The 2024 Mid-Year Check-In Tag

Somehow we have already made it to the mid-year mark of 2024. Where have the months gone? I feel like I say it ever year now but the past six months have felt too long and somehow not long enough. How quickly are the next six months going to pass before it’s time again to usher in a new year? But I digress…

Making it to June means it’s time to bring out one of my favourite annual tags: The Mid-Year Check-In!

I’ve surprised myself with how many books I’ve read so far this year, especially because this time last year, I was woefully “behind” and feeling overwhelmed by my reading goals. That’s why I lowered my Goodreads Reading Challenge this year to 100 books but taking a look at my stats, I’m currently 37 books ahead of schedule.

I can’t remember the last time that happened! 😂 I don’t want to jinx myself because I feel like the next several months will be hectic but if I do reach my goal early, I don’t think I will increase it and I’ll be chill instead, lol.

Book covers are linked to my reviews if you’re curious to read my thoughts!

Best book you’ve read so far in 2024?

Have I mentioned that I’m terrible at choosing “bests”? 😬 I’m going for the best three and even that’s going to be a struggle, I think!

Best sequel so far of 2024?

I’m going to go with Storm of Locusts by Rebecca Roanhorse. I love this series and I’m bummed that we’re stuck on book two for the foreseeable future as the series has been put on hold. The plot was intense, the character arcs were fantastic and thankfully, everything was wrapped up nicely.

New release you haven’t read yet but want to?

Again, there’s no lack of options to choose from but considering how excited I was about getting my hands on this release (and yet I still haven’t read it!) I’m going with A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams.

Most anticipated release for the second half of 2024?

I stumbled across this on one of my rare browses through NetGalley’s shelves. I took a chance and requested it and was surprised as heck that I actually got it granted, since that never usually happens, lol. I’m so excited to read House of Frank by Kay Synclaire.

Biggest disappointment?

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang was one of my most anticipated 2024 releases but I was so disappointed by it. It just fell flat and didn’t work for me.

Biggest surprise?

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson had been on my TBR for ages and of course, I thought I would like it but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. It was a poignant and deeply emotional read!

Favourite new author (Debut or new to you)?

I first heard about Grace Callaway and her historical romances on romance Twitter and I was not let down! Her books are emotional, funny, extremely sexy, action-packed, and overall, wonderful historical romps!

Newest fictional crush?

I don’t really do “fictional crushes” but if I did… Mad Rogan from the Hidden Legacy Series by Ilona Andrews would be at the top. This man… 🥵😮‍💨🤭💜

Newest favourite character?

Another tough one to pick because… I’ve met so many amazing characters this year. Here are just a few I’ve loved so much:

Book that made you cry?

I’m an emotional reader so I’ve cried a lot but these books made me ugly, ugly cry…

Book that made you happy?

I loved The Exception to the Rule by Christina Lauren so much! It may only be 101 pages but it swept me up in the romance and hope. It made me feel so giddy! 😍

Favourite book to movie/TV adaptation that you saw this year?

Uh, well, I guess it would be The Apothecary Diaries by Natsu Hyūga? It’s originally a light novel made into an anime. I love the anime so much!

Favourite review you’ve written this year?

I haven’t written a whole lot of reviews after the first few months of this year but I enjoyed writing these:

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)?

I purchased the Bergman Brothers Series by Chloe Liese on Illumicrate and I love them so much 😍

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

There are so many books I want to read before the year ends but these are a few that have been on my backlist for ages and I want to pick them up soon!

And that’s it for the end of the 2024 mid-year check-in! How has your year of reading been so far? Have you read any of these or are they on your TBR?

  1. Where has the year gone?! I hadn’t even realized yet that the end of June meant it was time to do mid-year check-ins. It looks like your year has been awesome so far, though. I hope the latter half of 2024 is great for you, too. 🙂

  2. I loved seeing your answers to this tag! 🥰 Especially as it features loving More Happy Than Not, when I read this book I was surprised by how much I loved it. It felt like such a personal story and I actually didn’t expect the reveal. An amazing debut book!

Addie LaRue was close to making me cry, it was Henry’s chapter explaining why he made his deal that got me, ouch! 😢

Wow, those Afterlight Chloe Liese books look beautiful! 😍

    Happy reading!

    • Thanks, Sophie! I can’t believe that’s Silvera’s debut! Like, absolutely gut wrenchingly good! 😂 I knew it was going to be emotional but I didn’t think it would hit me that hard by the end but woof, shoulda expected it, lol. Same with Addie LaRue. Henry’s chapter had me BAWLING! Gah, it was so painful but in the best way. I love those two 🥹

  3. Your year of reading looks impressive to me! I haven’t read anywhere close to this number of books. 🙂 I think I’ve seen ‘Addie’ on some lists as a book people like or anticipate, and I’ve heard SO many positive things about Amy Harmon’s novels. One of these days I MUST read one. 🙂 Hope you meet your goal and enjoy a chiller rest of the year in reading once you do.

    • Thank you! Addie was pretty hyped around the year it released and I think it’s continued to be well-loved since then. I’m happy to join the ranks of people who love the book cos it’s really something! 😍 I’ve got a few of Harmon’s books on my TBR cos I’ve heard lots of good things about them. I hope to finally read my first book by her this year. I hope you enjoy Harmon’s books whenever you try one! Hope you enjoy your reads for the rest of the year 🙂

  4. I need to remember to do this ASAP! I’ve read all but one of your favorites. Divine Rivals is probably on my list too!! Ugh, what a bummer about the disappointment. I had that one on my TBR but I’ll take it off. I hope you reach your goal, but you are not far away!!!

    • Can’t wait to see your answers for this one 😍 Yeah, I’m bummed about the disappointment too especially cos it was the IC book of the month and while the edition is absolutely stunning, I hate that I didn’t find the book equally so! 😂

      • Mine went up yesterday, I think. haha. I don’t even remember! All the days are blurring together. I know, I feel you on disappointments. I feel like I’ve had more of that this year than any year prior!

  5. Where has the first half of the year gone? Crazy that it’s the end of June already. But that’s a good reminder… I need to finish up my mid-year post! I think I’ll schedule it for tomorrow.

I need to read Klune’s The Extraordinaries, too! It’s been on my TBR for way too long now.

  6. You are doing amazing with your reading challenge, and it looks like you read a lot of great books, too. I loved that CLo novella as well. It made me feel the feels and for something so short, it seemed so complete.

  8. Wow 84 books already is fantastic, well done!! I still haven’t set my goal as I didn’t want to get stressed when it told me I was behind. And now I can’t actually remember what I wanted to put it as 🙈

Ooh I absolutely adore Addie LaRue and can’t wait to reread it one day 😍 Divine Rivals is still on my TBR but it’s one (of admittedly an impossible number) of the books I hope to get to this year.

I still need to start that Roanhorse series but I think I’m going to reread Black Sun then finish that trilogy first as it’s complete (and I loved it so I have no clue how I haven’t picked up book two already.I’m so sorry to hear that Wicked Gods fell flat for you. It was one of my most anticipated books of the year too.

Although I haven’t gotten to it yet.I haven’t heard of the Bergman Brothers series but those hidden covers are gorgeous and I love that the sprayed edges form a picture 😍

  11. I really enjoy seeing everyone’s responses to this tag. You are doing okay, considering life has been so up and down for you this year, Dini. I also have The Lovesong of Benny Lament on my TBR and need to read or listen to it. Thanks for reminding me about it. That’s too bad about Roanhouse’s series. Hopefully things will change and you will be able to enjoy more in that series in the near future. I hope the latter part of this year is a wonderful 6 months for you!
