#WWWWednesday: 23 September

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Wow, so you know how I’ve been reading like crazy for the past two weeks? I finally met my match and I think I’m in a bit of a smol slump or something like that! And I’m pretty sure it’s all thanks to the one book I managed to finish (although I did DNF a book before finishing this). But back to the book I read: it was EPIC and it’s one of my top reads this year and perhaps one of my favourite fantasies ever? You might’ve seen me gushing on Twitter but if you didn’t, the book I read was The Poppy War (★★★★★ – obvi). Believe the hype, friends, because it is so freaking real! I wasn’t ready for how amazing this book would be. I also wrote the longest ass review I have ever written and I will be posting it at some point, but just know, this book was fantabulous. Although I do warn that there’s about a million CW/TW to consider before picking it up. Kuang does not shy away from the horrors and violence of war and at times it was sickeningly a lot.

I had a ton of books on my ‘currently reading’ list last week, but I put them all aside to focus on Tristan Strong Punches A Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia. It’s an awesome middle grade fiction full of African Gods and African-American folklore and it’s *chefs kiss*. Gimme more of these Gods and these folktales, please! What I find funny is that I’ve never heard of these Gods and folktales before (save for Anansi) but their names were somehow familiar to me. Sammie has been raving about it for ages and now that I’ve finally picked it up I absolutely get her love for this book!

Blog tour reads. Blog tour reads. Blog tour reads.
I have quite a few coming up, especially in October and I can’t believe it’s already almost the last week of September?! 2020 is speeding by 🙈

How is your reading week going and what are you currently reading? Hope the rest of your week goes well!

    • It was at the top of mine for ages too but I’m so glad that I finally caved and read it. It was wooh– a lot more than I expected but I know why everyone’s recommending it and reading it now! 😍 Hope you enjoy it whenever you pick it up!

    • I totally get those feels! I think that’s partly why I only picked it up this year but seeing it everywhere on book twt pushed me to pick it up and wowzer. No regrets! It’s dark af though but so so so worth it! It will definitely probably crush your heart 😅 I hope you enjoy it whenever you get to it though 😉 Happy reading!

    • I’ve been tempted to try audio tours but I know I’m just way too picky with my audiobooks for that. If the narrator isn’t right then the book just won’t grip me, so I think I’ll just be sticking with the regular eARC tours 😂 I wish I were better at listening to audiobooks but it’s definitely a WIP though! Happy reading and good luck with the tours–we got this!

    • There’s sooo much hype around the book and it defo makes it more intimidating but I’m glad that for me it was at least all worth the hype 😂 It was actually more than I expected (in the best way lol)–I hope you enjoy it whenever you get to it!

  1. I want to read The Poppy War so so badly! I have heard nothing but great things. I think I may wait for a break in school because I want to give it ALL the attention it deserves! Great post 🙂

    • Oooh yes, that’s definitely a good idea! Once it reeled me in I didn’t want to put it down for anything lol I’m glad I also picked it up just before the weekend started because I stayed up all night finishing it 😂 I hope you enjoy it!

    • Haha I know the feeling 😂 I basically shoved aside all the other reads I have to read this and I don’t regret it though! It was everywhere, especially on book twitter, and so I caved. It was so good!

    • I’ve been hearing a lot of people say they’ve been feeling slumpish so we’re definitely not alone in that! I think TPW sent me slumpish because nothing compared to it afterwards 😂 I decided to hold off on Dragon Republic until after I finish my blog tour reads this month coz if it also sends me slumpish I’m screwed for the tour reads 😂

      • Yeah, that happens sometimes–a book’s just too good and you can’t move on haha.
Oh, I totally get that. I’ve got a couple of ARCs left and I’m sweating bullets over those, need to get them read before I can move on to mood reading again.

  2. EVERYONE is reading The Poppy War now! I saw so many reading vlogs featuring it, and just popping up here and there in the blogosphere! Why didn’t I get the memo?! 😀
So happy you loved it, definitely going to try to squeeze it into my TBR soon.

    • FOR A REASON, ALEX!!! Omg, I wasn’t expecting to jump on TPW hype train but… I’m definitely there. It was so good! Sooooo dark though but wow, just such good storytelling! Haha I’ve had it on my TBR for ages but since seeing it all over my various TL’s I decided I needed to read it! Would definitely recommend it and I hope you enjoy it whenever you pick it up 😉
