Top 5 Saturday: Books with Two Authors

Welcome back to another Top 5 Saturday! Just in case you don’t know Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books and it’s where we list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favourite books, books you loved/hated) based on the week’s topic. You can see the upcoming schedule at the end of my post 🙂 This week’s topic is actually: books with two authors.

I think the first book that I read written by two authors was the Illuminae Files. Actually, it was probably Christina Lauren before I even knew they were two people 😂 But I don’t read a lot of books that are written by two authors although I do have a surprising number of them on my TBR! I’m gonna keep this introduction short and simple and there’s really no need for a lengthy introduction 😉

(book covers are linked to the Goodreads pages!)

Book cover: The Other Side of the Sky

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SKY BY AMIE KAUFMAN & MEAGAN SPOONER

Prince North’s home is in the sky, in a gleaming city held aloft by intricate engines, powered by technology. Nimh is the living goddess of her people on the Surface, responsible for providing answers, direction—hope.
North’s and Nimh’s lives are entwined—though their hearts can never be. Linked by a terrifying prophecy and caught between duty and fate, they must choose between saving their people or succumbing to the bond that is forbidden between them.

Book cover: Punching the Air

PUNCHING THE AIR BY IBI ZOBOI & YUSEF SALAAM

The story that I thought
was my life
didn’t start on the day
I was born

Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he’s seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighbourhood escalates into tragedy. “Boys just being boys” turns out to be true only when those boys are white.
The story that I think
will be my life
starts today
Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?

Book cover: Aurora Burning

AURORA BURNING (AURORA CYCLE #2) BY AMIE KAUFMAN & JAY KRISTOFF

Our heroes are back… kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in the epic series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxy’s best hope for survival.
First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.
Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.
And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.
Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.
When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.
Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes—and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.

Book cover: In A Holidaze

IN A HOLIDAZE BY CHRISTINA LAUREN

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions. But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.
The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Book cover: Yes No Maybe So

YES NO MAYBE SO BY BECKY ALBERTALLI & AISHA SAEED

YES
Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya.
NO
Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her.
MAYBE SO
Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybeit’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.

    • I love the Illuminae Files by Kaufman and Kristoff. It was my introduction to both of those authors and I fell hard into love with that series 😍 The Aurora Cycle is shaping up to also be just as good (although I’ve only read the first book lol) I hope you enjoy whichever you pick up!

  1. The name Amie Kaufman sounds familiar but I’m blanking a little bit on why at the moment. It’s not any of these books you’ve mentioned but I just can’t put my finger on it. The whole concept of two writers always confuses me a little bit. Who writes what and how does it actually work, you know what I mean? Great post 🙂 I’m going to go comb my selves looking for books with two authors now!

    • She’s the author who wrote the Illuminae Files series with Jay Kristoff and she wrote another two series (I think) with Spooner. I think it’s called the Starbound series? I definitely know what you mean about the idea of two authors writing together. I’m very curious to know how it works! Sometimes it’s obvious who has written which section, especially if you’ve read their individual work(s), but other times I have a hard time tellin. And I really do wonder how they make it work! 😂 It’s pretty cool though when it’s such a success! Lol

      • Ohhh yeah I think she’s one of the writers of These Unbroken Stars…which I still never finished. lol. I would imagine writing with another author would be difficult to keep fair – depending on how the writing is divided up – and in many cases difficult to tell who wrote what when it’s all said and done after editing and all that. I absolutely agree it’s cool though when it works well. I think it would be a really cool strategy to use when writing a story with alternating perspectives so the different characters actually have unique voices.

        • Oh no! Haha that book/series is still on my TBR but I have seen quite a few mixed reviews. Didn’t enjoy it or just wasn’t in the right mood for it? Ooh yes, that’s a really great idea–with the alternating perspectives and different voices. Makes me wonder if that’s how they’ve done it because thinking back to it now I think most of the books I’ve read with two authors did always have alternating perspectives!
