#TopTenTuesday: New to Me Authors I Discovered in 2021

So, we’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is: New to Me Authors I Discovered in 2021

If you’ve seen my yearly wrap up or read any of my ‘favourites’ posts for my 2021 reads, none of these authors (or books) will be a surprise. I didn’t really keep proper track of it but I’m pretty sure that the majority of the books I read last year were by new-to-me authors and I enjoyed a lot of them! Since the majority of my reads were romance I’ve grouped the authors into genres: first, everything else (including fantasy, mystery, contemporary) followed by romance. Also, this is a list of 15 authors because it was too hard to narrow it down more and this is actually already quite narrowed down! 😂

Akwaeke Emezi
Holly Jackson
Adrian Tchaikovsky
Martha Wells
Fonda Lee

Emily Tesh
Cat Rector
Danielle L. Jensen
KJ Charles
Anita Kelly

Brighton Walsh
Lucy Parker
Ali Hazelwood
Katee Robert
Lisa Kleypas

What new-to-me authors did you discover in 2021? Did any of them become one of your newest all-time faves? Were any of the authors on this list new-to-you as well last year?

  1. I have heart eyes over that last row because I adore those authors so much!!
I also read my first K.J Charles last year and really enjoyed their writing. I need to get back into that series and finish it up. I read Danielle L. Jensen YA wayy back but hadn’t read anything new from her until last year and The Bridge Kingdom wrecked me!

    • YAAS! A lot of the new romance faves I discovered was thanks to your recs, Nick! 😍 I love KJ Charles’ series and I can’t wait to read more of their books! SO so good. Also, ugh, The Bridge Kingdom books absolutely wrecked me too and I can’t wait for MORE books in that series 😍

    • Space spiders!? Don’t know how I feel about that (which one is it? haha) but I’m definitely keen to check out more of his books! Was pleasantly surprised by how accessible his writing is for the non-hardcore SF readers 😊 I hope you enjoy his book whenever you get to it!

    • Kleypas has so many books it’s kind of intimidating but I’m picking them up based on discussions I’m seeing on romance book twitter and seeing the hype around the couples makes me pretty excited to dive into them 😂 I would definitely recommend the Murderbot books if you want to try adult SF and if you like compelling characters!

I really can’t wait for the next book in the Battle Royal series to come out though—like I want it yesterday please cos I know I’m gonna looove it 😂 I’m defo gonna have to check out her London Celebrities series too! Also, yes, I would highly rec Jade City (the audiobook is great if you like audios)—imo, it has some of the best world building and character development that I’ve read in SFF! I hope you enjoy it if you try it 😊

  4. They would have all been new to me, as well. I haven’t even heard of many of them. Glad you found so many new authors.

    • Yes, I loved Vivek Oji and would recommend it. It’s so beautifully written but such a heartwrenching story (in the best way)! You can check out my review for it if you want to see my full thoughts on it! 😊 I didn’t think I read so many new-to-me authors in 2021 but apparently so, lol!
