First Lines Friday – 30 October

Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:

“She couldn’t remember the first book she had eaten.”

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

Following her father’s death, Jane North-Robinson and her mom move from sunny California to the dreary, dilapidated old house in Maine where her mother grew up. All they want is a fresh start, but behind North Manor’s doors lurks a history that leaves them feeling more alone…and more tormented.

As the cold New England autumn arrives, and Jane settles in to her new home, she finds solace in old books and memories of her dad. She steadily begins making new friends, but also faces bullying from the resident “bad seed,” struggling to tamp down her own worst nature in response. Jane’s mom also seems to be spiraling with the return of her childhood home, but she won’t reveal why. Then Jane discovers that the “storage room” her mom has kept locked isn’t for storage at all–it’s a little girl’s bedroom, left untouched for years and not quite as empty of inhabitants as it appears….

Is it grief? Mental illness? Or something more…horrid?

I’ve seen some mention of Horrid in the community but it’s either not very hyped or I’ve missed out on all the hype (because a lot of what I’ve seen lately has been Addie LaRue)! This book is so far out of my comfort zone that I’m not sure when I will be picking it up, although now would definitely be the perfect time for it. However, I did get a copy in my Owlcrate box and it’s gorgeous and terrifying at the same time. I didn’t realise it would be about ghosts but there ya have it! I guess I’m looking forward to giving it a try but I guess I’ll also be sleeping with the lights on for a while after 😂

Have you read Horrid or is it on your TBR?

    • Haha thank you! Even though I chose them, these gifs still get me every time 😂
Y’know, I’m not too sure how well I’ll handle Horrid but my curiosity is piqued and FOMO is real 😅 (kidding, maybe not so much FOMO… definitely more curiosity! haha)

    • HAHAHA nice one, Andie 😂😂😂 Definitely that! Also, yeah, the more I hear about this book the creepier it sounds and I don’t know how ready I am for it… Let’s see. It’s on my shelf already either way! 😂

  1. I think the only thing that let me down with this book was the ending. Other than that, it’s not that bad! It’s not too bad in the horror field, which trust me I was really hesitant to read it because I’m not a horror person whatsoever and that’s what I thought I was getting into but nope! I hope you end up reading it ❤
