We’re back with another Top 5 Saturday! I might’ve missed last week’s topic but I will come back to it at some point 🙂 Just in case you don’t know Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books and it’s where we list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favourite books, books you loved/hated) based on the week’s topic. Well, I definitely came up blank when I saw this prompt because books about spies aren’t necessarily the highest on my list? I mean, I like the idea of spy books but I just don’t normally read them. Though thanks to Goodreads I’ve discovered that I have a few spy books waiting to be read!
I’ve had The Alice Network sitting on my TBR cart for a really long time. I love historical fiction and I’ve heard some really great things about this book. I feel like I have to gear myself up to read it though so I can be emotionally prepared 😂
I haven’t read much YA historical fiction but I’ve heard a lot about how great Code Name Verity is! Just reading the synopsis has me so very intrigued and I’m looking forward to picking it up eventually.
I feel like Ken Follett is so underrated lol I’ve only read one of his series in full (The Century Trilogy) but I could not put them down. All three were almost 1,000 pages long and I sped through them like I’ve never done before. I think it took me just a little over one week to finish the series! So I’m excited to try Eye of the Needle to see if all of Follett’s books are as good!
I actually forgot about this book but I remember it first coming on my radar because it got made into a movie Jennifer Lawrence and the trailer looked interesting but I never did end up watching the movie. When I realised it Red Sparrow was a book first I added it to my TBR. It sounds intense!
John Le Carré’s books kind of intimidate me because I always feel like it’ll go flying over my head 😂 But I was intrigued when I found out The Tailor of Panama was based on a book bbecause I knew it was made into a movie with Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Geoffrey Rush forever ago. Heavily political books aren’t really my jam at all… but I’d read this one! It sounds really good.

Oooh these sound good! I was like you and really struggled to think of ones so I cheated a little bit and went down the ‘political’ spy kind of route 🙈😂. Great post.

I read Le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and loved it! A chewy read for sure but oooooh so much intrigue, twists, turns, duplicity etc. You’ve reminded me that I need to read more by him :)))

Yeah! I didn’t know that either but it’s actually a trilogy! Never saw the movie so I don’t know if it covers all the books or just the first. Definitely curious about it though!

Guilty of never having read a spy book. I’ve always been tempted but don’t quite know where to start. James Bond was calling to me but something has always made me hold back.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one spy book that I’ve read 😅 I’ve always been intrigued by like the Jason Bourne series has always looked interesting but I just never picked them up? Haha James Bond sounds like a good place as any to start! I think I’m going to go for Alice Network ^_^

Oooh this meme is such a cool idea!! I haven’t read any of those you listed but ones I enjoyed before were the CHERUB series by Muchamore and…hmm. Seems like I haven’t read many spy books!

I realise I definitely watch more spy movies/shows than I read spy books 😅 I’ve never heard of the CHERUB series. Sounds interesting though!

Same here! I think I definitely enjoy watching spy things more than reading about them? But I also haven’t read many (I can literally only think of one) lol curious about these books though!

I definitely went more with YA spy books, but think I would love the historical fiction ones as well. There are so many spy novels set in the WWII era. I did watch Red Sparrow and actually really liked it, but I have no idea how it compares to the book.

I think I definitely gravitate more towards the historical fiction spy theme as I love historical fiction. I’m really excited to check out Alice Network as I’ve heard lots of great things. The only YA spy book I know of is on this list but some of the ones you listed sounded really good so I’m gonna check them tout too 😀

I think Ally Carter does a great job with YA spy novels and her books are great for when you just want something light and fun. It was really interesting this week to see everyone’s choices. I have a copy of The Huntress by the same woman who wrote The Alice Network but I havent read it yet. I have heard that both are supposed to be really.good

Ooh yes, I’ve also heard great things about both books. I thought The Huntress would also be a spy novel 😅 But I’m looking forward to reading both eventually! It was indeed super fun to see what everyone posted about. Some I had no idea were spy novels and that makes me more excited to read them too 😀

Me too! I had no idea Woven in Moonlight had spy elements to it! There are a lot of good books that I discovered through other people’s posts this week.
