Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:
“Three weddings.
Three funerals.
A better person would have been devastated, but Alessa bowed her head to hide dry eyes as she knelt before the jewel-encrusted coffin on the altar.”

Do you recognise the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

Three weddings. Three funerals. Alessa’s gift from the gods is supposed to magnify a partner’s magic, not kill every suitor she touches.
Now, with only weeks left until a hungry swarm of demons devours everything on her island home, Alessa is running out of time to find a partner and stop the invasion. When a powerful priest convinces the faithful that killing Alessa is the island’s only hope, her own soldiers try to assassinate her.
Desperate to survive, Alessa hires Dante, a cynical outcast marked as a killer, to become her personal bodyguard. But as rebellion explodes outside the gates, Dante’s dark secrets may be the biggest betrayal. He holds the key to her survival and her heart, but is he the one person who can help her master her gift or destroy her once and for all?
I’ve heard so many amazing things about This Vicious Grace by Emily Thiede and I’ve been excited to read this fantasy debut for quite a while now. I have to be honest though, the hype surrounding this has me a little scared to pick it up because I want to love it so much and I’m worried that I won’t. 😂 I’m still really eager to pick it up though and hope to do so ASAP!

Have you read This Vicious Grace or is it also on your TBR?

This Vicious Grace sounds amazing!! It’s definitely joining the TBR. Lovely post!! ❤

Those are great first lines, Dini. Someone else highlighted this one as well, but I can’t remember who.

Ooh, that’s awesome! I saw this making the rounds a fair bit before it came out and it got so hyped (for me anyway), so I hope the rest of the book lives up to this opener 😂

To be fair, I’ve also been living under a rock for the past several months, so it very well may be everywhere and I still just haven’t seen it. xD
