this being a comfort read—it was just so heartwarmingly good. 💜
