Sundays in Bed With… #MyWeeklyWrapUp [306]

We’re back with another Sundays in Bed With… meme! This meme dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent your time reading in bed or wish you had time to read today.

I’ll be spending the rest of my Sunday in bed reading The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah. I’ve been enjoying this so much and I’m now about 60% through. Could I even finish this tonight? Possibly! These characters are all very intriguing and their journey through the desert very engaging. I’m very keen to see where the story goes!

What book are you spending your Sunday in bed with?

This week has been exceptionally busy which has left me feeling more exhausted than usual. Lots of early morning starts needing to leave the house by 6am and I was not a fan of that! 😂 I realise my colleagues and I are pretty spoiled when it comes to working hours as a lot of us tend to rock up after 9am! Of course, we always work earlier and later than that through our phones most days, but I don’t take that flexibility for granted.

Can I ask you question?

Has anyone here read or heard of books (fiction/non-fiction) that center digital violence (online bullying, doxxing, stalking, etc.) with/without a gendered lens?

I’m working on a bibliobattle event with a local book organization this December, and in addition to organizing it, I’ve suddenly been asked to participat. 😮‍💨 Basically, in a bibliobattle, participants pitch books on a certain topic to an audience who will then vote for the book that sounds most compelling. We’re aligning our event with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which has the theme “digital violence” this year.

However, I quickly realised that I don’t think I’ve read a book featuring or centering digital violence before? I feel like I’ve heard of a few books in recent years, but I can’t recall them and a Google search for titles hasn’t rung any bells either! Help! So, I thought who better to take this to than the book community?! I hope someone can suggest titles for me to check out in prep for this event—I’d love to hear your suggestions/recommendations!

ICYMI here’s what I posted this week:

I hope everyone’s doing well and treating themselves with care. Have a great week ahead, friends! 💜

  1. I hope next week is less frantic for you, 6am is definitely too early for work!

With regards to digital violence Laura Bates has two excellent nonfiction titles -Men Who Hate Women – about online misogyny, and The New Age of Sexism. There are some other titles listed here https://womensmediacenter.com/speech-project/10-must-read-books-about-online-harassment-and-free-speech

The fiction I’ve seen is mostly YA oriented but if you search Goodreads Listopia for cyber-bullying or social media influencers there are several to choose from.
    I hope that helps

    • I actually came across The New Age of Sexism on one of my social feeds the day after posting this — not sure who was talking about it now but I’m glad that you’ve brought it up because that’s looking like the one I’ll probably read. It sounds very interesting, but I’ll keep an eye out for Bates’ other book too.

Thanks so much for sharing that resource and the tip about the Goodreads Listopedia as well! 💜 I appreciate it so much!

  2. I’m not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for but I thought I’d share it anyways. Years ago I read a book called Criminal Utopia: Fear the Hacker by J. Arthur Squiers and I really enjoyed it.

  3. Oh that’s such a cool idea! Which bookstore is it?

I think I remember reading a couple YA thrillers where the characters started by receiving threatening text revealing secrets or something, but can’t think the title right on top of my head right now. I’ll get back to you if I remember anything!

I haven’t read anything, but I think Asking for It has some element of it- photo taken while the mc is being sexually assaulted… But I’m not sure if the pictures got distributed or something since I haven’t read it. You might want to check it out!
