Goodreads Monday – The Shadows by Alex North

Welcome back to Goodreads Monday! It’s been a very hot minute since I did one but I figured I might as well get back into it! This weekly meme was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners and it invites you to pick a book from your TBR and explain why you want to read it. Easy enough, right? Feel free to join in if you want to! I’ll be using a random number generator to pick my books from my insanely long GR Want-to-read list.*

*Sorry if a book has been featured twice. I need to make better note of which ones I’ve done already!

This week’s featured book is The Shadows by Alex North. This is a mystery/thriller with some horror that was published in 2020.

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile–always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet–and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree–and his victim–were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and senile, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It’s not long before things start to go wrong. Reading the news, Paul learns another copycat has struck. His mother is distressed, insistent that there’s something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago.

It wasn’t just the murder.
It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again…

Why do I want to read it?

So, we know me by now and I don’t do the horror scary ghosty stuff. That’s just not my jam. BUT I did read North’s The Whisper Man and while it was pretty creepo, I survived the night and surprisingly didn’t find it was as creepy or scary as I expected (or as how most readers built it up to be). I guess that’s made me feel a little brave because I immediately added this one to my TBR when I heard about it 😂 Although this sounds insanely terrifying and The Ultimate Chicken™️ in me is protesting loudly(!), there’s a part of me that’s super curious about it so I’m gonna check it out. Lol. I haven’t really seen many reviews for it and neither have I scrolled through them on Goodreads so I’m not sure what the reception was but it does have a 3.75 star average, so I guess we’ll see! 🙈

Have you read The Shadows or is it on your TBR?
