I’ve spent my Sunday reading Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. Yes, it happened, friends! I finally picked this book up and I’m buddy-reading it with Leslie and happy to say we’re loving it! Zetian is certainly something and there were moments when I was like “eh?” but I’m truly enjoying so much about this. Li Shimin deserves all the hugs 🥹

📖 SYNOPSIS

The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn’t matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it’s to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister’s death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia​. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

Sorry to whine at the start of the year but is it really already Sunday and do I really have to go into the office tomorrow morning? Sadly, I flew back to Jakarta on Friday and I don’t know where this weekend has gone cos apparently it’s already over. It feels good to be back in my space and with my books, but I really don’t feel ready to leave #VacationMode even though I’ve technically never stopped working over the holidays—it was just really nice and quiet at the office! 🫣

I also self-dyed my hair back to black today and I forgot how hard it can be. As a result, I now have black stains splotched along the edges of my face, particularly where my sideburns are and my sideburns now look Elvis Presley thick because of it. It’s horrifying, haha! Going to the office should be fun tomorrow… 😂🙃

On books: Since I got back from Bali, I immediately started cataloguing my physical books and wow, it’s definitely taking longer than anticipated so I can’t even imagine how long cataloguing my digital books will take. I’m telling myself to have strength, lol.

On blogging: I feel like I’ve been writing a lot of heavier posts this past week or so and it’s probably because it’s all about the final 2022 wrap-ups, new goals, etc. It’s made me feel productive but also kinda tired, lol. I’m excited for a new year of blogging though!

  1. Glad you made it back safely, and I feel you on the post holiday return to work. It’s my first full work week since October. How will we survive? I always dye my own hair, but with my injured foot, I had my stylist do it last time. It was so , but cost 10 times what I pay for dye. I am sure it doesn’t look as bad as you think it does though.

    • I hope you have a good first week back at work, Sam! We totally got this 🔥 Back when I used to want to dye my hair, I used to do it myself but its been *years* since I’ve done it and I forgot how to be neat. Thankfully, olive oil came to rescue and helped lighten the stains so they’re not as obvious, especially the sideburns! 😂 One more application tonight and it should be gone by tomorrow—thankfully, haha!

    • Yeah, it does come out this year! I’ve seen the cover of the second book and it’s gorgeous but it’s already making me think about how this book connects to that 👀 I’m very curious about that gold thread that’s on her hand and what it means!   5. I’ve had months off work, I’m really not looking forward to losing my freedom again this year, but I guess I have to eat, and buy books. I got Iron Widow in a subscription box, and I haven’t really heard much about it.

    • Yeah, it’s hard to go back to work when you’ve enjoyed the freedom of doing what you want every day! I hope the transition back isn’t too painful for you though. I feel like Iron Widow is a very hyped book and it has received a lot of love. I enjoyed it but I didn’t love it so that was a bit disappointing. I seem to be in the minority with these feelings about it though cos the majority of my bookish friends have rated it 5 stars! I hope you enjoy it if you do pick it up 🙂
