#TopTenTuesday: Avoiding Books on my TBR!

It’s that time of the week again, friends! We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is: books on my TBR that I’m avoiding. Ooh, I think this is a pretty interesting topic and I had to have a proper scour through my shelves to see what’s on there! I have to admit that a high percentage of the books on my actual shelves haven’t been read yet, and that’s not even including the books that are on my Kindle! 🙈 I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I know I won’t be judged by anyone here, right!? 👀 It’s not like I’m intentionally avoiding these books though… I just find that after giving into the excitement of adding them to my actual shelves, I usually find that I move on to other books that’ve already been there… Or maybe even newer books that’ve caught my attention… Do I have a problem? Maybe. I prefer to think of it as just me being a very moody mood reader though! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass #7) by Sarah J. Maas
I honestly just don’t want this series to end. Plus, with my shoddy memory it feels like an age since I read Tower of Dawn and the other books in the series, so I want to refresh my memory before finishing it. Makes sense right? Really, I’m not just putting it off!

Queen of Air and Darkness (The Dark Artifices #3) by Cassandra Clare
This was my first Cassandra Clare series. I don’t know much about this world but I still really enjoyed the first two Dark Artifices books. I haven’t read this yet simply because I don’t want it to end! 😂

Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane
This book has been insanely hyped and FOMO made me go out and get this right away! My dad even got me a signed edition when he was in NY. I always enjoy family sagas, so I think I’m going to love it, but I’m also nervous that it won’t live up to the hype for me!

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim
This is another very hyped book all over bookstagram and again #fomomademedoit. Literally everyone has been praising it though, and it honestly has so many elements I usually love. I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy it but I also just keep pushing it off month after month?!

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I struggle with non-fiction reads (but also that my goal is to try reading more of them each year)! Sapiens sounds really interesting and several of my colleagues have borrowed this and loved it. I’m just worried I’ll find it dull 🙈

Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne
I haven’t read it yet because I’ve heard that the MC is massively unlikable (and not unlike our real life A.J. Finn) and I always struggle with stories with unlikable characters!

With the Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo
Magical realism is kind of intimidating and it doesn’t always gel with me. I am still keen to read this, but I’m proceeding with caution! 😅

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
I have a feeling this book will S-L-A-Y my feelings and so I feel like I really need to be in the right mood to read and process my feelings.

Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars #1) by Elizabeth Lim
I went on for ages about this book before it arrived with my July Owlcrate box! I haven’t touched it since because I think I’ve been craving darker fantasy lately (i.e. The Nevernight Chronicle)!

How to Make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow
This is another book that I’m 100% sure that I have to be in the right frame of mind for before reading because I have no doubt that it’ll leave me a hot emotional mess.

What books have you been avoiding on your TBR?
If you’ve done a TTT for today, please leave your links in the comments so I can mosey over to your blog and check it out! 🙂

    • I have heard soo much about Miracle Creek and tbh I think I’m going to love it because it’s like a court case a la Jodi Picoult (or so it seems) and I usually love that! So let’s see 🙂
Also, yes, they’re staring at me from my TBR cart LOL I was hoping to read With the Fire On High for Standalone September though!

  1. We do not speak of the TBR that exists on the Kindle. It’s an entirely different beasts, sealed behind protective walls and barriers and floating out in the ether so we cannot feel its judgment. xD Oh gosh, but I have a shelf full of books I have yet to read, too, and the struggle is real.

I actually haven’t read any Sarah J. Maas or Cassandra Clare because the hype is real and it feels like there’s so much pressure to like them. I so relate to the nonfiction struggle, too. xD I love the *idea* of reading nonfiction, and I know I should, at least from time to time, but then I’m always afraid I’ll find them boring and it’ll throw me in a slump. I usually try to mix my nonfiction with a fiction, so I’ll read two books at a time and just read X amount of the fiction per week so it doesn’t slow me down lol.

Oh my gosh, totally the same with How to Make Friends with the Dark! I so want to read it, but I need to be in a certain frame of mind that I’m just not in yet.

  2. OMG This is such a great list! Haha I spy Kingdom of Ash! Great minds think alike! Completely agree with you on the reasoning though! I honestly don’t know what I am going to do when this series ends. I’m currently on the fourth book and OMG its getting so good! GAHHHH!!!

Ooooo love that you added Spin the Dawn here! I actually finished it and I thought it was a great start to the series and an interesting spin on Mulan. Can’t wait to post my review on it! Yayy!!! Great post btw! 🙂

    • I don’t know how I missed like half the comments on this post! BUT YES. I heard he’s a right douchebag lol and it makes me want to read it more too but I’m also super picky with my unlikeable characters hahaha it could mean I end up hating a book 😂Ah, us book lovers are all in the same boat with the number of unreads… 🙃

  4. Though it’s not a genre I read much from, I do want to read and own “Spin the Dawn.” It sounds REALLY interesting, so I’m hopeful it’ll be an exception, and be a book I’d actually like! I owned all of (or more of) the Sarah J. Maas books, but unhauled them because I just feel like they wouldn’t be reads I’d like. Hope you enjoy all of these when you do pick them up!! Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland.

  5. I have the same problem! I’ll want a book, NEED a book, then I get it and it… sits. Because there’s a new pretty haha! It is a problem ! Anyway I do want to read Cassandra Clare, and I think Spin the Dawn looks pretty amazing.

  6. I definitely feel you about the whole last in the series thing. I have so many series with one book left, half because I don’t want it to end and half because I can’t remember what happened in the book before. That’s the problem when it’s only one instalment a year and you’ve read 100 other books in between…

  7. STD is really good but definitely wait to be ready for it because it is not dark and IMO (I reviewed it if you want to check it out) on the younger side of YA. But I adored it and the ending was quite something.

  8. Great list Dini! I completely agree with you about Queen of Air and Darkness. I managed to get through Kingdom of Ash but I have to admit I’m the same in avoiding a sequel if I have to re-read the previous books… especially when there are so many of them! I hope you enjoy it when you get around to it 😀

      • It’s pretty much always Jen 😁 my blog partner is quite busy so she pops in from time to time. I really enjoyed KoA and smashed through it in one sitting. It had decent pace and despite the length most of it felt needed. BUT OMG… reading that length in one go probably wasn’t my best idea 😂😂 I was like a zombie for a day afterwards! I tried to avoid spoilers too before reading, so I hope you enjoy it! ❤️

        • In one sitting?! Holy wow, Jen! 🤯 That’s seriously amazing, especially considering the size of the tome! Haha I think I’m going to need to start it on a weekend just in case I can’t put it down then 😅 Y’know, I’m surprised that I’ve managed to avoid all spoilers. It’s a good thing I joined the book community after this came out otherwise I probably would’ve seen something by now 😂

    • Lol yeah, my dad went into an independent bookstore in Brooklyn when he visited the US earlier this year and he scooped up a few signed first editions of books I’d asked him to look out for, and he didn’t even realize 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
I think HTMFWTD is defo going to be a heavy emo one, so I’m saving it up for when I need a real good cry. Haha

    • The cover is really gorgeous! I got the hardback and the naked cover is also just as gorgeous as the sleeve 😍 I heard the magical realism is minor-ish, but hope we both enjoy it when we get to it! 😃

  9. I don’t read much non-fiction either but Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind does sound really interesting! I hope you don’t find it dull if you do decide to read it 🙂

    • Haha I think I’m glad that I’ve read the ToG series on my Kindle coz I don’t see just how chunky the books in this series are 😂
I’m looking forward to read HTMFWTD but I know it’s going to be pretty emotional for me. I’m a crier 😅

  10. How to Make Friends in the Dark is super heavy so I agree you need to be in the right mind to do it. With Fire On High was a great read for me and I totally recommend it!!
