#WWWWednesday: 3 January 2024

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last week, I’ve managed to finish four books.

The Season of Secrets by Q.B. Tyler ★★★★☆
Ooh, this age-gap taboo office erotic romance surprised me! It was instalove and very steamy (obvi) but it was also sweet and I loved the low-angst, low-drama and healthy communication in it!

Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White (Song of the Last Kindgom #2) by Amélie Wen Zhao ★★★★☆
This is a satisfying conclusion to this action-packed duology based on Chinese mythology. Wen Zhao fleshes out this world even further and we learn more about its history and culture. The romance was also achingly bittersweet but oddly, somewhat hopeful, too. My review is up tomorrow!

Sheets (Sheets #1) by Brenna Thummler ★★★★☆
Oh, I was so fooled by this cutesy cover. This is an intense middle-grade graphic novel about death, grief, and coping. My heart went out to Marjorie and Wendell! Despite the heavy themes, I’m glad that I read it and can’t wait to read more from this series.

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel ★★★★★
I’ve found my first 5-star read of 2024! This gave me strong vibes a la The Chronicles of St. Mary’s and Cloud Atlas, which is one of my all-time favourites. I’d go so far as to say it’s “cosy” science fiction and I loved St. John Mandel’s writing. This was my first book by her and won’t be my last!

The Winner’s Curse ⇢ 29%

I’ve never read this series and it was one of my hard-to-explain purchases a couple of years ago when I splurged for the Illumicrate editions? Don’t get me wrong, they might be one of the most gorgeous editions on my shelf but what was I thinking? 😂 I hope I love it—so far, so good though!

Night Hawk ⇢ 33%

I started this ebook on a whim last night after my eyes got tired reading my physical copy of The Winner’s Curse. It’s refreshing to read historical romance from BIPOC perspectives and their history as well! I think Jenkins just might become a new favourite this year…

I’m looking at some of these as options but it will entirely depend on my mood!

What are you currently reading? Have you read any of these books or are they also on your TBR? Happy reading, friends!

  1. Oh, I loved The Winner’s Curse when I read it! I hope you end up loving the rest of it. You’ve got 4 books down already and that’s amazing. Remember two years ago when we read something like 40 books that one January?!? haha

  2. Three days into the new year, and you have a five-star read. WHOO HOO! I am also excited to see Lenni & Margot on your possible TBR. That book! I got like three of my IRL people to read that book (proud of that), and they loved it.

  3. I’ve been meaning to pick up one of Miss Bev’s books for some time, as she is quite the legend! I just don’t know where to start. I’ve been on a Red Dead Redemption 2 kick lately, so maybe I’ll track down one of her westerns.

Gosh, the Winner’s Curse? That brings back memories. Not of reading it, but seeing it around. I gave it a quick google and it’s 10 years old this year. How time flies!

I’m currently at the start of the third at of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and have just started The 13th Vampire by Alice Hemming, a middle grade vampire novel.
