Let’s Talk Bookish: Seasonal Reading

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits, and it’s where we get to discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts! If you want to join in the bookish discussion fun, check out the September 2022 prompts!

Now without further ado… The topic asks us about:

Reading seasonally

(SUGGESTED BY MIKAELA @ MIKAELA READS)
Prompts: Do you read seasonally? Do you like a beach read in summer, a spooky book in the autumn and holiday-themed ones in winter? What’s your favourite season? Do you have any favourite seasonal reads?

DO I READ SEASONALLY?

The short answer is no, I don’t with the main reason being I live in the tropics, so there’s really only one season—hot, or two if you count “hotter-and-rainy” as a season (we do). Since I also live on an island, beach/poolside reading is something that I luckily get to do quite often but there are definitely certain books that I prefer to read while laying out in the sun. That said, I love me a good list so whenever the “seasonal TBR” prompts come around, I happily take part in them and occasionally pretend that I live in a place where seasonal reading applies. 😂 Do I have a favourite season? Maybe it’s not surprising but I love Autumn/Winter because living in a place with soaring temperatures, I can appreciate (much) cooler weather. It’s also the perfect weather to not have to get out of the house and to cosy up under blankets and spend all day being lazy and reading!

SPRING/SUMMER READING

I think the perfect spring/summer read for me is a thriller/mystery, a light contemporary (preferably YA) or romance—although to be fair, I would read these genres at any time of the year, lol. When the heat is so intense when I’m sitting poolside or on the beach, I like to read something that’s not too heavy and doesn’t require a lot of thinking, but is still a good time and keeps me hooked!

Recommendations:

AUTUMN READING

I think autumn is probably the moodiest season to choose reads for and most people tend to gravitate towards spookier or scarier reads this season. I’m a major chicken so I don’t focus a lot on horror or scary books but I can step out of my comfort zone and appreciate them every now and then! I find this season is perfect for those intensely atmospheric reads!

Recommendations:

WINTER READING

I know people read holiday-themed books all year round but although my family doesn’t celebrate the holidays and neither does it get cold here, I find it only fitting to read these holiday books during the winter season! A lot of the books (at least on my list) are romances which I’m totally here for. I feels there’s a certain energy in the air during this time that’s full of hope and new beginnings just waiting around the corner, although I know it’s not a happy time for everyone.

Recommendations:

Are you a seasonal reader or are you more of a mood reader? Do you enjoy a seasonal read every now and then? What’s your favourite season and seasonal read (if you have one)?

  1. Dini!! I love the recs you paired for each season. I’m such a mood reader but I have yet to find a pattern in my seasonal reading?? And I actually have seasons where I live. Starting to feel cold here yesterday and I’m not loving it ☹️ I think thrillers for spring reading is a GREAT choice. Haha the winter is a bit too dark out to also be reading super dark things

  2. Lol yeah I agree it’s hard to be a seasonal reader when you live in a 2 season country 😅 I’d say I gravitate towards the spookier/darker reads during the second half of the year, when the rain got intense and the temperature dropped a liiitle bit. Thunderstorms are perfect for those kind of read!

  3. JHDSHDHJSDJ THIS WHOLE ENTIRE POST IS SO SO NICE AND I LOVE IT OK??? also this is too relatable and am maybe sobbing a little like that: “there’s really only one season” its hot year-round where i live too, THOUGH MORE OF THE DRY KIND, and theres hardly ever rain. like this one day of the year where the streets are soaked and people run wild. ITS FUN. (although i do think having rain only one day in 365 makes us appreciate it so much more) and theres winter where theres the ‘i shall make your teeth chatter’ kind of winds. it gets really really cold at nights, BUT THATS ACTUALLY FUN TOO. because the blankets and the wintery fantasies and the hot chocolate. ALSO HEATERS. I AM ETERNALLY IN LOVE WITH HEATERS. also all those seasonal book recs KIND OF MAYBE MADE MY WHOLE ENTIRE DAY, THE ENTIRETY OF THIS POST IS JUST PERFECTION LIKE THAT.

  4. Same on the weather here girl, hot or hotter…lol but we do get a moment of “cold” in December/January. I never used to be a seasonal reader – maybe only for Christmas but now I look forward to seasonal reads just to get me in the mood since I am such a mood reader. Great post!

    • Haha, I don’t think my reading is ever intentional unless it’s an ARC and most of the time, I start planning to read those with the best intentions and then… End up reading something else completely. 🙈 It’s terrible, haha!

  5. I love the IDEA of seasonal reading and I do TRY reading darker books in fall, cozy books in winter and romances/contemporary in summer but in the end I’m just a slave of my reading moods and I end up going for whatever anyway 🙂

  6. Ahhh I love this!! I adore lighter contemporaries during summer too – they just fit the seasonal vibes so well!! Autumn is THE season for dark academia reads for me ahah! I don’t read too much horror either (BECAUSE I’M TERRIFIED) but I really should get to some books from the genre soon!
