This week’s topic is:
Pride Month Reading ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
Prompts: Happy Pride! ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ What are your favourite books with LGBTQIA+ representation? Are there authors or series you always recommend? What books are on your Pride Month TBR? What do you think makes representation feel genuine?

What do you think makes representation feel genuine?
My thoughts on this apply beyond just LGBTQIA+ representation in books, but any sort of representation whether that be BIPOC or other minority groups. I think first and foremost, representation feels genuine to me when characters feel fully formedโthey don’t have to be perfect, but they should feel like they’re more than whatever identity they are “meant” to represent, if that makes sense. There should be more to a character than them being queer or BIPOC. Similarly, I think books feel more authentic when these characteristics are seen as part of the world (i.e. they’re normalized) because of course it’s normal to have LGBTQIA+ people in society. When they’re the only person or the only two people in a community, then it feels more tokenistic.
What are your favourite books with LGBTQIA+ representation?
I loved all of these books and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. They are some of the books that I always recommend when people ask for reccos!

What books are you planning to read this Pride month (or like, whenever, lol)? What makes representation feel genuine for you?

Some fab books on your tbr here! Last Night at the Telegraph Club is an all-time favourite of mine. Definitely agree with your thoughts on genuine rep, queer people are more than just queer!

P. Djรจli Clark is generally excellent; have you read any of his novellas? I found the ones set in the same world as A Master of Djinn added a lot to the experience of reading it, for me, and helped me get into it (since I read them first).

I started reading both The Red Winter and Where You’ll Find Us. I know both of those books have Pride representation.

I completely agree re: fully-formed characters. I must also admit to prefer reading stories where LGBTQIA+ is completely accepted as a normal part of society, unless I’m specifically in the mood for a literary fiction. If it’s fantasy etc. I’d really like to imagine that homophobia etc. didn’t exist for a bit.
