It’s funny how an event on the other side of the world has been able to consume my day, as if I really have any stake at all in what’s happening over there. All my friends and many colleagues have been ridiculously preoccupied by the elections, and we’re all waiting with bated breath to see what happens next. It’s been tough watching and it’s still going, but I’m with you all in spirit and really thinking of you, friends! If you need to be distracted, please reach out!

It’s still been pretty slow going on the reading front and I think it’s because I’m so distracted by all the books that I want to read and can’t decide which comes first. Since last Wednesday I’ve finished four books and I’m happy to say that all of them were really enjoyable and it was a week of solid fours!

Love Offline by Olivia Spring ★★★★☆
I read this for a blog tour and it was a really fun story full of realistic characters and relatable experiences! The romance was heartwarming and the chemistry between our characters was undeniable. Definitely recommended for those who love a contemporary romance that’s sure to make you laugh and is full of quirky charm! Read my review

The Highland Laird (Lord of the Highlands #8) by Amy Jarecki ★★★★☆
I swooped in on this after reading Julie’s review and well, I’m definitely sold on Scottish historical romances 🤣 I mean, oof. This was such a wonderful romance! The H/H were both great characters and they stole my heart. Despite being total opposites they understand each other more than anyone else, and they truly bring out the best in each other. I adored their love. Review to come!

It’s been a slow time for reading lately and it’s not just playing my Switch that has me distracted. I’ve been in a reading mood but haven’t been able to really settle on anything lately, and since last week I’ve only managed to finish three books.

Beneath Black Sails (Beneath Black Sails #1) by Clare Sager ★★★★☆
This was an undeniably fun, fast-paced and action-packed story that was able to fully absorb my attention and that’s why I’ve rounded up and kept my review at four stars. There are things that irritated me about the characters and the world-building was lacking, but this was the most pirate filled (romance)fantasy that I’ve ever read and I was here for its pure entertainment. Since last week’s update I’ve only managed to read two books. The struggle has been super real what with work really draining my energy, and it feels like I finished reading something other than these two books but… I guess not. Perhaps I’ve just lost the plot and have started making things up? 😂

The Magic Ingredient by Lindy Miller ★★★½
The perfect autumnal romance about second chances, family and discovering what’s important. This was a super sweet and wholesome romance that’s set against the backdrop of a small community, and it has all the wonderful small-town quirkiness that I love in these types of novels! Also, this made me crave sweet desserts like never before! I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to get my hands on a whoopie pie so badly 😂 Read my review.

Sisters of the Moon by Alexandrea Weis ★★★½
This was a gripping supernatural fantasy with horror elements to it. Weis does a fantastic job establishing an eerie atmosphere and creating intrigue through the mystery of the order. While the characters and world building weren’t as developed as I’d hoped they’d be, I am intrigued to see what happens next, especially after that action packed and intense ending! Read my review.

Since last Wednesday I’ve managed to read 7 books. Still going with lots of romance but also quite a bit of historical fiction, too!

Taken to Sasor (Xiveri Mates #3) by Elizabeth Stephens ★★½
This story was set apart from the world we’re introduced to in the first two books in the series and I’m sad to say that it’s my least favourite one. While I loved the heroine and the awesome side characters, I didn’t really care for the hero. The high point of this series continues to be the diversity and amazing world building–the intro to alien cultures, social norms, mythology/folklore is all so well done! I’ll be writing mini-reviews for the whole series once it’s finished.

Since last Wednesday I’ve managed to read: 8 books. I also DNF’d two other books but I’m not including them here. Friends, I’m so proud for not putting myself through reading books I’m not enjoying or have no interest in. 2020 year has been a shady ass year, but at least I’ve learned to DNF 😉 Heh…

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia ★★★★☆
I first heard about this book through Sammie and I get why she raves about it. It was so refreshing to read about African Gods and Black-American folklore, but it also deals with grief in a way that’s relatable for both young and old. Tristan and the whole cast had such strong and unique voices but it was Gum Baby that 100% won me over! I absolutely loved her! It’s super action packed and entertaining, and I can’t wait to read more about Tristan and the Gods in the future! Review to come.

Wow, so you know how I’ve been reading like crazy for the past two weeks? I finally met my match and I think I’m in a bit of a smol slump or something like that! And I’m pretty sure it’s all thanks to the one book I managed to finish (although I did DNF a book before finishing this). But back to the book I read: it was EPIC and it’s one of my top reads this year and perhaps one of my favourite fantasies ever? You might’ve seen me gushing on Twitter but if you didn’t, the book I read was The Poppy War (★★★★★ – obvi). Believe the hype, friends, because it is so freaking real! I wasn’t ready for how amazing this book would be. I also wrote the longest ass review I have ever written and I will be posting it at some point, but just know, this book was fantabulous. Although I do warn that there’s about a million CW/TW to consider before picking it up. Kuang does not shy away from the horrors and violence of war and at times it was sickeningly a lot.

I’ve somehow managed to read seven books since last week and I honestly have no idea how. Just kidding, I do. I literally spent all my time outside of work reading (and admittedly, I also spent a little time I should’ve spent working also reading–I’m so undisciplined 🙃)! It’s been a mood.

The Year Shakespeare Ruined My Life by Dani Jansen ★★½
I’m sad to say I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I’d hoped to. It had its cute moments but ultimately, the MC irritated me too much and the side characters and overall storyline weren’t fleshed out well enough. Review to come!

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara ★★★★☆
McNamara takes you on an incredible ride in this book. It’s obviously dark, gritty and compelling but at times I also felt overwhelmed with all the information she presents–it’s really a lot. It’s sad she didn’t live to see him caught, but her work definitely kept the GSK’s name in the spotlight. Review to come!

I’ve managed to finish six books since last Wednesday. I guess you can say that I’ve been reading a lot lately and from looking at the books I’ve read, I guess you can also say my moods have been swinging pretty wildly. From romance to fantasy to middle grade fiction… I’m a little all over the place! 😅

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune ★★★★★
You might’ve seen me gushing about this book on Twitter and Instagram because this is hands down one of my favourite reads in 2020! This book was just… magical. It was a gem and it was the most perfectly soothing balm for my weary 2020 heart. I don’t know what else to say except that I highly recommend it! But you can also read my review! 😉

The Beast and The Bethany by Jack Meggitt-Phillips ★★★½
This was a really entertaining MG read that really reminded me of the joy I felt reading Roald Dahl’s books as a child! I loved how the relationship between Bethany and Mr. Tweezer transformed them, and it was all thanks to the evil doings of the Beast. Bethany and Tweezer were very similar in so many ways but through their scheming, they somehow managed to bring out the best in each other, and had a good lesson on kindness and family. Since last week, I’ve managed to finish 6 books! Three of these were novella length books in a series so they were pretty fast reads. I also finally managed to tick off a highly anticipated romcom from my TBR and it was every bit as wonderful as everyone said it would be!

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie ★★★★½
This was such a powerful and fantastic debut from Medie. I didn’t have any expectations going into it but Medie reeled me in with her witty prose and wowed me with how she brought Ghana to life. I felt so much emotion while reading this book and I became so invested in Afi’s story. This is one you shouldn’t let slip past your radar! Read my review

Fable (Fable #1) by Adrienne Young ★★★★★
Fable has been one of my most anticipated 2020 releases and it did not disappoint! Young paints a gritty cut-throat pirate ruled world and she doesn’t pull any punches. Fable is such a tough MC with a resilient spirit who I became so invested in. Unsurprisingly, I loved the found-family vibes with the crew + the romance was a satisfying slow burn. I’d definitely recommend it! Read my review

Empire of Lies Series by Whitney G. ★★★☆☆
It’s been a while since I’ve read anything by Whitney G. and while this had her touch of steaminess, it was also a big departure from her usual–which she does state at the start of each book. It was a much darker read but I did enjoy the ‘big twist’ in book one as it did surprise me! Following that though, everything became predictable. While we learn a lot more about our MCs separately, we don’t get to see how their relationship grows so quickly, so I felt their romance was more “insta” and sadly underdeveloped. Overall though, I appreciated the concept and it was the palate cleanser I needed before my next read!

Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert ★★★★☆
Your eyes are not deceiving you, friends. I have finally read this book and it was just as wonderful as everyone said it was! I loved getting to know Chloe and Red. Their awkward and hilarious internal dialogues, their cheeky banter and the sexual tension between these two were absolute fire! They both had painful pasts that made them wary of any happiness they might find in the present but I loved seeing them grow and heal together. As has been mentioned by many reviewers, the chronic illness rep in this book is pretty great and I really appreciated reading a romance about such realistic characters. Review coming soon!
