First Lines Friday: 10 July 2026

Happy Friday, book pandas! I’ve decided to start posting for First Lines Friday again since I now have more free Fridays. I can’t believe the last time that I did this Friday meme was back in 2021โ€”time sure does fly. ๐Ÿคญ On that note, I’m going to dive straight in.

Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted byย Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged itย by its opening lines? Here are the rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

First lines:

“Once upon a time when the world was young there was a Martian named Smith. Valentine Michael Smith was as real as taxes but he was a race of one.”

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

Stranger in A Strange Land by Robert A Henlein

A human raised on Mars, Valentine Michael Smith has just arrived on planet Earth. Among his people for the first time, he struggles to understand the social mores and prejudices of human nature that are so alien to him, while his own โ€œpsiโ€ powersโ€”including telepathy, clairvoyance, telekenesis, and teleportationโ€”make him a type of messiah figure among humans.

“Stranger in a Strange Land” grew from a cult favorite to a bestseller to a classic in a few short years. The story of the man from Mars who taught humankind grokking and water-sharingโ€”and loveโ€”it is Robert A. Heinleinโ€™s masterpiece.

Have you read Stranger in A Strange Land or is it on your TBR?

  1. I read this earlier this year for the 1961 book club. I have to say that I was disappointed by it. It definitely hasn’t stood the test of time in my opinion
