Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a brilliant idea, conceived and executed by a clever young woman, must be claimed by a man.”

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries series is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.
When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.
I just finished reading Pride and Premeditation today and I ended up really enjoyed it. I liked that the author was able to cleverly include the iconic lines from the Austen’s work into this story. I will say that this is a very loose retelling though. I mean, Pride & Prejudice with murder is already drastically different (LOL) so it’s not surprising and I didn’t mind it but I thought it’d be a good heads up for those who would mind! This book is out next week 😍

Have you read Pride & Premeditation or is it also on your TBR?

Ahhhh I really want to read this one Dini! I’m a big Pride & Prejudice fan and have read a few modern retellings over the years but this one really grabbed my attention. Plus that cover is just beautiful 😍
