#WWWWednesday: 14 May 2025

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last week, I’ve finished 5 books. Save for one disappointment, it was a really great (and eclectic) reading week and I found a new graphic novel to add to my all-time favourites! 🥹

Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi ★★★★☆
This was such a great debut historical fantasy that leans heavy into the historical aspect. I learned a lot about West African/Yoruba culture and I thought Òdòdó was a fantastic morally grey MC. I loved rooting for her!

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee ★★½
Another Owlcrate readalong book with Leslie, Julie and Ali that turned out to be a bit of a letdown. The ending of this made me pretty mad because it felt like a slap to the face to the reader! Despite being sucked into the story from the beginning, that ending pretty much ruined the book for all four of us.

The Thief of Farrowfell (The Thief of Farrowfell #1) by Ravena Guron ★★★★☆
This was a fun, fast-paced, action-packed MG fantasy. It ended up being darker than I expected but I kind of appreciated that! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Check out my full thoughts!

The Taming of Jessi Rose by Beverly Jenkins ★★★★☆
As always, I had a great time with Jenkins’ historical romance. I think this one went a little heavier on the history lessons thanks to Joth’s role in the story, but I loved it. I learn so much every time I pick up one of her romances! I loved how much of a fighter Jessi is and I loved how Griffin soothed her edges and made her feel safe enough to open up again. Their romance? Holy swoons, batman! 🔥 Sweet, sensual, and amazing!

Blades of Furry: Volume 1 by Emily Erdos & Deya Muniz ★★★★★
Friends, I’m not even exaggerating when I say this is one of my favourite reads this year and this graphic novel has easily slotted itself into my all-time favourites list quite nicely. I’M OBSESSED! My review goes up tomorrow but my gosh, I’m so glad this webcomic came on my radar thanks to the blog tour! I loved it so much!!! 😭

Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland ⇢ 30% ⇢ My first non-fiction read of 2025 and it’s a true crime about The Troubles. To say it’s heavy would be an understatement. This book really proves humanity’s capacity for violence and untold cruelty. I think what has got to me most so far is how violent deeds are spoken about in such a normalized and detached way. It’s rather jarring! Needless to say, I’m learning a lot.

I should probably get onto the overdue ARCs that I’ve got on my list but I’m gonna be real—it’s really where the mood takes me so let’s see where we go!

What are you currently reading? I hope you’re enjoying whatever book you’ve picked up, friends!

    • I’ve been hearing people say the same about Time Loops and Meet Cutes but I’m glad to hear that you still enjoyed it 🙂 I hope you continue enjoying the JD Robb series. Happy reading and have a great rest of your week!

    • I feel like discovering that I can actually retain information from audiobooks while working out has really changed the game for me! It has surprisingly helped me keep the reading momentum going and for the first time this year I feel like I’m actually doing a “decent amount” of reading because so far, I have been feeling much the same way as you—too busy to read or just slumpy! 🫣 I hope you manage to shake it off! Maybe a switch up in genre or reading format?

    • It was a great reading week 🙂 A Lesson in Vengeance was great until that ending… It just felt like the author missed the mark and I didn’t understand what she meant to do because it honestly made me question what the point of the book even was. I can remember it being very well loved by many as well, so I’m bummed that it didn’t work for me. I hope you enjoy it if you plan to pick it up?

  2. That’s a great reading week although it’s such a shame that you all felt let down by the ending of Lessons in Vengeance
I can imagine that the book about the troubles in Ireland would be a really heavy read. It was such a shocking time.
I loved Frank and Red so hope you enjoy that when you pick it up

    • Yeah, I think we were all expecting more of a bang and it was barely a fizzle! 🤭 I knew very little about the troubles prior to reading this but now I’m finding out just how little I knew. It’s very well written too! I’ve not heard a lot of people talk about Frank and Red, but the ones who’ve read it all seemed to love it so I’m keen to pick it up!

  3. It looks like you’ve had a great reading week on the whole besides that one disappointed. Leslie told me that one didn’t go well and it’s so frustrating when the end ruins everything. I really want to read Masquerade sometime especially given how the culture is worked in and the morally gray character 😍 how wonderful that you found such a hit graphic novel wise too 🥰 discovering new favourites is such a lovely feeling. Especially if it’s within a series and you know there’s more to come (I’m basing that on books and shows in general as I still haven’t tried graphic novels 😂)

Your current read definitely sounds like a heavy one.

And it looks like you have some fantastic books on the horizon. Fable For The End Of The World & One Dark Window are both books I’m desperate to get to 😍

I hope you have a wonderful week.

    • Yeah, it was such a bummer! I think all of us in the reading group were expecting there to be something big because the build up really felt like it was leading somewhere good. But nope… Nope, we weren’t headed anywhere, haha! 🤣 It was so disappointing. I would definitely recommend Masquerade although it’s less on the fantasy side, I found the history and culture aspect very interesting. I hope you enjoy it if you give it a go 🙂

And yeah, reading about the troubles wouldn’t be called light-reading but I’m learning so much and it’s so interesting. This is the kind of non-fiction that I love (don’t know what that says about me, haha) and it’s very well written, too.

I hope you enjoy Fable for the End and One Dark Window too whenever you get to them, Charlotte! Happy reading and hope you’ve had a great week/weekend. 💜

      • Aww that’s so frustrating. It’s devastating when a book has wonderful build up that seems to lead up to nothing in the end. It makes rating them hard I find as the ending is a pretty vital part of a book. Although I love fantasy immensely I think that balance could still work for me. I read a Greek myth retelling that went down a historical rather than fantastical route and found it fascinating after all.

I haven’t tried non fiction yet but if it helps with your fears taste wise, two of my three options to start from are about murderers 🙈

Thank you so much 🥰 I’ll let you know how I find both. And I hope you’ve been having a wonderful month.

    • Yeah, I barely knew anything about this period but I’m learning a lot. This is the kind of non-fiction that reels me in! I’m still hoping that at least one or two of the books we have left will be hits… But at least I’m unhauling quite a bit after this to make room for new books, haha!

  4. You had a great reading and listening week, Dini. Isn’t it great when a book that is unassuming and not one you hear a lot about, becomes a favourite? I hope you get to Frank and Red soon and love it as much as I did.

  5. Ooof 2.5* for Lessons in Vengeance… might have to give that one a pass lol. So happy you enjoyed Masquerade though, completely agree that it was more historical than fantasy, but I still found it a really captivating read.
