This week’s topic is:
Reading Non-Fiction
Prompts: Happy Non-Fiction November! Do you read non-fiction? If you do read it, what do you love about it? What are your favourite categories to read about (i.e. true crime, historical, memoirs, self-help), and what are some of your favourite NF books? Do you have any tips for those who want to get into reading more non-fiction? If you don’t read non-fiction, what don’t you like about it? Do you think that will change (or has it already changed) over the years?

Do you read non-fiction? If you read it, what do you love about it?
I do read non-fiction sometimes. Every year I tell myself that I should read more non-fiction and I can’t say that I always succeed in doing so. I think I’ll at least read 1 non-fiction per year but it will really depend on my mood. Surprisingly, I’ve already read three non-fiction titles this year and I’m hoping to read a few more this November!
What I enjoy about reading non-fiction is how it opens up the world around me in so many different ways. Although I’m not a big social person in real life, I do enjoy observing people, understanding their behaviour, and simply learning about other humans in general. I’m fascinated by different lived experiences, events, cultures, and how it encourages me to reflect and engage in different ways of thinking and seeing things.
What are your favourite categories to read about (i.e. true crime, historical, memoirs, self-help)?
My favourite category has to be true crime and it’s the one I’ve read the most of. I don’t know what it says about me that I love reading about rather macabre things, and that serial killers and other horrifying monstrously human things fascinates me, but it’s what does it! 😂 I also enjoy historical events that have a mysterious (and yes, sometimes killer) twist, but I’ve also enjoyed the few memoirs I’ve read. I haven’t picked up as many as I always plan to, but I have quite a few on my TBR waiting for their moment in the sun, lol.
I think the only type of non-fiction that I have never really gotten into is self-help and especially, the business, economic and political non-fiction that just always seems so dense and unappealing.
What are some of your favourite NF books?
Again, I haven’t read that many non-fiction so I don’t have a whole bunch to choose from but here are some of my favourites off the top of my head (in no particular order):

Do you have tips for those who want to get into reading more non-fiction?
I don’t think I’m the right person to ask because, as I mentioned, although I try to read more NF every year, I often don’t succeed. Honestly, I consider reading one non-fiction per year a win for me! 🤣 So really, I would love to hear what advice you’d give to someone like me, haha.
That said, something that has made reading non-fiction so more enjoyable for me is audiobooks. 90% of the non-fic that I’ve read has been through immersive reading and having the (e)book in front of me while listening to it being narrated has done wonders to help me focus on the content ,but also feel more engaged in the read! *Chefs kiss* would 10/10 recommend!
Another thing that might help is finding a book about a topic that you have an interest in or a person you’d love to know more about. These have helped me focus my interest and range of NF books to look out for!

Do you read non-fiction? I’d love to know your favourite category and also, what books you’d recommend others to try! Give me the tea, please! 🤭

I read more nonfiction when I shelved at a library, so I’d see random stuff on the new shelf in the nonfiction section and just check it out. In general, I’m not sure I even know what gets published in nonfiction!

Also love true crime, but especially the medical too. When my grandmother dies, I read one called « you’ll leave this world with your butt sewn shut »; a collection of reality of dying/the process of embalming and etc. I have so many of these I wanna read!

Pairing nonfiction with fiction might encourage you, for example you just read and loved The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, so you could look for nonfiction that focuses on the same topic to broaden your understanding.
You might also find the motivation of a challenge (like my Nonfiction Reader Challenge) helpful.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

I am not a big non-fiction reader, but I have read a lot of science books in my time. In recent years, I think the only non-fiction I read were memoirs.

i’m super picky with nonfiction because I don’t read it that often, but I feel like I’m gravitating more towards history

Aha Sorry I’m Late I didn’t want to come is such a great title! I’ve been wanting to read Trevor Noah’s book for a while but I don’t pick up Nonfiction that often either. I want to more but it’s not where I typically gravitate. & I’m with you on self-help not a category of NF that I’ve ever been interested in, I had to read some for classes in uni and I found them predatory tbh. I’m sure there are good ones but I’m turned off from the genre in general. I think immersive reading is a great idea for reading outside of my comfort zone so I love that it helsp you for nonfic! I should try that 🙂
