The Quarter Year Crisis Book Tag: April 2025

It’s already that time of the year again where we recap our Q1 reading with The Quarter Year Crisis Book Tag. It’s hard to believe that Q1 is already over and we’re a quarter of the way through 2025. It truly feels like 2025 has just begun but then I also remember that I’ve already taken my first trip out of the country this year and my mind is even more boggled trying to calculate the passing of time and events, lol.

But I digress! Let’s see what my Q1 reading was like, shall we? Also, if you’re curious, you can view my past quarterly check-ins: 2024, 2023, 2022.

This tag was originally created by Roisin @Roisin’s Reading and you can view it on BookTube.

How many books have you read so far?

So… This year I’m keeping track of my reads in way too many places, and I’m not doing a good job of it—not even on Goodreads! The tracker that is the most updated is my Notion, as that’s also where I write down my thoughts while reading, so these stats are taken from here.

According to this tracker, I’ve read 47/150 books so far this year! That means I’m technically on track with my 2025 reading challenge.

Have you already found a book you think might be a 2025 favourite? If not, what was your favourite book you read that wasn’t quite five stars?

I’ve been lucky to find several that I already know will be in my 2025 favourites list. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers was the most recent addition to that list though!

Check out my full thoughts!

Any 1-star books / least favourite book of the year?

I thankfully haven’t had a 1-star read this year but Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte is my lowest rated book so far this year! There was so much potential but it didn’t materialize.

Most read genre so far?

I’ve barely used my Storygraph in 2025 despite wanting to start off strong! Fortunately, I have Kal’s spreadsheet which creates charts based on my reading inputs as well! I haven’t updated this in about a week so it’s a bit outdated; however, there are no surprises here with Romance (41.7%) & Fantasy (36.1%) being my most read genres! I don’t know why this image says “subgenre” but it should be genre!

A book that surprised you?

Although I’d heard great things about the book, I knew very little about The Sword of Kaigen before I picked it up. All I knew was that the majority of readers loved it and thought it was an incredible debut. I was surprised by how much I loved it and how it impacted me emotionally. Like, it absolutely wrecked me in the best way and I gushed about it a lot in my review, if you want to check it out!

A book that’s come out in 2025 already that you want to read but haven’t yet?

Oh, there are several of these that I’m a bit behind on reading but I hope I can get to soon! All except the first one are YA contemporaries!

One goal you made that you’re succeeding at

One of my goals this year (as it is with every year actually) is to read more of my backlist and I think I’m doing a decent job of it so far this year. I’m particularly glad that I’ve already read some of the books that were high up on my priority list and I hope that I can continue that progress as the year goes on 🙂

One goal you made that you need to focus on

Well, to be honest, I can probably improve on all of the goals I’ve set for myself this year. 😂 While I’m not massively “falling behind” on goals, I don’t think I’m doing incredibly at any of them either. I hope that I can pick up the momentum when it comes to the reading challenges that I’m participating in. I know I can catch up in whatever month I want as they’re not restricting challenges, but yeah, I want to read more books that fulfill challenge prompts!

New to you Bloggers/Booktubers/ Bookstagrammers/Booktokers for 2025 you recommend?

Thanks to co-hosting LTB I’ve managed to find some great new bloggers who I’ve really enjoyed following from the start of this year. Of course, I’ve also discovered bloggers through other methods, but these are the ones I’ve engaged more with this year, and I enjoy their content a lot! This isn’t a full list but they are the ones that have popped up in my head almost immediately.

I’m not tagging anyone but if you’d like to do this, feel free to link back so I can see your answers!

And that’s a wrap on my first quarter of reading in 2025! I haven’t had the most amazing reading year so far this year but I hope that it picks up as the months go on. I still can’t believe we’re a quarter of the way through a new year already! How was your first quarter of reading?

  1. I think you’re doing great so far! I love seeing Sword of Kaigen on your list!! Also, the Becky Chambers. Your favorite and least are both buddy reads. haha. I hope the rest of your year goes well. Good luck on reading more books that hit your challenge prompts!! ❤

    • I’m happy that I haven’t read too many awful books but I’m sad that one of our buddy reads was my least favourite. That was just… A not great book and I’m not sorry to say it 🤭 I’m glad that the rest of our buddy reads have been enjoyable and amazing! Thanks, Leslie 💜 I need to get some of that slay energy from you for these challenges, haha

  2. I think 47 books already is incredible, well done!! My reading so far this year hasn’t been great. Quality wise it’s been pretty good which is what matters most to be fair but I really want to start reading more 😂 I’m also impressed that you’ve stuck with your backlist goals as I haven’t at all. I’ve read two, one of which was a reread 🙈 and I haven’t even checked how I’m doing with my challenges. Next month I’m determined to start getting everything back on track 😅

Im glad the Becky Chambers one was such a hit, I hope you love the rest of the series too. And I get your fears for Sword Of Kaigan as I’m still slightly worried about trying it. I definitely plan to though as so many people love it and it sounds so good. I also really want to try The Buffalo Hunter Hunter as well.

Thanks so much for thinking of me 🥰 I’ve loved following your page, reading your posts and chatting too ❤️

I hope the rest of the year goes even better for you 🥰

    • I know 47 is still really good and I need to stop comparing to my previous years because my head space was in such a different place! Quality over quantity really is the thing and I think that’s probably why I’m also not feeling too despondent about not reading more than I thought I would’ve by now, even if I do want to read more, lol. 😂 I’m kind of surprised that I’ve stuck to the backlist as well but these books are really staring me hard in the face this year and so I’m trying my best to make at least a slightly bigger dent to the pile (also so I can finally unhaul some books because I seriously need more space)!

I hope you end up loving Sword of Kaigen! AND I hope you love Buffalo Hunter Hunter when you try it. It sounds so totally out of my comfort zone but something about the synopsis immediately hooked me and I knew I had to give it a try at least! I can’t wait to get a copy 🙂

I’m happy that I discovered your blog (and IG!) this year! It’s been fun chatting and reading your posts as well 💜 I hope the rest of your year is amazing too, Charlotte!

      • I think sometimes it’s hard not wanting to read more between massive TBRs and seeing how much other readers get to. Especially when you feel like you’re having a slower year than usual (like I am). That sounds like a wise plan and having more space for books is always wonderful. I hope you enjoy the rest of your backlist books though too 🥰

Thank you 🥰 I hope you enjoy the Buffalo one whenever you get to it too. It’s not truly outside of my comfort zone as I have a thing for vampire books 😂 but horror in general can be so it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out for us both.

Thank you 🥰 yes it’s been wonderful. I look forward to reading more from you and seeing more on IG as well. ❤️❤️

  3. Quarter Year Crisis indeed! I can’t believe it will be May, which is my kids last month of school – wow – really where has the time gone? I tried out Storygraph at the beginning of the year but I am so bad at logging in and updating what I’ve read etc…anyway looks like you are doing well!

    • Yeah, I don’t know where time has gone but it has run away from me! 🤣 As much as I enjoy certain features on Storygraph, Goodreads is still
my go-to and so convenient. I think I might leave off Storygraph for now or at least a while. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have deleted and “re-uploaded” my library on there because I can’t be bothered manually adding one-by-one the books I’ve read since I last updated! 🫣 I think I’m just going to stop now, lol

  4. Ah this looks like fun. I honestly need to remember this for next year (because I don’t have room for it right now and by the time I do we are already almost midway through haha)

    • Fair enough! Lol, I always forget until someone posts it and then I see a whole barrage of these posts and I’m like “‘kay, now’s the time to do it!” 😂 I think if no one else posted, I’d probably forget cos the quarter always sneaks up on me, lol.

  5. Ahh this is a great post! I have seen The Buffalo Hunter around a lot! I am curious to see your thoughts if you read it. And thank you so much for including me in blog recommendations! This made my day! I always enjoy discovering new fellow book lovers and bloggers, so thank you for always doing this ❤

    • I need to update my Goodreads Challenge because I’m missing so many books that I haven’t logged on there because I haven’t written reviews for them (and for some reason, I hate logging books without reviews on GR)! 🤭 I’m glad to at least be on track!

    • That is incredible, Pam! I think at this rate I’ll be lucky to achieve my goal by the end of the year, but who knows—maybe the latter half of 2025 will see me reading much more and in the way I want to be reading! 😍 I hope you enjoy all the reads you pick up for the rest of the year!

  6. Love this, Dini! Sword of Kaigen was absolutely a surprise, mainly cause I’m always wary of books that are so hyped. Our buddy reads have been helping me slowly get through some of my backlist which is always a massive help lol, and I hope you love Buffalo Hunter Hunter when you get to it 🙂

    Like

    • Yeah, hyped books are scary 😂 And it can definitely be hit or miss or just okay but I’m glad we read that one together (and finally read it to take it off the backlist, too)! I’m always down for more buddy reads for the backlist books whenever you want. I know we got quite a few unread books in common, haha.

  7. Ugh Misaki, my girl! Love that you loved Kaigen!

I’ve always been curious about Stephen Graham Jones’s books, but I honestly don’t now if I could cope with them haha.

Thank you for the mention! I’ve loved engaging with you too!

    • UGH, I know! Misaki was an incredible character and definitely a stand out for me this year. I loved her! 🥹 I’m also not sure if I can cope with the horror—I’m way too much of a chicken most of the time but there’s something about this synopsis that immediately hooked me and doesn’t seem to want to let me go. I’m taking it at a sign that I need to at least give this SGJ book a try! 😂
