This week’s topic is:

Prompts: Do you have multiple copies of any books? What makes you want to get more than one copy of a certain book? What books do you have multiple copies of? Are there any books that you want to get more copies of in the future?

Do you have multiple copies of any books?

Well, as much as I want to claim innocence with this question, I’m 100% guilty of owning multiple copies of several books. Yes, I’m a total slave to the capitalism machine when it comes to buying books—and really anything bookish—and there’s no point in denying that it has me in a chokehold, lol. 🐼

What makes you want to get more than one copy of a certain book?

There are different reasons why, and admittedly, some reasons make more sense in my head than when spoken out loud. Let’s just say that I’m very good at justifying purchases, especially when it comes to 99p deals, new covers, different formats, special editions… You get the idea, right? 😂 It honestly doesn’t take a lot to convince me to “just add it” to my shelves whether it’s physical, digital or even audio.

My top reason is, of course, that the book is a favourite and I want all the copies of it. These are usually the “can’t-live-can’t-breathe” without them favourites that I want to experience in every format that it exists in. Do I really need to give more of a reason than that? 🤭

Now, for this other reason, I know that it will make little sense to a lot of people and sometimes, I wonder at myself too, lol. Basically, if I’ve had a book sitting on my TBR for ages, I’ll sometimes buy it in a different format to try and entice myself to pick it up sooner. For example, if I’ve had a book sat on my physical shelf for several years, I’ll sometimes get the audiobook (especially if it’s part of a deal or on sale), and I’ll justify with something as simple as “maybe having the audio will make reading the physical more fun, so I should buy it and try it soon!” Does it work? Occasionally, although not as much as my brain would like it to. I know it’s a really weird buying habit and maybe even a little embarrassing to admit but it do be like that sometimes!

What books do you have multiple copies of?

The answer to the previous question should probably give you a good indication that I have multiple copies of multiple books. However, I think the ones that I have the most copies of—meaning at least one physical copy, digital and audiobook—include The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee (naturally), The Poppy War Trilogy by R.F. Kuang, the Shades of Magic trilogy, Vicious duology, and The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue, all by V.E. Schwab, The Brown Sisters by Talia Hibbert, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid… Really, the list can go on!

Are there any books you want to get more copies of in the future?

The only one that comes immediately to mind is more of The Green Bone Saga, please! 🤣 The series is coming out with new editions in the fall and I really wish that I could get my hands on them but unfortunately for me (though very fortunate for my bank), Orbit doesn’t do international shipping and I’m not seeing any indication that they’ll bring it abroad beyond UK/Europe, if that. I’ve got my fingers crossed though! 🤞🏽 Another series is Dungeon Crawler Carl. I’ve been reading the digital copies on KU but I already own the audios. However, I want to slowly buy the ebooks and the hard covers for my shelves cos this series is fast becoming one of my all-time favourites! I hope there’ll be a special edition for this too, hehe. 🤭

Are you a slave to the machine that is capitalism, too? Lol. Do you have multiple copies of any books—and if so, which books are they?

  1. I can’t say I buy multiple copies, but I do get E versions of I’ve bought the hard copy of a book.
These days I refuse to spend over £10 for an e book if the hardback or paperback is pretty much the same price. I’ll then await the 99p offer

  2. I was gonna say I’ve never considered buying audiobooks too, then remembered I have The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater in paperback and also audiobook 😅😅 It’s such a good idea though, having an audiobook version to try and entice you into reading the physical – I totally see the logic!

Also you’re so right with 99p books, I don’t seem to be able to stop myself when it’s such a bargain 😮💚

    • Glad to know that it makes sense to someone else and it’s not just in my head! 🤣 And it sounds like I don’t want to be reading the book but I do want to read it, there are just so many other books I also want to read at the same time, haha. Now that I’m in my audiobook era, I feel like this works out better for me since I can now start listening to more of those audiobooks that I previously bought, lol. 99p book deals are so hard to resist!

  3. The older I get, the less I like having multiple copies. I have even sold a couple of my second copies recently. I do still have multiple copies of Beach Read by Emily Henry, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston.

    • Fair enough! A lot of my multiple copies are of ebooks and audiobooks which sometimes helps me “forget” that these multiple copies exist until I search them out. I’m still building out my own personal library though for that one day when I finally have my own library room in my house 🙂

  4. So far i’ve never fallen into that… sure, it slightly piss me off to see prettier covers of a book I own 🙈 But I still can’t see myself justifying buying multiple. The only reason would be if I’d buy it in french- so one original & one translated.

    • OH, it can be so frustrating sometimes when books come out with new prettier covers! It’s so hard to resist, especially if it happens with books that happen to be my all-time favourites. I think that’s a pretty great reason to have multiple copies! I would definitely do that if I were fluent enough in another language, lol.

  5. I think you said it all. Yes, I have multiple copies from several books. Sometimes, I buy the second one because of the pretty cover. Sometimes, I buy a book that I own already but haven’t read, yet, because I’m unaware of it.
And I own several ones in more than one language, especially if I only own the German one from before I started having the opportunity to get the English originals.

  6. This post had me nodding along so much! 😅 I definitely relate to the “capitalism chokehold” part—book deals, stunning new covers, exclusive editions… it’s a slippery slope, and I’m sliding happily down it! 😂 I love how you described buying a different format just to trick your brain into finally reading a long-neglected TBR book—I’ve done the exact same thing, especially with audiobooks. It’s oddly comforting to know I’m not the only one with that logic!

Also, your list of multi-copy books is top-tier. The Green Bone Saga and The Poppy War trilogy are 100% worth collecting in every form. I’m really hoping those new Green Bone editions make it overseas too—fingers crossed for us both! 🤞🏽

Loved this post, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for a special edition 👀📚

  7. I can totally understand getting an audio or an ebook of a book that you already own so that you might read it quicker. Sometimes a different format can really help.

  8. I don’t think I have multiple copies of any books, just because I don’t have the space for it. But I’ve come close to buy multiple copies of Jane Austen books (Pride, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey) just because their covers and editions are always so pretty!
