Sundays in Bed With… #MyWeeklyWrapUp [164]

We’re back with another Sundays in Bed With… meme! This meme dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent your time curled up reading in bed with or which book you wish you had time to read today!

I’ve spent all of my Sunday in bed reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. I’ve literally only started this morning and have been patchily reading it between bouts of sleep but I’m enjoying it so far. The writing is beautiful and so descriptive so I’m excited to keep reading and to see what all the hype is about.

📖 SYNOPSIS

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

It’s finally happened… COVID has caught up to me and has knocked me flat! I was feeling absolutely fine on Wednesday night when I went to bed but then I woke up violently feverish at around 5AM on Thursday and though I tested negative that day, I tested positive Friday evening. *deep sigh* I’m triple jabbed so I guess my case would be considered mild but wow, it’s really horrible. Every moment I’m awake is so uncomfortable and what’s worse is that I’m so uncomfortable that I can’t sleep (which is probably not helped by my general insomnia either). To top it all off, I lost my sense of taste yesterday and now everything tastes like nothing and it really sucks! 🥲 Anyway, I’m gonna stop whining now because it is what it is. At least I’m at home surrounded by people to take care of me and since it’s now day four, I’m hoping I’ll start feeling much better soon. 🤞🏽

I guess the one good thing about being sick and unable to do anything or even go outside my room is that I have plenty of time to read undisturbed, and I’ve definitely taken advantage of that. I finished two buddy reads this weekend alone and well, at least I feel a little accomplished. 😄

ICYMI, here’s what I posted on the blog this week:

sleep on the floor – the lumineers

I hope you’ve all had a good weekend and that you have a great week ahead! Take care of yourselves and of each other, friends 🖤

  1. I guess it’s mild that you’re not in the hospital on a respirator, but still sounds terrible. I had it last year – 1 day high fever, 3 days no smell, but headache and body aches for weeks. Still, not worse than the time I had the flu. *shudder* I hope you can get the rest you need to heal quickly.

    • Thank goodness it didn’t escalate that much although this lingering congestion and cough are really frustrating! I had a high fever for one day but mild fevers for 2 days after. I’m now getting back my smell and taste though it’s only partial still! Can’t wait till it’s fully back 😭

    • Hehe, perhaps the *only* good thing about being sick and excused from other responsibilities (like work, lol)! 😂 It took a while but I just tested negative and I’m feeling much better than before, despite some lingering symptoms. Thank you, friend 💜

  2. I hope you get to feeling better soon, and I’m glad you’ve got help and can just take it easy and heal. The writing in Daughter of the Moon Goddess is really beautiful, and I’ve seen some people saying the writing in the sequel is even better. I hope you continue to enjoy the story! 🙂

    • Thanks, Chris! It took a while to get here (or so it feels) but I’m now feeling much better. I did think the writing in DotMG was gorgeous and the world-building was so vivid! Can’t wait to see what it’s like in the second book now 😍

  3. I hope you start to feel better soon, Dini! I’m glad it’s mild symptoms, but it’s always horrible especially if you can’t sleep which means your body is not resting enough.
I really liked Daughter of the Moon Goddess! I hope you enjoy it too! ❤️

    • Thanks, Andie! I’ve got some lingering symptoms but I’m feeling much better now and have already tested negative. It was horrible when I struggled to stay asleep despite my body demanding rest! I did enjoy Daughter of the Moon Goddess but sadly, not as much as everyone else seemed to. I’m still gonna continue with the second book though, I think! 😂 I hope you’re feeling better now, too. Take care of yourself, friend! 💜

  4. I’m sorry Dini!!! I caught covid in May and luckily I only felt like I had the flu for about 6 hours before I got better. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise!

I read the Moon Goddess’ Daughter and the ending was really interesting!

    • Thank you! It’s been slow-going but I’m now feeling much better than when I wrote this. It took a while for me to get to this “there’s a light!” stage but we made it! 😂 The ending of Moon Goddess was interesting but I also felt like a conclusion on its own without the need for a second book? But I’m still gonna read the second book (eventually)! 😂

  6. Hope you’re feeling better soon! And glad to hear that you’re able to read. My eyes hurt so bad when I got it that I couldn’t read. I had an intense pressure behind my eyes that stayed for about 4 days. It sucked. My fever only lasted a day, so I’m hoping for you that yours is short lived, too. My mom’s fever lasted 2 weeks. It’s no fun either way!

    • It took a little while for my brain to clear off the COVID fog but I’m now feeling much better than when I wrote this. My eyes did hurt, but mostly late at night when I was too tired but still unable to sleep cos my body was not having it. 😂 My fever lasted a couple of days but only one day was very high, thankfully, it’s just this congestion and cough that is persisting.

  7. Oh, Dini, I’m so sorry COVID found you at last! T_T I hope it goes away quickly and you feel better soon. (I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago…first time.) Not sure how well you’re up to it, but hopefully reading will help pass the time. I finished HEART OF THE SUN WARRIOR when I needed the distraction, haha. Speedy recovery, my friend!

    • I thought I was one of the lucky ones who escaped its clutches but alas, not so. I’m feeling much better now though, thankfully, though this congestion is annoyingly lingering. The one good thing is that I’ve had ample time to do nothing but read! I just finished the first book in that duology and have been thinking of picking up the second one soon(ish). Glad to hear it provided the needed distraction! 😃

      • The congestion lingered a while for me, too. I still have a dry cough as well. I learned from others after I returned to work that they had similar experiences and that the cough & throat gunk lasted for about a month. Booooo. So, just so you know in case you find yourself in a similar recovery boat. I’m glad you’re getting a lot of reading done, even if not in the most ideal of circumstances. 😛

    • Thanks, Tasya! I’ve finally stepped out of the COVID brain fog and I’m feeling less achy and sickly. This wave *is* really silent but I do know three other people in my office that just tested positive. It’s definitely still everywhere, no matter what people say/think/do! 🫣
