So, we’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is: Books I Would Hand to Someone Who Claims to Not Like Reading.

I’m going rogue this week because I am the worst at recommending books to people. I’m always terrified to recommend something I love because what if they hate it and never want to listen to a recommendation from me again?! Fair do. So I decided to share the last 10 eBooks I bought that were all 99p! I mean, that’s a steal to me and some of these I’ve been wanting to read for a very long time so I’m happy I snagged them! 😉 I bought them on Amazon UK and they might still be going for 99p so if they’re also on your TBR, and you feel like having a cheeky slightly-less-guilty book shopping spree, I’d definitely recommend checking it out!

I’ve managed to finish 3 books since last week. NGL, my reading has pretty much been non-existent since I started a new game… 🙈

To Hate Adam Connor (Love & Hate #2) by Ella Maise ★★★½
I have mixed feelings about this book because even though I enjoyed it more than the first, I still had issues with the writing. It started off well but then towards the middle to the end the writing (especially the dialogue) became stilted and it kept taking me out of the story. That said, I absolutely adore Lucy and still loved her ride-or-die friendship with Olive, and Adam Connor… Well, he’s definitely quality DILF material! 😂 Their romance was steamy AF. RTC

The Secret Garden on 81st Street: A Modern Retelling of the Secret Graden by Ivy Noelle Weir ★★★★☆
This story picks up right from where Kept from Cages leaves off and it was an absolutely thrilling and action-packed conclusion to the Ikiri duology. We reunite with the fantastic crew and experience more terrifying supernatural events, monsters and even zombies as we travel across continents in a race against time to stop Ikiri’s dark powers from spreading further. Puck Shy (Carolina Comets #1) by Teagan Hunter ★★★½
Puck Shy is an entertaining rom-com and a promising start to a new sports romance series by this author! Teagan Hunter never fails to make me laugh and I found myself loving these quirky and awkward characters, and I loved their cheesy but ultimately sweet romance. Harper and Collin were so good together and I can’t wait to read more from this series! Check out my ARC review!

I’m quite the chicken when it comes to horror and other spooky ghosty supernatural things, so it’s really no surprise that I’m not all that fussed with the spooky season. I tend to stay away from the majority of spooky/horror books but there are a few I keep seeing since last year that piqued my curiosity. Pretty much all of these are very hyped and they’re a good mix of MG, YA and Adult. I’m curious enough that I’ve even added quite a few of these to my TBR so only time will tell if I ever decide to pick any of these up! 😂

I’m still in a funky reading mood so I’m kind of surprised that I managed to finish seven books, though a few of them were novellas or quick romances:

Man in Charge Duet by Laurelin Paige ★★½
I thought this duet started out promising. While not really standing out, it wasn’t terribly written and there was some intense sexual tension between the H/h, although there wasn’t much depth to their character. But by the time we hit drama-land and got to book two, I only gave it 2-stars for the smut cos the rest was just a hot hot mess! 🙈

Given to Darkness (Ikiri Book 2) by Phil Williams ★★★★☆
This story picks up right from where Kept from Cages leaves off and it was an absolutely thrilling and action-packed conclusion to the Ikiri duology. We reunite with the fantastic crew and experience more terrifying supernatural events, monsters and even zombies as we travel across continents in a race against time to stop Ikiri’s dark powers from spreading further. Ooh, this one is probably gonna be a “short and sweet” one for me but I’m so looking forward to seeing what all of you use and recommend! I’m pretty sure this is a topic that hasn’t been done before (or at least, not that I can remember in the years I’ve been doing TTT) so this is gonna be fun!

Welcome back to another Top 5 Saturday! Just in case you don’t know Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books and it’s where we list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favourite books, books you loved/hated) based on the week’s topic. You can see the upcoming schedule at the end of my post 🙂 This week’s topic is actually: books set in the forest.

I focus most of my Top 5 Saturdays on books that are still on my TBR but this week I thought I’d take a look at five favourite books that are set in the forest. There’s a good mix of fantasy, romance, horror, and mystery in this lot and they were all wonderfully atmospheric reads—the forest often felt alive in these settings! Without further ado… Here are my recs for you!

The Bear and the Nightingale

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

I’ve been in a bit of a funky reading mood since last week and found it difficult to really focus on a book for long. I went back and forth a lot until I managed to finish reading these four books:

Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous by Suzanne Park ★★★★☆
This was a super fast read and a very entertaining and relatable YA contemporary/coming-of-age story. Sunny is a teenager obsessed with social media due to being a mid-level influencer. I think many readers will be able to relate to her rocky relationship with social media! My first book by Park but certainly not my last. 📱 RTC

Hooked (Never After #1) by Emily McIntire ★★★☆☆
If you’re into dark romances with villainous heroes and innocent heroines with darker desires, this might be up your alley! It does get bloody and slightly gory but there are some great twists and turns to the story (although not entirely unpredictable). It’s not a Peter Pan retelling but I loved how elements of the original story were incorporated into this. Also, pretty steamy! 🔥 RTC

So… This topic was decidedly difficult? 🤔 It could be that my brain just wasn’t in a thinking mood and the brain fog was admittedly working extra hard today (lol, of course I’m making the post on the day of!), so I couldn’t decide on whether I wanted to focus it on a few specific places from my favourite books or whether I wanted to focus on the setting and highlight books based on those. In the end, I decided to go with the former because I thought it would be easier? It wasn’t. There are just too many settings I love so this is simply a tiny taste of my favourites. Sorry in advance cos this post is just a hot mess 😂

It’s been a hot minute since I did a Top 5 Saturday post but of course I had to come back on the day when the topic is a toughie (for me!) LOL. 😂 It took a little bit of digging on Goodreads but I managed to find 5 books that are on my TBR that have bones on the cover and that I can’t wait to read! ☠️

Since last week I’ve read seven books. This past week I discovered one of my favourite reads of the year and I can’t recommend it enough—especially if you’re a fan of Norse mythology and unapologetically queer characters! 😍

The Sweetest Oblivion (Made #1) by Danielle Lori ★★★★☆
I didn’t expect to enjoy this mafia romance as much as I did but the characters, the slow burn romance and absolutely explosive sexual tension made this a delightfully heart-pounding read. My review

As Good As Dead (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder #3) by Holly Jackson ★★★½
This is the third and final book in the AGGGTM series and although Pippa’s story took a wild turn that was outrageous and had me really suspending my disbelief, I appreciated how Jackson tied in all the stories and had everything come full circle. My review

The Goddess of Nothing at All by Cat Rector ★★★★★
This is an amazing Norse Mythology retelling told from the perspective of the lesser known deity Sigyn Odindottir, aka Loki’s wife (and so much more in her own right). This dark fantasy is as much a love story as it is a tragedy that ripped my feelings to shreds, and if you love mythology, queer retellings, and morally grey characters, then defo give this a try!
