#TopTenTuesday: Excellent & Engaging “E”

We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is: Books that Include/Feature [insert your favorite theme or plot device here] (for example: unreliable narrators, coming of age, darkness vs. light, time travel, metafiction, a specific romantic trope, good vs. evil. cliffhangers, flashbacks, plot twists, red herrings, loose ends, stories within stories, meet cutes, symbolism, etc.) (submitted by Alice @ The Wallflower Digest) but—surprise, surprise—I’m going rogue… Again! 🫣

Okay, I wasn’t planning on going off-prompt today but when I thought about what to choose to fill in this week’s topic, my mind drew a blank. After sitting with the topic for a while, nothing popped up on my book brain radar so I decided to go rogue as I don’t need the stress, lol.

I’m bringing it back to the alphabet challenge (check out: A, B, C, D) and today we’ve made it to the letter E. The following titles have all been rated 4-5 stars and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend all of them!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Emergency Contact
The Empress of Salt and Fortune
Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost TalesEmily Wilde Series
Everything For YouBergman Brothers Series

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone
Evidence of the Affair
The Exception to the Rule
Exit Strategy
The Murderbot Diaries
Exile

What books with the letter “E” have you found exciting and engaging? Have you read any of these or are they on your TBR?

    • That’s an interesting take away! I feel like I do read a lot of books that are similar (most especially in the romance genre) but everything just fled my mind when it came down to thinking about it for this topic, haha. 🤣 Glad I’m not the only who seemed to find this one tough!

  2. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and Emergency Contact are both titles I’ve seen on lists quite a lot through the years and I think both are books I’ve considered adding to my TBR. May have to look them both up again and see why I never did! 🙂

  3. Ooh fun list, I love alphabet style challenges & posts. So far I’ve only read one of these (Emily Wilde) but a lot of the others are ones I’m excited to get to. Empress Of Salt & Fortune has caught my eye several times due to its stunning cover and a review of the latest book in the series made me realise how desperately I want to read it. I love the sound of Evidence Of The Affair, although I want to pick up Evelyn Hugo & Daisy Jones first. Exit Strategy is a 2025 must read before the adaptation comes out. Plus I’ve seen a lot of praise for quite a few of the others. So this is kind of like a chunk of my TBR by itself 😂 As for excellent & exciting E books: An Ember In The Ashes & Empire Of Storms are two that I’ve read.

    • I always see people doing alphabet challenges/posts but the first time I did one was for TTT and I’m enjoying it as my “rogue day” topics if I can’t think of anything else to do! Empress of Salt and Fortune was so good and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up loving it and how much I took to the message of the story. I hope you enjoy it if you do decide to check it out (I would recommend it too, hehe)! Evelyn Hugo & Daisy Jones are amazing books and I hope that you love them!! Aah, I would highly recommend doing Daisy Jones via audiobook, if that’s your thing, because having the full-cast honestly made my reading experience a million times more impactful and I felt so immersed in their stories! 😍 Also, I had no idea that Exit Strategy was getting an adaptation! Is that going to be on Netflix or something? I loved An Ember in the Ashes and really enjoyed Empire of Storms (from what I can remember) and have been meaning to re-read both those series so I can finally finish them since I still have yet to read the concluding books, lol. I feel like I say this so much (pretty sure I said it to you on an IG comment the other day as well? Haha)

      • Ooh I’ll have to watch out for more in the future then 😉 I definitely plan to, I just keep hoping it’ll go on offer as my library doesn’t stock it and I’m not sure about paying RRP for a novella 🙈 that’s wonderful to hear about the message too though. It’s so powerful when they resonate with you. Thank you. Here’s hoping, especially given all of the hype surrounding them 😂 ooh I’ll have to look into the audiobook of it then. That does make sense given the kind of story and format it’s written in though. I don’t really know tbh. Leslie might as she’s the one who told me. All I know is that it has Alexander Skarsgård in it 😂 ah right I totally understand. I got to the Ember series late so I binge read it in one go. I fell behind on TOG though and it took me ages to finally get around to rereading and finishing the series. I hope you love both whenever you get to them 🥰 and I definitely remember you saying it about a few other things recently 😂 it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who does it though.

  4. This is a fun take on the topic!
Eleanor Oliphant has been in my list for a while, got to get around to it!
Evidence of the Affair was surprisingly good for me – I’d honestly read Reid’s grocery lists at this point 😂
And for some reason, Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone just didn’t do it for me – it was one where the title took me in but the writing didn’t follow through :/

    • I’ve been meaning to re-read Oliphant for ages since I picked it up back when it first came out but I remember enjoying it a lot. I hope you do too whenever you get around to it! I was also pleasantly surprised by Evidence of the Affair! Not what I expected (I don’t think, lol) but yeah, that’s defo the same way I feel about Reid’s books even though I’ve got tons more to read off her list! And you know, I totally get what you mean with Everyone in My Family. I ended up really loving it but it was rough going for a fair bit because I wasn’t sure how to feel about the quirky sarcastic writing but I feel it’s also very Australian, haha! 😆

      • Reid’s backlist is extensive – and no book has disappointed me yet!
Ah I actually didn’t know that about the writing – might just be me not being used to it but I know I’m in the minority for that one!

  5. haha I love that you just decided to do your own thing to avoid stress 👏🏽
The Empress of Salt and Fortune is one I’ve been meaning to read for a while! And that cover for Exile is really making me want to pick up the Keeper of Lost Cities series!

    • I got enough stress in my daily life as it is these past few weeks, haha. I really didn’t want to add on to it! 🤣 I hope you love Empress of Salt and Fortune. I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed that book but I highly recommend it! The Keeper of the Lost Cities series (what I’ve read of it so far) is a fun adventure-filled MG fantasy series that I can’t wait to continue reading. Great binge-able reads!

      • Oh no, I hope this upcoming week is a bit more chill for you. Thanks, I really like novella series so I’ve had my eye on it for a while. That’s so wonderful ❤️ & I’ve seen that MG series around a lot but don’t know anything about it except that it looks fun lol I hope it continues being good 😀

    • YES—too much freedom and not nearly enough brain power for me to think of something creative and fun! 😂 Oh well, I guess I can save it for a rainy TTT day, lol. I need to read the other books in the series but I’ve heard great things about it. Is there already news about when the next one will come out? He just released the one set at Christmas at the end of 2024, right? I hope you enjoy it whenever it does come!

      • I haven’t heard anything about when a new one will be coming out. The Christmas one is pretty new, so it might be a little while. Guess I’ll have to be patient. I’m not very good at that!

    • It’s SO good! SO underrated too, I think? I haven’t heard many people talk about it on the blogosphere! I need to continue with Keeper of the Lost Cities series as well. I honestly can’t remember what book I stopped on (I think it might’ve been the fourth or fifth) but they’re really fun action-packed binge-able reads!

      • Yeah, I never really saw many people talking about it. I listened to the audio of Lost Cities and really liked it! I thought it was such a great MG book. I am hoping to actually continue and catch up this year. We will see. haha!

    • I read it so long ago and I wonder if I’d still feel the same way about it now… But I very clearly remember how much I loved it and how emotional it made me when read it years ago. I hope you enjoy it if ever/whenever you pick it up 🙂
