It’s the first Goodreads Monday of 2020, friends! This weekly meme was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners and it invites you to pick a book from your TBR and explain why you want to read it. Easy enough, right? Feel free to join in if you want to! I’ll be using a random number generator to pick my books from my insanely long GR Want-to-read list.
So last week was his son’s book and this week it’s The King’s turn with The Institute. I may not be a fan of horror but apparently I do like giving in to the hype and adding them to my shelves in the hopes that I will, one day, read them 🤣 This horror/thriller has a 4.21 star average with 83.8k+ ratings and 10.2k+ reviews, which is pretty great!
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”
In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.
As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is Stephen King’s gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don’t always win.
Why do I want to read it?
So… Real talk? The two covers for this book are 90% part of the reason why I want to read this in the first place. It looks damn good on my shelf and I’m not even gonna lie about it 🤣 I love the vibrance of the blue and it has my gears turning and wondering just what the book is about (outside of the synopsis). I’m ready to be psychologically thrilled and horrified!!! I think… So far I’ve actually only read one King book, Under the Dome, which I remember really loving and it had me asking myself why I hadn’t read more of his work before! I have quite a few of his titles on my shelf and so I guess I should make some headway with them (by adding another book to the list… lmao) 😂

Ha! “The two covers for this book are 90% part of the reason why I want to read this in the first place.” There’s nothing like a good cover-buy! I’ve only read three Stephen King books, but what I’ve read, I’ve enjoyed. He definitely is a master storyteller. I just have to be in the right mood for him. 😉

I’ve only read one of his books but it was less of a spooky horror and more psychological thriller, which I can totally deal with! I’m looking forward to trying more of The King! 😂

LOL! Buying for the cover and hoping to one day be psychologically thrilled! Funnies thing is, I get it! I have a lot of King books on my shelves that I’ve never touched!

Haha yep, this is a mood. This is one of the more “recent” additions to my actual shelf (like 2020 recent 😂) but I also have tons of reads to prioritise before this too!

Not a huge King fan, but this one does sound intriguing and something I might like. Good post.

I’ve only read one of his books and I did enjoy it but it’s been 10 years since I read it! 😅 Let’s see whether I’ll like anything else he’s written. Some of the adaptations of his books are my favourites though like Green Mile and Shawshank (though this was a novella)!

Fair enough! He is the master of horror and all that, right? I have a few of his books on my TBR but I think of the less “dark” variety coz I’m a total chicken 😅
