Prompts: People frequently talk about reading slumps, but what about blogging slumps? What gives you motivation for blogging? What makes you lose motivation? Have you ever gone through one before? How did you break out of it? What advice would you give to a book blogger who’s in one?

Blogging slumps do happen, but I feel like I don’t see a lot of people really talking about it. Maybe it’s because those who go through blogging slumps

What gives you motivation for blogging? What makes you lose motivation?

There are lots of little things that give me motivation to blog, but mostly it’s really the only place where I can talk about books and my love for stories with people who also share that same love. There is social media but aside from being a different content style, it’s also a very different type of engagement. It also helps that I quite enjoy the act of blogging too. I love writing posts, the sense of accomplishment I get from posting regularly, reading and engaging with people’s comments and their blogs, finding new inspiration, and new books to read, etc. There’s a lot that I love about this platform that has kept me coming back to it for years, and I hope that the joy stays with me! I’m very much a creature of habit, and I’ve mentioned a time or two that I have close to no social life, so outside of work, I pretty much have a daily routine that I love sticking to and blogging fits nicely into that schedule. I have a few weekly memes that I love participating in that motivate me to keep posting!

That said, there are moments when I feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and have zero brain energy to think about writing a blog or implementing that new idea that I thought of. Compared to social media, I do think that trying new things on a blog isn’t as easy, and it does take a bit more time to put together. The lack of time, energy, and that pesky “imposter syndrome” sometimes can demotivate me and have me wondering why I even post at all, lol.

Have you ever gone through a blogging slump before? How did you break out of it?

I have gone through blogging slumps more than a few times over the 6-7 years that I’ve been blogging and most of the time, I just need to let it run its course. Most of the time I’ll announce going on hiatus and take a full break from the blogosphere, meaning I don’t browse or engage on my own or anyone’s blogs.

There’s nothing specific that I really did to break out of it, but I think cutting off from the blogosphere for a period of time helps me. Over time when I’m hiatus (usually a few weeks or so), I’ll start making my way back to the blogosphere by reading other blogs, slowly engaging with people’s content, and that’s how I usually know I’m ready to get back to it.

What advice would you give to someone going through a blogging slump?

I wish that I had more advice about how to get out of a blogging slump but everyone’s reasons for going through one are different and how they choose to handle that will depend entirely on them. Here are some things that have helped me over the years:

            • Listen to what you need and take a break. Life is already a lot without turning something you’re meant to enjoy doing into something that feels a chore. I think when that happens, take a break. It’s often very helpful to take a step back and that can also help you reassess what you want to do or if you want to do things differently.

              • Find content that brings you joy. If you’re bored of your blogging routine, try finding different topics to blog about or maybe even focus on certain posts that you enjoy making (maybe tags or mini reviews?)

              • Create a schedule that works for you. You don’t have to post every day or even three times a week. If feeling overwhelmed sends you into a blogging slump, posting once a week is still great. If it’s even less and it’s once every two weeks, that’s also fine. You should be blogging for yourself and that means finding what works best for you, not everyone else.
