#WWWWednesday: 11 October 2023

Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

Since last Wednesday, I’ve finished five books. It wasn’t the *best* reading week but it could’ve been worse!

The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest ★★★½
I ended up having quite mixed feelings about this book. It started off strong—I was immediately reeled in by the set-up and their email exchanges, but following that, I feel like the story slowed down too much. I also struggled with their chemistry cos I wanted more from it! I did like Lily and Nick though and I appreciated their journeys.

Scoring off the Field (WAGS #2) by Naima Simone ★★★★★
This was a fun, angsty and steamy friends-to-lovers erotic romance. Simone knows how to turn up the heat and create some great chemistry and sexual tension between her characters. She makes 200+ pages pass in a blink!

Hard Knocks (Practice Perfect #2) by Ruby Lang ★★★☆☆
Lang is a new-to-me author and though it wasn’t love at first read, I’m curious to read more by this author! I had mixed feelings about Hard Knocks. I loved that this wasn’t your typical hockey romance and it was refreshing! But the FMC was too chaotic for me and she says ableist things that go unchallenged. I loved Adam and how he grounded her though!

Fever (McCalls #1) by Elizabeth Lowell ★★☆☆☆
Sometimes I really question the books mentioned on the Fated Mates podcast. I really… Did not like this book and would not recommend it even though it was technically well-written and Lowell does an amazing job infusing that sexual tension. But this MMC made me ANGRY like never before. I hated it. This book also does not age well, lol. 😬

A Bright Heart by Kate Chenli ★★★½
I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this YA fantasy debut! It had a lot of rough moments but I enjoyed the story and characters, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Read my review!

  • The Dating Playbook21% → This is moving but I feel like I want something a bit more engaging and fast-paced… Let’s see if I don’t put it down for something else for now!
  • Shades of Magic Vol. 1: The Steel Prince30% → I stopped reading and never got back to this. I don’t know why it’s so short! Sigh, my brain… 😂
  • Heartbreaker18% → The optimal mood has not happened yet!

More ✨spooky-season-but-make-it-lite reads✨ and hopefully, soon, all the BIPOC reads for the #23for23 challenge, too!?! 🤞🏽

What are you currently reading? Have you read any of these books or are they also on your TBR? Happy reading, friends!

  1. Too bad you are in a reading mood and can’t get into your books. Hopefully your upcoming reads will spark and you will get lost in one of them, Dini.

  3. I’m reading That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon now. I thought I was going to put it down because I’ve been in a weird reading mood lately. If it doesn’t grab me right away I’ve been putting it down (I could relate to what you were saying). Fortunately it grabbed me before the 10% mark.

  4. Looks like you have some fun reading ahead, Dini! I’m intrigued to see what you think of That One Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon… I’ve heard really mixed reviews about the series so far. Hope you enjoy all your reads 🙂

  5. First, you have me curious about that WAGS series. I haven’t read that author. You make that book sound good. Can I jump in there or need to read #1?
Second, I don’t think I read that Lowell book, but I used to listen to a bunch of her books when I was commuting like 15 years ago. (I’m aging myself too much here.) I used to love her St. Kilda Consulting, Rarities Unlimited, and Donavan series as well as some of her standalone romantic suspense. I have no idea how they would age. Sorry this one didn’t work out for you.
Third, I’m super excited for you to read Woke Up Like This. I really hope you love it.

  6. Well, thank goodness for Simone because this was a rather weak batch for you. I read a Lang book a while back. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. It was lacking something for me. I hope all your current books pick up for you.
