#WWWWednesday: 02 November 2022

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last week, I managed to finish four books and one of them is a new favourite of 2022!

(KU) A Ruin of Roses (Deliciously Dark Fairytales #1) by K.F. Breene ★★★☆☆
I went in with low expectations and honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. It’s a fun take on Beauty & the Beast although there were a few things that prevented me from enjoying the story more; namely, the OTT crass language and the “not like other girls” heroine and her conversations with an imaginary audience that was probably meant to be funny but wasn’t? Oops!

(KU) A Throne of Ruin (Deliciously Dark Fairytales #2) by K.F. Breene ★★★☆☆
Eh, I mean, nothing that happened in this book was unexpected. It could’ve been so much shorter because not a lot happens. But if you’re looking for steamy, you’ll get it here and thankfully, the crass language was toned down a lot! I probably won’t read on though.

Babel by R.F. Kuang ★★★★★
My mind is still blown by Kuang’s genius in this novel—I’m seriously in awe of the way she weaves words and makes it all hit so hard. It’s not subtle but it’s powerful AF! I mean, I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about this book because I wanted a bit more from that ending and a little less from the middle bits but what I do know is that the discussions on racism and colonialism and the beautiful expositions on language will stick with me for a while to come!

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen ★★★★★
I loved this book so much. The light fantasy world-building, the supreme hate-to-love romance with the snippy and witty banter, the partial epistolary format, the fantastic secondary characters. I GUSHED about all of it in MY REVIEW.

I’m currently reading THREE books, although technically I’m really only “reading” two.

  • A Ghost in Shining Armor by Therese Beharrie → 17%I’m so behind with ARCs and I’m ashamed to admit this is one of them. I haven’t read anything by Beharrie before but I’ve heard great things. I’m still early in it but it’s not bad so far!
  • Reader, I Murdered Him by Besty Cornwell → 34%Another ARC I’m behind on but I’m slowly catching up. I haven’t read Jane Eyre so I didn’t realise this would be connected. I’m enjoying what I’ve read so far but it’s feeling a little angsty and I’m not much in the mood for it, tbh.
  • Wolfsong by TJ Klune → 42% → BR with Leslie & Destiny → Still haven’t picked it back up again…

What’re you currently reading? Have you read any of these books or are they also on your TBR? Happy reading, friends! 😍

    • Yes, Andge! Add Hart and Mercy to that TBR because it’s SO GOOD! I absolutely adored these characters and not just the romance but all the other relationships that develop. Makes my heart so happy! 💜 I also hope you enjoy Babel—that’s definitely not some light reading but wow, did Kuang blow my mind!

  1. Two five-star books is phenomenal. They made up for the other two meh books. And here I was thinking I was the only one who hadn’t read Jane Eyre. Sometimes I think it’s better when I read these retellings and haven’t read the source. Those hardcore readers always seem to be disappointed, and I never am.

    • I can’t say I’m mad about having two five star reads cos I feel like this week hasn’t been great in terms of reading. That is definitely mostly down to my mood lately though cos I’m in a restless reading mood and feeling a little apathetic. Might need to take a break maybe! 😂 And YAY! Finally, someone else who hasn’t read Jane Eyre either! I don’t know why I haven’t picked it up yet, just something about it doesn’t call my name, lol.
