Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?

Since last week, I’ve finished 1 book. Yay for another 5-star read though! 🥳

The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang
★★★★★
I’m so glad I buddy read this Becky because I couldn’t stop commenting about the read as I was experiencing it. This one… took me by surprise. I don’t think I was expecting to really love it as much as I did but I have a huge appreciation for well-developed character-driven narratives and this was top-tier for me. I agree with Becky that the plot wasn’t strong and the world-building was pretty info-dumpy, and although the “main story” (of what little there was) wrapped up, there were inklings of another storyline introduced at the end that went nowhere. I’m unsure what the point of that was and it made this feel like it could’ve been a series but instead, we got a standalone. I’m not too fussed about it since I really enjoyed the character journeys but I can see why it would be frustrating to some! Overall, this was so good and I’m so glad that I finally read it 😍

Vespertine ⇢ 39%
This is the first book in the Owlcrate group read that I’m thoroughly enjoying! I love Rogerson’s writing and how witty and sarcastic her characters can be. Artemesia is so relatable in her grumpiness, but surprisingly, the revenant is the one stealing the show for me. This character’s voice is immensely entertaining! I’m hoping to finish this by tomorrow because I don’t plan to bring any physical books with me to Japan.

A Whisper of Death ⇢ 52%
I picked this up on a whim as I was getting my nails done on Sunday and I’ve been alternating this with Vespertine. This has ended up being my commute read although it’s a bit slow-going as my brain is feeling like absolute mush right now! It’s not bad but also, a little too wordy and repetitive. Still enjoying it though and I’m keen to figure out whodunit!

I have no idea what I’ll be reading next but it’ll be a Kindle book as I’ll be off to Japan on Friday! It could end up being one of the ARCs I have on my list or maybe I’ll finally finish my Reign of the Talon ARC after “currently reading” it for over a month! 🫣 No better time than on an overnight flight for an insomniac to finish a book, lol.

What are you currently reading? I hope you’re enjoying whatever book you’ve picked up, friends!

Hooray for a five star read and finishing your ARC!

It’s great that you enjoyed Sword of Kaigan so much. I agree that the plot is a bit on the weak side but I’ve always loved character driven novels and this one really ticked the box for me too.

I’ve heard Sword of Kaigan was originally going to be the first book in a book series, but after finishing writing it, th author said seh felt emotionally very drained and decided to leave it as a standalone, wo that may explain why there are some lose threads. I haven’t read it yet but I can’t wait

I’m so glad we picked Kaigen for our buddy read, I think I would have just kept putting it off because of the hype otherwise. I completely agree about the character driven/exploration strength in it and absolutely loved it… even with the issues 🙂
