So, we’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is: Books I’d gladly throw into the ocean
Well, this was a pretty fun topic! Thankfully I have Goodreads to remind me of all the books that I’ve rated one-two stars and these are the books that I’ll feature in today’s post. I’m gonna keep it simple and just link the book titles to the Goodreads pages. Most of these I read ages ago and so I didn’t actually write reviews for them but they are also books I will never ever revisit so it is what it is? 😂 I’m really not good at chucking books (just thinking of all the books I’ve read once and didn’t fully enjoy that are still sitting on my shelf but I’d gladly do away with these!
I’m also gonna say: please don’t take offense if one of these was a favourite of yours or if you really enjoyed it—we all have different tastes, and we can’t like all the books we read, right? On that note, let’s get to it:

Den of Vipers
I had to say: I just finished this book and it’s officially the worst book I’ve ever read. I really really really don’t recommend it (unless you hate yourself which clearly I do for inflicting it on myself lol-sob why) 😭😂
Tess D’Urbervilles
The Casual Vacancy
The Cuckoo’s Calling
Hot Dog Girl

American Psycho
Into the Water
Gone Girl
Lord of the Flies
One Hundred Years of Solitude

Do you find it easy to get rid of books that you don’t like or are you like me? 😂 What books would you chuck in the ocean? Any of these? 🤪

I’m so sad that Hot Dog Girl wasn’t better. The cover is so adorable!

I KNOW! Oh my goodness, that book legit made me so angry because I was so disappointed with the MC. Just Grr. No! 😫

I can 100% understand Lord of the Flies being on here. I haven’t read it since high school and I liked it then, but I have had zero desire to revisit it.

I read it in school as well and I generally liked the required reading we had to do but I don’t think I would’ve finished LoTF if it hadn’t been assigned 🤣 I struggled so hard LOL

I haven’t read any of these, but they’re so popular it’s interesting to hear a different point of view! Great list 🙂

Yep, I was pretty disappointed when I struggled to enjoy many of these. I think the worst let down was 100 Years of Solitude cos I was so ready to love it 😂

😂 there’s no disappointment quite like crushed expectations!

I was never able to get into The Casual Vacancy.
Thanks for stopping by earlier!

Yeah, from what I remember (which honestly isn’t very much cos I disliked it so) it was *really* dry and *so* boring 😭

I found the first half of Gone Girl to be very boring. I was hooked once the twist came, though.

I don’t think I’ve ever hated characters as much as I hated the ones in Gone Girl. I mean, I know that was probably the point but wow, it got to the point where even the crazy twist couldn’t redeem it for me 😂 I know my opinion is in the minority though! Lol

I remember reading Lord of the Flies in school and wasn’t a fan then and have no interest in revisiting it now. Excellent choices as most likely I will be avoiding some of these haha.

Yep, it was a school read for me too and I *hated* it (which was honestly a ‘first’ for me cos I enjoyed most of the required reading at school! I would’ve defo DNF’d it if it wasn’t assigned 😂

Same! I remember doing everything I could to avoid reading the assigned chapters haha

I LOVED Gone Girl the first time I read it…but the longer I sit with it and think about the actual content of the story the more and more it rubs me the wrong way.

A lot of people love the book I just really struggle to enjoy books with such detestable characters and I couldn’t get past it! I didn’t even watch the movie cos I hated the book so much! 😂

Lord of the Flies made my list too. I really dislike that one. And Gone Girl – I had so many friends rave about that book & I did not enjoy it at all.

Omg, I’m so glad you felt the same cos I know my opinion about Gone Girl is defo in the minority? It was so awful 🙈

I never did Girl in Water after reading Girl on the Train- I guess I liked Train okay (didn’t love it) but hemmed and hawed about her next one and just… never did. Gone Girl too I guess didn’t wow me.

I didn’t read Girl on the Train before Girl in the Water cos I had a feeling I wouldn’t enjoy it with all the comparisons to Gone Girl—I definitely think I made the right decision in not picking it up 😂

I’m not alone! I actually DNF’d Gone Girl and felt like I was the only person who wasn’t a fan. I don’t even remember what exactly made it so I didn’t like the story, but I remember being bored and having a hard time liking any of the characters.

Oh, it’s so nice to find other people who also didn’t like Gone Girl! I swear I was in the minority with my opinion cos so many people rave about it! It was the characters that made it awful for me cos they were HORRIBLE people—like, I genuinely cannot think of more unlikable characters (I mean, I could but y’know… Haha) 🙈

I’ve heard so many bad things about Den of the Viper, lol. Glad I never wanted to pick it up!

SMART DECISION, Joanna! I want a refund for all the hours of my life that I wasted on that book 😂

Ah yeah Casual Vacancy really wasn’t my thing either. So boring. I did like A Cuckoo’s Calling but I’m not reading on with that series for obvious reasons 😛

Totally agree—SO boring. SO dry. So unlikeable but people were raving about it (probs cos of who the author is more than anything) and that’s why I gave Cuckoo’s Calling a try but sadly found that it fell so flat for me too. I’m honestly glad I didn’t like them (also for obvious reasons lol) 😜

I TOTALLY understand why you didn’t like Gone Girl. I actually liked it because I have a psych degree and the craziness was really interesting to me. haha. I mean she was cray… but I can see why people don’t like it. The characters are hard to enjoy! I haven’t tried any of the other Rowling books and I’m glad!!

I haven’t read a book by Thomas Hardy, but it’s RARE that I like one of his stories as a film/TV adaptation. I should have used my low-star ratings as a guide for this topic! Why didn’t I think of this!? 😀 Thanks for visiting my topic on this week.
