#WWWWednesday: 1 January 2025

Happy New Year, everyone!!!

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

I thought I’d be reading much more considering I’m on leave (but the joke’s on me as I also thought I’d be more productive yet alas, here we are!) but I’ve been taking things slow. I’m enjoying it. Since last week I’ve finished 5 books, most of them were holiday novellas but I also read a graphic novel and a YA novel. I did also have a DNF this week.

Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales ★★★★☆
I’ve finally read my first book by Gonzales and I understand why she’s a well-loved YA contemporary author. She writes realistic characters in relatable situations and it’s heartfelt too. I loved Ollie and the cast of characters surrounding him massively grew on me by the end! I’m so happy this wasn’t a traumatic coming-out story.

One Bed for Christmas (Baldwin Village #0.5) by Jackie Lau ★★★☆☆
This was a fun holiday novella that had a super simp MMC and an oblivious FMC. Despite being super short, there is still a third-act but thankfully, these idiots didn’t idiot for too long and I loved the adorably geeky T-Rex moment at the end. 🤭

In Bed with the Stablemaster (The Rogue Files #6.5) by Sophie Jordan ★★★½
I don’t think this would be “interesting” for those who haven’t read any of the Rogue Files romances but I thought it was cute and sexy (although, the cover is very misleading with that riding crop on it). I loved sassy Vera and grumpy Rufus!

Lunar Boy by Jes & Cin Wibowo ★★★★★
Didn’t expect to encounter my favourite read of the month at the tail-end of it but that’s what happened after reading Lunar Boy! There are so many reasons to love this graphic novel but, for me, the fact that it’s chock-full of Indonesian rep alongside LGBTQIA+ rep made me so freaking proud. Not ashamed to admit that I teared up just a little reading this! 🥹

The Christmas List (Strawberry Hollow #3) by Maren Moore ★★★★☆
This was a sweet and heartwarming second-chance romance which also features the single parent trope. The chemistry between our MCs was undeniable and these three truly made the cutest little family! 🥹

I’ve put all the outstanding “currently reading” books from 2024 on pause to clear out my shelf on Goodreads so that I can start 2025 with a “clean” slate. There are a few from that list that I plan to get back to immediately, especially as they’ll fit a couple of my 2025 reading challenge prompts!

A Language of Dragons ⇢ 15%

I’m reading the ARC for this upcoming YA fantasy (pub day 7 January). Since the pub day is next week, I still have time to read it and for once I’m ahead of the ARC game, lol. I don’t have many thoughts on it just yet but the action has picked up quickly and I hope to get more into it today!

I’m really not sure what I feel like reading at the moment. I’ve got a couple of buddy reads that are meant to start in January but not sure when so let’s see!

What are you currently reading? I hope you’re enjoying whatever book you’ve picked up, friends!

  1. 5 books? You’ve had a couple of last weeks, Dini! I saw Lunar Boy as one of your tope reads and was curious about it, how nice that it has these reps.

I’m curious about Mackenzie Reed and Alex E. Harrow as authors as well!

Have an amazing year, and I hope you smash all your goals! Starting with a clean slate seems like a great idea.

    • They were all novellas though so quick and easy (and satisfying) reads to power through! 😍 Lunar Boy was incredible. I didn’t think I’d find another book to add to my top 2024 reads but that one really took me by surprise with how emotional it is. It’s fantastic and if you do end up checking it out, I hope you enjoy it 💜 I hope you have an amazing 2025 as well and smash all your goals and read all the fantastic books! ✨

  2. I thought I would read a lot and accomplish things while on vacation as well, but nope. Back to work tomorrow and I still have things undone. Oh, well. Five books is good though, and there was even a five star. Whoo hoo!

    • It definitely felt good to see that there was only one book in the ‘currently reading’ line up! 🤣 Happy New Year as well, Michaela! I feel like it’s been ages since I’ve seen you around (but I’ve also fallen on/off the radar a bit these past few months). I hope you’re doing well and that you have an amazing 2025! 💜

  3. Ahhh The Ten Thousand Doors of January… I feel like this has got to win the award for longest time on your ‘reading next shelf’ lol. I’ve not seen many reviews for A Language of Dragons, so excited to see what you think. I hope you’re having a great start to the new year, Dini 🙂

    • I can’t wait to *finally* read 10K Doors of January (starting it on 10th Jan feels most appropriate, lol)! And it DEFINITELY wins for longest time on my TBR. I’ve said I’d read it so many times but it just never felt like the right moment. Glad it’s happening now 😍 I had mixed feelings about A Language of Dragons, mostly because of the protagonist. I get why she’s written the way she is but my gosh, it made for a trying read, haha. It wasn’t bad though, I ended up giving it 3.5-4 stars! I hope you also have a great start to the year, Becky! 💜
