Let’s Talk Bookish: Traveling for Literature

✨ Welcome back to another week of LTB! ✨

Sorry for getting my post up late—coincidentally, I was traveling today and of course, in typical panda fashion, I didn’t end up scheduling this post in advance. 🫣

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and co-hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits and myself! In this discussion meme, participants get to talk about certain topics, share opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts! Learn more about LTB, past topics and future topics HERE.

This week’s topic is:

Prompts: Many books are inspired by real-life settings. Have you ever visited places inspired by books you’ve read? What places are on your bucketlist? If you could visit any fictional setting come to life, where would you go?

Have you ever visited places inspired by books you’ve read? What places are on your bucketlist?

I don’t think I’ve intentionally set out to visit places that were inspired by the books I’ve read, but there are places that I’ve been to that have been mentioned in books I end up reading. Does that count? 🤭

  • Bath, England: Persuasion, one of my favourite books, made me want to visit the town of Bath so much when I was living in England, and I’m so glad that I got the chance to. We went during the winter and the snow on the cobblestones and being surrounded by the historic architecture was so magical. Not to mention The Jane Austen Center! I loved every moment of it! 😍 This is the only place that I can currently think of that I visited from reading a book… Lol
  • Norwich, England: I went to uni in Norwich and I was so surprised when one of my favourite reads of the past year (The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches) ended up being set around there! I could easily picture some of the earlier scenes when Mika Moon was walking around the city, especially around the Castle area cos I used to pass by there almost every day when I went down town.
  • Bali, Indonesia: Well, it kind of goes without saying, right? Since I’m (originally) from here and lived here for several years as an adult. The book Eat, Pray, Love was probably one of the most popular non-Indonesian books set in Bali, and I have to admit that I hate that book and how it paints a very foreign centric picture of the island, I will say that all the travel boxes were ticked for me.

But there are still so many places that are still on my bucket list that I would love to visit and I hope to one day… Alaska, the Peak District, Belfast, South Korea, Portland, New Zealand, and so many other places that my brain just cannot remember at this minute…

If you could visit any fictional setting come to life, where would you go?

To be honest, if I stepped foot in like 90% of the fantasy settings that I read about, it would likely take less than 5 seconds for me to die, because they’re pretty dangerous/treacherous worlds/locations. 😂 That said, I think I would still love to take my chances with visiting a few at least—maybe the tamer ones—if they ever became reality!

  • The Galactic Commons: There would be so much to see across the galaxy, omg!
  • The Library in Hell: I mean, a library of unwritten books by unwritten authors? I could possibly (probably, maybe) even forget that it’s in hell, lol.
  • Rosemond Street: Okay, so maybe the majority of this world would be too dangerous for me to survive, but this street with the shopkeepers from this story? I’d absolutely love to visit!
  • Red London: I wouldn’t even dream of setting foot in White London but I would love to visit Kell’s home! 😍
  • Hrafnsvik/The Otherlands: More “5-seconds and you’re dead” locations but I think I’d enjoy the few seconds glimpse that I’d get of both places, lol.

  1. Last year before my Alaskan cruise, I made it a point to read at least one book set in Alaska. The book I read, Cold Storage, Alaska by John Straley. was the perfect read because it was set in a small Alaskan town on a random island. It also worked out that the author lived in one of the places we stopped on our trip. I even picked up the other book in the series while I was there.

  2. You went to uni in Norwich too?? Small world! I should read The Very Secret Society, it’d be nice to read something set in the place I live!
