Let’s Talk Bookish: Reading Beyond Books

Sorry my post is going up pretty late! With how hectic this week’s schedule has been I totally forgot it was Friday and so I forgot to schedule my post in advance… 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope everything I say in this post makes sense and sorry for the brevity too—my brain is too tired to think at the moment, lol.

✨ Welcome back to another week of LTB! ✨

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and co-hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits and myself! In this discussion meme, participants get to talk about certain topics, share opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts! Learn more about LTB, past topics and future topics HERE.

This week’s topic is:

Prompts: What do you read other than books? Do you like non-novel forms of literature, like poetry and plays? Do you read a lot of news articles, op-eds, or essays? Do novels make up most of your reading, or is it a mix of those other kinds of writing? Do you ever listen to podcasts in place of audiobooks?

What do you read other than books? Do you like non-novel forms of literature, like poetry and plays?

I do read more than just books and I do enjoy poetry although I have never really got into reading plays. I guess the poetry I read is also more of the “confessional”/”performance” poetry a la Lang Leav, Rupi Kaur, Atticus Poetry, and Courtney Peppernell—or as I’m learning it’s called “instapoetry” for its popularity on social media. 🥴 I used to be a lot more into it five years ago compared to now, but I still do enjoy a few poems here and there. I do want to read more poetry though; in particular, I want to explore the works of Mary Oliver and I have a copy of Devotions already on my TBR, as I’ve heard great things about it. I do tend to struggle a bit with poetry sometimes because I feel like collections are 85% miss and 15% that strike a chord so strong I know I’ll cary the words with me for a long time—and of course, I always want it to hit that way! 😂

Other non-book reading that I really enjoy are web comics, specifically Webtoons! There are so many amazing artist authors out there and I’m in awe of the worlds and characters that they bring to life. People are truly so talented! 😍

Do you read a lot of news articles, op-eds, or essays?

Since I fell off the social media grid several years ago, I’ve kept my distance from reading news articles too often because it would just send me into a spiral of anxiety and depression. I’ve been more engaged with news articles in the past two years at least and I know it’s a privilege to switch off whenever I don’t want to deal with everything that’s happening, but it’s for my peace of mind! With my work at the moment, I have been reading more news articles and op-eds especially as current events has such a massive impact on it.

I work at an innovation lab and so I probably should be reading more articles about the latest trends and happenings related to my work, but honestly? I find it so hard to juggle reading articles for work in between the other tasks I have on my plate, and frankly, to motivate myself to read not “for fun”. 🤭

Do novels make up most of your reading, or is it a mix of those other kinds of writing?

Unquestionably, yes. Novels still make up the majority of my reading because, for me, reading falls under the “fun downtime activity” category, and I prefer to do that most with novels. While I mix in the other forms of reading I previously mentioned—and mostly web comics at that—I don’t gravitate towards them often and wouldn’t necessarily choose to pick them up first in my time to relax.

Do you ever listen to podcasts in place of audiobooks?

I do enjoy podcasts, although I don’t listen to many. I do find that they’re fun to listen to while I’m gaming or doing things like tidying up my book stacks and cleaning out my closets. I think my favourite podcasts at the moment are Fated Mates for all kinds of romance talk with author Sarah MacLean & Jennifer Prokop, and A Bit Fruity with Matt Bernstein for deep dives into pop culture, current events, etc. They are both so entertaining and never fail to engage me and I would highly recommend them—especially the former if you’re a big romance reader! 😍

  1. Ooh I forgot all about Webtoons. I used to read loads of them back in the day! I remember reading Lore Olympus as it came out right from episode one! I might have to go and see what’s on there now…

I am the same with news articles, for the most part. I don’t read anything about current events outside of my field of work (conservation/climate change) which, lets be honest, is often depressing enough and doesn’t leave me with the capacity for anything else.

  2. I’m not a big poem reader at all but I feel like the term “instapoetry” sounds condescending and not very nice 😟. I hope you enjoy Mary Oliver, I’ve heard great things about her books.
I’d love some Webtoon recs from you if you wanna share any of your favs 🖤!
I’ve listened to A Bit Fruity a bit and I enjoyed it but I have not heard of Fated Mates.

  3. I’ve never heard the term “Instapoetry,” but it does make sense. I’m also a little ashamed that I totally forgot about WebToons when writing my own post. xD A Bit Fruity with Matt Bernstein sounds like a super fun podcast, and I’ll have to give it a try!

  4. I occasionally listen to podcasts, not very often. I read articles online from local news and occasionally world news, but it can be depressing. I read or listen to books, some of them are poetry books. I read lots of picture books to my grandchildren.

  5. Completely understand avoiding the news – since the pandemic, I’ve had all the news apps on my phone switched off for exactly the same reason. It’s so easy to fall into anxious/depressive spirals, and we can only function as humans when we’re taking care of ourselves! I like to remind myself that back in the day, you only got news from the paper or through word of mouth – people weren’t bombarded from all sides with what’s going on in the world. This idea that everyone has to be well informed, else they’re failing morally is, to be quite honest, ridiculous!

Now I’ve had my little rant, I love the diversity of your reading – I think I should go check out some more podcasts, and Fated Mates sounds like it’s up my alley! Love the post as always 💚
