Prompts: Happy Valentine’s Day! What are your favourite romance tropes? What books would you recommend that have those tropes? Are there any books with those tropes on your TBR? Do you have any least favourite romance tropes?

What are your favourite romance tropes? What books would you recommend that have those tropes?

It’s kind of funny right because despite romance being my most-read genre, I wouldn’t say that I gravitate towards a particular trope. There are some I definitely enjoy more than others; however, I don’t pick romances based on tropes and I mostly read whatever sounds appealing. Is that a bit of a cop-out answer? 🤭

If I really had to choose… Well, it’s really hard to choose because I love so many tropes! Hate to love/Enemies or rivals to lovers, fake dating, marriage of convenience, opposites attract, grumpy sunshine, forced proximity, small town romance… I mean, I really could go on! I think what makes it tougher to choose is that many romances are a mix of several tropes so it’s difficult to distinguish between them. Taking a look through my read list though, it seems that the trope I’ve read the most is: hate to love/enemies or rivals to lovers, and here are some recommendations:

Are there any books with those tropes on your TBR?

With the number of books sitting unread on my TBR it’s no surprise that there are probably more on that list than my read list! 😂 Here are a few that I’m looking forward to reading:

Do you have any least favourite romances tropes?

I can give this one a clearer answer because there are definitely tropes that I tend to stay away from as past experience dictates that I don’t enjoy reading them, no matter how ‘well done’ said tropes may be. But the top spot of least favourites goes to: love triangles. I don’t think you could ever get me to like them. I run the other way! 😂

  1. Hmmm I’m more of a romantic subplot person, but I like enemies/rivals-to-lovers. I loved Roma and Juliet in These Violent Delights, Rosalind and Orion in Foul Lady Fortune, and Prudence and Quint in Instant Karma. But I found the enemies-to-lovers in Cruel Prince weird, which is one of the reasons I’m not a fan of that series.

  2. You’ve got some great books on this list! I enjoy opposites and rivals but don’t care for forced proximity because those romances dont feel as real. I think fake dating is overused but it works. I loved Delilah doesn’t care, I hope you do too!

  3. I keep meaning to read A Pho Love Story, there’s another book coming from that author this year. I really liked A Taste of Gold and Iron and would happily read other books in that world. Gods of Jade and Shadow is still my favorite Silvia Moreno-Garcia book.

  4. Yay for enemies to lovers 😂 how is it possible that it’s my favourite and I’ve read none of your recommendations though 🙈 We Hunt The Flame recently became a priority for mine given how much I loved the authors latest book and how intriguing the blurb sounded when I reread it. Divine Rivals is a 2025 must read for me too and I’m hopeful that I might finally read Pride & Prejudice too. Plenty of others that you’ve mentioned are also ones I’m eager to get to though.

I hope you enjoy the ones on your TBR whenever you get to them.

I agree that love triangles don’t always work (generally one side of it is always better developed than the other) but last year I fell head over heels for one 😍

  5. enemies to lovers is the BEST because of the banter. haha. It gets me every time. I’m so sorry. I forgot to post!! My parents came Friday morning to spend the long weekend with us and I didn’t even touch my laptop. Hence, why I’m catching up on stuff now. ❤
