Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
First lines:
“Gina Luca knew one thing right down to the very marrow of her wedding-planner bones: brides were the devil. And a bridezilla on her fourth round of tequila shots during the reception? A highly flammable devil capable of anything, including hijacking the videographer and projecting an impromptu Kiss Cam on the movie theater-sized screen behind the bridal party dais.”
Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?
*drumroll please!*
It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…
Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard. I recognize him immediately. The sexiest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.
But then he kisses me. And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything. Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off. But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers. Because this is not a make-over story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…
I stumbled across Butterface while browsing ebooks today and since it was free to buy I scooped up! The fact that such a term (Butterface) exists, kind of makes me a little uncomfortable? I’m also approaching this with caution as some points of the synopsis have me going *hmm* but I’m hoping that I will enjoy this more than I expect! I’m liking this first paragraph so I’m feeling hopeful.
Have you read Butterface or is it on your TBR?
Okay, I’m not familiar with this books at all, but that is a great opening! Looks like it’s still free right now, so I snagged a copy.

I’m with you on the synopsis scaring me a little, but that opening is awesome. I already picked this one up back in January but didn’t read it. I might just go ahead and give it a try now.

This wasn’t on my radar but I couldn’t order this fast enough on Kindle. Those first lines are amazing! I agree with you about the synopsis and the title, that I only read after ordering it, but maybe it’ll be good. 🙂
