#FirstLinesFriday: 3 January 2025

Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:

“A white silence blanketed the land. Newly fallen snow, hushed. Pure, crystalline ice hardening against the pale bark of the trees. The chilled air that swelled with the slow, sleeping breaths of a world that had yet to wake.
And a girl cloaked in heavy furs, waiting.”

Do you recognise the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

Below (North #1) by Alexandria Warwick

Introducing the first novel in the North series. Set in a brutal, Arctic-inspired world, this is a YA fantasy series you do not want to miss! For fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas.

In the heart of the frigid North, there lives a demon known as the Face Stealer.

Eyes, nose, mouth–nothing and no one is safe. Once he returns to his lair, or wherever it is he dwells, no one ever sees those faces again.

When tragedy strikes, Apaay embarks on a perilous journey to find her sister’s face–yet becomes trapped in a labyrinth ruled by a sinister girl named Yuki. The girl offers Apaay a deal: find her sister’s face hidden within the labyrinth, and she will be set free. But the labyrinth, and those who inhabit it, is not as it seems. Especially Numiak: darkly beautiful, powerful, whose motives are not yet clear.

With time slipping, Apaay is determined to escape the deadly labyrinth with her sister’s face in hand. But in Yuki’s harsh world, Apaay will need all her strength to survive.

Yuki only plays the games she wins.

Have you read Below or is it on your TBR?

    • You’re one of two or three bloggers that I’ve seen talk about this series but you’ve all rated it highly so I’m excited to check it out, especially considering it’s about indigenous mythology that I’ve never read about before! 😍 Also, help, I had no idea the series wasn’t complete yet?!

      • It’s so good & so slept on in my opinion, but yea the author took a pause when she got a romantasy series trad published and hasn’t given a timeline for when she’ll come back to it… which is killing me lol
