Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

Since last week I managed to finish four books but I also decided to DNF one. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now, I’m quite proud that I’m actually DNFing books this year. It’s been so hard for me to do but baby steps… We’re getting there! But also… I still have to write reviews for all of these. *le super sigh* Yay for reading lots but the struggle to review is so real! 🙃

Subversive (Clandestine Magic #1) by Colleen Crowley ★★★★☆
I was immediately intrigued by this dystopian society where males reign supreme in every aspect especially to do with magic. There were many layers to the plot(s) and it covers so many issues but the author does a fantastic job of bringing it all together: we’re advocating for women’s rights, subverting the male dominated magical system, hiding government secrets and all while getting a deliciously slow-burning enemies-to-lovers romance! Plus the characters were so easy to root for! I can’t wait to read on. Will likely do a series review for this? RTC.

Spellmaker (Spellbreaker Duology #2) by Charlie N. Holmberg ★★★★☆
This was an action-packed and ultimately satisfying conclusion to Holmberg’s latest historical fantasy duology. It was so rejoin Elsie and Bacchus as they try to beat the villain at their own game. There was more magic, murder, and mystery, and I was 100% here for it. This book is out in March 2021 so my review will be posted closer to pub day! RTC.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas ★★★★★
Oh, what didn’t I love about this book? Honestly, nothing. LOL this was fast-paced, full of humour and so rich in diversity. I loved learning about the rich tradition and culture of the Brujxs but I also loved to see Yadriel rise up and stick it to tradition (while still being respectful) in the best way. I absolutely loved Yadriel, Julian and Maritza! There were a lot of heartbreaking moments in the story, especially with Yadriel’s family being unable to accept who he is, and the sad histories with Julian and his friends, but it was ultimately also very heartwarming and rewarding. Not ashamed to admit I got teary! RTC.

The Existence of Amy by Lana Grace Riva ★★★★½
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from the author earlier this year and although it took me all year to finally read it, I’m so glad that I did. This was such an emotional book for me and yeah, the water works were doing some serious flowing, but a lot of it hit home for me. This was very much a character driven book and it’s a very raw portrayal of someone living with mental illness, so definitely proceed with care if you’re sensitive (like me!). It’s well worth the read though. RTC.

I’ve finally made it to 50% with Crowns of Croswald and… Well, it’s not a guaranteed finish yet. I’m really tempted to DNF it because I’m struggling so much to care about what’s happening. While the magic has some unique elements, I’m not connecting with the characters and I’m finding the world building a little lacking. I’m feeling guilty at the thought of DNFing though because I got this from the author… So let’s see how it goes!

I still haven’t felt the pull to pick up Permanent Record again and it’s making me lean towards DNFing it? It makes me really sad to think that so for now it’s staying on but ugh, I’m just not looking forward to reading it? I’ve started three books on a whim: House of Earth and Blood, Among the Beasts & Briars, and Starfish. I might focus on Starfish first because my brain is feeling a little sluggish and unprepared for world building, also it’s already making me really emotional and I’m only 60 pages in!

Here are some possibilities for the pile that I will surely be straying from–probably to read more Christmas romances? I don’t know. Because I’m a trash human I do have a few overdue ARCs that I’d like to tackle ASAP (definitely not making it by the end of 2020 LOL) but I also have upcoming blog tours that I need to prepare for starting next week!
