Let’s Talk Bookish: First read(s) of the Year!

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits where we get to discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts! Check out January’s and all the past topics if you want to join the bookish discussion fun.

Today’s topic is actually:

But since I’ve already done the bookish part of my year-end survey where I go into all of bookish things in great detail, I thought I would go back to last week’s topic that I missed:

Prompts: What is/was your first read of 2025? Was it a deliberate selection? Or did you just pick up the nearest book? Do you typically make sure to finish all your current reads by the 31st? Do you mind if some of your reads spill over into the New Year? Are you particular about when you read certain books, or do you read whatever, whenever?

My first read of 2025 was A Language of Dragons by S. F. Williamson. This was a deliberate selection because it’s my first ARC of the year and I knew the pub date was just around the corner. I want to at least start my year off on the right foot with these ARCs! 🤣 I’m happy I picked this debut up.

That said, most of the time I do end up just picking whatever my mood tells me to and that has always worked fine as I’m very much a mood reader!

I try to finish all my reads before the year ends just so that I can start on a “clean slate” in the new year and I’ve been trying to do this for a while now. It’s not that I mind if some of my reads spill over into the new year, I just think it feels less cumbersome to have nothing in the “currently reading” section, especially if I’m not feeling the reads I’ve had going for ages.

Sadly, I wasn’t successful in completing all my ongoing reads before 2024 ended so I wound up putting them in my “on pause” list for now until I get back to them!

Are you particular about when you read certain books, or do you read whatever, whenever?

As a mood reader, yes. 🤣 I’m not a seasonal reader by any means but I think the seasons and how people feel around that time affect my mood, which in turn affects what I pick up. Depending on my mood, sometimes it doesn’t matter and I can read whatever, whenever. Most of the time, I pick up books at random to see what fits with my mood and if I find myself falling into a groove with a certain type of book (trope) or genre, I wind up sticking to those same vibes until it doesn’t hit anymore, lol. If that sounds complicated, it’s not at all. It’s just whatever my mood dictates!

What is or was your first read of 2025? Did you pick it deliberately or were you continuing a read from 2024? Do you mind if there’s “spillover” from the previous year into the current year?

  1. Your first read of the year sounds amazing! I also try to finish the books I had for 2024 but didn’t manage to, which I don’t really mind. So I ended 2024 with the same book I started 2025 with, Miss Amelia’s List.

  2. I am also a huge mood reader, or read books that I got from the library that have to go back. My planned first read was Guilty Mothers by Angela Marsons, but, I had listened to All Our Tomorrows by Catherine Bybee the last couple of days of December, so moved right on the the next in the series, The Forgotten Ones instead. I did listen to Guilty Mothers after I finished it though.

  3. Picking up an ARC on schedule does sound like an auspicious way to start a new year of reading, haha. My first read of 2025 was A Sorceress Comes to Call. I did pick it deliberately, as I wanted to read a fantasy story I was pretty sure I would love, but in the case of this particular book, it was mostly that my hold finally came in at the end of December 😛
