I’ve been kind of MIA on the blog over the past week and so I didn’t share an update last Wednesday. That said, I really haven’t been reading all that much. Since two Wednesdays ago I’ve finished 3 books.
The Duke and Lady Scandal by Christy Carlyle
I had no idea how this wound up on my Kindle shelf, but I didn’t vibe with it. Honestly, for as exciting as it sounded, I was sadly bored? Everything just fell short of the mark for me from the characterisation, mystery and heist plot, and romance. Maybe it’s just me and not the book because it seems to be well-liked/praised but it wasn’t my cuppa at all!
Malice (The Faithful and the Fallen #1) by John Gwynne
This was a re-read with Leslie before we continue with the series, but I admit to remembering nothing from my first read of it a few years ago. It’s so wild how bad my memory is. 😂 But I’m so happy to say that I absolutely loved it! There were some bits that were quite slow and maybe could’ve been chopped, and I have to say that retaining all the players and allegiances were a bit hard to keep track of, but the payoff was 100% worth it!
The Second Death of Locke by V. L. Bovalino
When I think of yearning, I think this book. Like, I can’t recall the last time I read something that was so thick with yearning and I absolutely adored it. This one got me deep in my feels (could also have been the time I was reading it tbh) but I was weepy for a lot of it! 😂 Bovalino’s writing is so stunning and evocative. The way she managed to make me feel every single bit of joy, hope, pain was incredible. I buddy read this with Chris and we both loved it!
I’ve currently got two reads on at the minute, but I’ve really only been focusing on one because I want to finish it. As for the other shorter read, I’ve been saving it to finish binging in one day, so it’s for the weekend!
- Klara and the Sun ⇢ (65%) ⇢ This is my first book by Ishiguro and I’m honestly feeling kinda… “eh” about it? It’s quite slow-paced, which I don’t mind generally, but I feel a bit distant from the stories and characters. Am I just not getting where this book is going or am I not smart enough for it? I don’t know. I’m not really keen on any of the characters either… Klara is interesting but I’ve found all the others quite unlikable. I’ve got lots of questions still too. Let’s see if my mind changes by the end!
- The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol 2 ⇢ (15%) ⇢ This has been such a treat to read so far. I just want to binge it in one sitting but the mood hasn’t struck yet, so really I’m waiting for that to happen. Already though, it’s giving what I hoped it would give so I’m loving it!
I’ve got another read coming up but let’s see where the mood takes me!
