We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Things That Make Me Instantly Want to Read a Book (these can be auto-buy authors, tropes you love, if an author you love blurbed it, settings, genres, etc.)
I decided to make it easy for myself and keep things simple this week by listing ten elements/tropes in a book that will make me want to pick it up. Whether these things are mentioned in the blurb, in the promo or in a review, if a book contains these elements, I’m 100% more interested in picking it up. Since I mostly read romance and fantasy I’ll be breaking it down into those two categories and to go a little extra, I’ll pick a few of my favourite books with these elements in them! 😍

In romance…
- Hate to love romance
- Grumpy/sunshine
- Small town setting
- Characters who love books/reading
- Diverse reads. Give me BIPOC characters + amazing mental health, disability, and cultural rep.

In fantasy…
- Found family. Give me all the feel-good vibes!
- Mythology/Folklore of the non-Western variety. For example, Asian/South East Asian/Pacific. Or if it’s of the “Western” variety, from different places such as Wales or Eastern Europe. Or if it’s “Western” give me a different perspective!
- Magic. I mean, duh, right? I especially love when the magic is unique!
- Romance. Yes, I’m talking about romantasy (romance fantasy) but I also love when there’s a romance that’s not central to the storyline in fantasy.
- Quests/Adventure. I loved getting to know characters and worlds as they adventure across the lands.

What elements in a book will make you want to pick it up? Do you enjoy any of these elements too? What’re some of your favourite elements/books with them in it?

Big yes to small towns and grumpy-sunshine pairings. Love those! 🙂

I really enjoyed The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea and The Drowned Woods, too. I also really enjoyed Spice Road by Maya Ibrahim although that one admittedly took me a little while to warm up to but by the end I was super invested! Those are the first titles that come to mind off the top of my head right now 😂

I don’t read much romance or fantasy, but I still love a lot of the tropes you mentioned. Small-town settings are a favorite of mine as well as enemy-to-lovers romances. Great list!
Happy TTT!

It’s always fun to read a story featuring a reader. I like when they share some of my reading quirks. Small towns are something I enjoy as well

I love reading about readers especially when they’re so relatable! Small towns are definitely a fave setting for me. The romances are always so cosy and it’s even better when you have quirky meddling small town members that add a measure of levity to the story!

The element of small town romances I usually enjoy is the meddlers in the towns. LOL

Love that you split this in two! I’m also a big fan of magic and a good quest story. The books you picked to illustrate each point are perfect.

It was easiest for me to come up with a list by splitting it in two 😂 I mostly read these two genres anyway!

Love this, Dini! I included a few of these on my post too, but completely forgot about ‘adventure’ which is something I love in a fantasy book 😀

Found family is like catnip to me, any hint of that in a book and I will be right on it!
