Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:
“Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living.“

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.
In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha-one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice
First of all, I love this cover! I had my first taste of Chupeco’s writing earlier this year with Wicked as You Wish, and though many say that it’s a world apart from The Bone Witch, it made me even more eager to check out their work ASAP! I’ve been eyeing this book for a while now and when I saw it on sale at my local a few months back, I knew I had to add it to my shelves! I can’t wait to read it 🙂

Have you read The Bone Witch or it on your TBR?

Well that certainly caught my attention! It sounds really interesting.

Totally knew this one! I love the Bone Witch series. t first I wasn’t feeling the book the first time I read it, DNF’ed it and then a year later decided to read it again (which I rarely do) and read the whole series in a week. I hope you enjoy it!
