This week’s topic is:

Suggested by: Davida Chazan @ The Chocolate Lady’s Book Review Blog
Prompts: Do you like to use quotes from books in your book reviews? If so, do you prefer to keep them to a minimum or do you include as many as you can? Do you like to make posts with excerpts or extracts from novels? Do you think that quotes and excerpts/extracts make readers more or less interested in reading the book? Why or why not?

Do you like to use quotes from books in your reviews? If so, do you prefer to keep them to a minimum or do you include as many as you can?

I actually don’t do this a lot anymore. When I first started reviewing books on my blog and on Goodreads, I used to include at least 1-2 quotes to share my favourite moments. However, I’ve never really been good at keeping track of quotes (not even on Kindle) and a lot of the time I forget to highlight passages that stand out because I’m too excited to keep reading!

That said, the only time that I consistently share quotes is for the blog tour posts I participate in, as it’s usually the only “creative” option that’s easiest and doesn’t require ample prep time to include. In this case, I usually add at least 3-5 quotes, but it can be more depending on how quotable I find the book and how much I end up loving it! 🤭

Do you like to make posts with excerpts or extracts from novels?

The only times I’ve shared a long excerpt/extract from a novel are when I’ve participated in book promotion tours or blog tours. Although it doesn’t apply to the current blog tours that I participate in, previous blog tour companies used to provide the option of sharing an excerpt if you chose to not write a review. If it counts, I guess another instance where I’ve shared a very short snippet from a novel can be the First Lines Friday meme, where I tend to share more than just the first line, but a few lines instead!

I’ve never thought of actually doing this myself, and I don’t think that I would really choose to share a long excerpt/extract from a novel if it wasn’t for a tour or some other promotional content.

Do you think quotes and excerpts/extracts make readers more or less interested in reading the book? Why or why not?

Despite my not always using them, I like it when others use quotes in their reviews. While I may not read all the quotes, I do read some of them, and if one or two gain my interest, it usually entices me to either bump up the book on my list (if it’s already on my TBR), or I’ll want to add it to my wishlist or TBR radar! So, I do think that quotes and excerpts can make readers more interested, but it’s also a very personal preference. Some people have a preference for not knowing anything about a book before diving into it, but others may like the glimpse they get of the writing, tone, and/or characters, as it gives them some idea of what to expect.

  1. Great post, I think seeing others put quotes on their reviews led me to start doing so and now I really like to try and include one at the start as I think they can give you a good sense of the writing style. Sometimes if I’ve really loved a book – or it’s writing really stood out strongly – I end up including one at the end too. Occasionally I put one or two more in but that’s rare.

I’ve never tried a blog tour but I agree that I’d only really include an except as one of those too or as something very similar. I kind of imagine you may need permission to share a bigger chunk 🤔 although they do work as reading one earlier this year pushed a book straight onto my TBR.

Like you I’m not always great at remembering to jot them down. Sometimes I see one and think ‘I’ll remember roughly where it is’ then I end up being wrong 🙈 generally I try to jot down page numbers on my phone whilst reading. I forgot to do so with The Tainted Cup though so I need to go back and find one so that I can get on and share my review 😅

I think besides remembering to jot them down the other tricky thing can be sometimes finding ones that don’t spoil anything. I’ve had the occasional quote I’ve longed to share but looked at and realised it gave too much away.

  2. This is an interesting topic – quotes being present/absent in a review don’t really impact if I want to pick up the book or not so I guess it’s not something I notice a lot. However I have seen some Goodreads reviews which just list quotes in a quote list and I do usually only skim through them. I think it’s nice when if there’s a paragraph about the romance in a story, a romantic quote is included after it (not limited to romance of course) and I did try to do this at one point but I am just not very good at keeping track of quotes and highlighting them for reviews haha
I dislike when there’s too many quotes though they’re sometimes SPOILERS

  3. I love quotes in reviews and I’m terrible at adding them myself. I used to do this all the time, until ARC’s became my sole review posts on my blog. I always feel like I’m going to get in trouble with the warnings in the front of an e-arc. lol I have added books because of a quote, so maybe I should add them more often!

  4. Oh, forgetting to actually write the quotes down is SO true!! Absolutely guilty of that one lmao. Also super interesting that your old blog tour companies used to provide the choice of using an extract, I don’t think I’ve actually come across that one before! Love the post 💚
