So, we’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is: Books that Give Off Summer Vibes (submitted by Kristin @ Lukten av Trykksverte)

Prompts to do with seasons are always a bit tough for me since I live in the tropics and it’s basically summer the year round 😂 But I can get on board with the idea of summer! Thinking of books that give off summer vibes obviously means a lot of cover judging, right? I mean, what catches my eye when I think of summer vibes are bright and vivid splashes of colour leaning towards pinks, yellows and blues. Maybe some flowers, palm trees, beaches (this is sounding cliche, isn’t it? LOL)… In terms of the plot, I think lighter and maybe even shorter reads would do the trick. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with more serious topics being discussed of course but just thinking of that blazing sun slowing down my brain waves definitely has me thinking the lighter the better!
So after a little bit of digging through my TBR and this slightly long-winded post introduction 😂 I’ve come up with this list of 10 books on my TBR that give off summer vibes:

It’s the summer of 1955. For Ethan Harper, a biracial kid raised mostly by his white father, race has always been a distant conversation. When he’s sent to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle in small-town Alabama, his Blackness is suddenly front and center, and no one is shy about making it known he’s not welcome there. Except for Juniper Jones. The town’s resident oddball and free spirit, she’s everything the townspeople aren’t―open, kind, and full of acceptance. Armed with two bikes and an unlimited supply of root beer floats, Ethan and Juniper set out to find their place in a town that’s bent on rejecting them. As Ethan is confronted for the first time by what it means to be Black in America, Juniper tries to help him see the beauty in even the ugliest reality, and that even the darkest days can give rise to an invincible summer.
I mean, besides having ‘summer’ in the title, the cover for The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones absolutely screams summer it with the mustard-yellow and bright colourful flowers 😍 It’s also out this coming summer (16 June 2020) so be on the look out 😉
Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after. When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle…. But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself. Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve.
The cover for Felix Ever After is just insanely gorgeous — I can’t even. If I knew nothing about the story I’d still buy this book based on the cover alone! I mean, wouldn’t you do the same? 😂
With her daughter to care for and her abuela to help support, high school senior Emoni Santiago has to make the tough decisions, and do what must be done. The one place she can let her responsibilities go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Still, she knows she doesn’t have enough time for her school’s new culinary arts class, doesn’t have the money for the class’s trip to Spain — and shouldn’t still be dreaming of someday working in a real kitchen. But even with all the rules she has for her life — and all the rules everyone expects her to play by — once Emoni starts cooking, her only real choice is to let her talent break free.
Omgoodness, I really don’t know why With the Fire On High is still on my bleeding TBR. It’s driving me crazy. I need to just read it so why don’t I do it?! I’m such a nugget of a panda. Although the cover colour is more ‘autumn’ with the red, the tropical/summery fruits definitely screams summer!
A wedding planner left at the altar. Yeah, the irony isn’t lost on Carolina Santos, either. But despite that embarrassing blip from her past, Lina’s managed to make other people’s dreams come true as a top-tier wedding coordinator in DC. After impressing an influential guest, she’s offered an opportunity that could change her life. There’s just one hitch… she has to collaborate with the best (make that worst) man from her own failed nuptials. Tired of living in his older brother’s shadow, marketing expert Max Hartley is determined to make his mark with a coveted hotel client looking to expand its brand. Then he learns he’ll be working with his brother’s whip-smart, stunning—absolutely off-limits—ex-fiancée. And she loathes him. If they can survive the next few weeks and nail their presentation without killing each other, they’ll both come out ahead. Except Max has been public enemy number one ever since he encouraged his brother to jilt the bride, and Lina’s ready to dish out a little payback of her own. But even the best laid plans can go awry, and soon Lina and Max discover animosity may not be the only emotion creating sparks between them. Still, this star-crossed couple can never be more than temporary playmates because Lina isn’t interested in falling in love and Max refuses to play runner-up to his brother ever again…
Okay, The Worst Best Man is definitely on this list more because of the genre than the cover screaming ‘summer’ (although all that blue!); but who doesn’t love reading romcoms while by the beach/pool?!
Eighteen-year-old Devon longs for two things.
The stars. And the boy she fell in love with last summer.
When Ashton breaks Devon’s heart at the end of the most romantic and magical summer ever, she thinks her heart will never heal again. But over the course of the following year, Devon finds herself slowly putting the broken pieces back together. Now it’s senior year, and she’s determined to enjoy every moment of it as she prepares for a future studying the galaxies. That is, until Ashton shows up on the first day of school. Can she forgive him and open her heart again? Or are they doomed to repeat history? From debut author, Ronni Davis, comes a stunning novel about passion, loss, and the power of first love.
The pastel colours and the beach cover photo definitely makes When the Stars Lead to You a summer-vibe read! I’ve heard some really good things about this book and thanks to this weekly meme I’ve remembered it’s still on my TBR so thanks TTT! 😂
A fierce coming-of-age verse novel about identity and the power of drag, from acclaimed UK poet and performer Dean Atta. Perfect for fans of Elizabeth Acevedo, Jason Reynolds, and Kacen Callender.
Michael is a mixed-race gay teen growing up in London. All his life, he’s navigated what it means to be Greek-Cypriot and Jamaican—but never quite feeling Greek or Black enough.
As he gets older, Michael’s coming out is only the start of learning who he is and where he fits in. When he discovers the Drag Society, he finally finds where he belongs—and the Black Flamingo is born. Told with raw honesty, insight, and lyricism, this debut explores the layers of identity that make us who we are—and allow us to shine.
I mean… This gorgeous cover of The Black Flamingo definitely screams summer to me! Gah, it’s such a gorgeous book and it sounds like such a powerful read. Very excited to pick this up 🙂
Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.
With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.
This is another one that’s more genre than cover, although there’s no denying that the colours on the cover of The Belles is so vibrant and eye-catching — the flowers also do give that summer vibe! There are some pretty mixed reviews for this one but I admit to being very curious 👀
Queenie Jenkins can’t cut a break. Well, apart from one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That’s definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Stuck between a boss who doesn’t seem to see her, a family who don’t seem to listen (if it’s not Jesus or water rates, they’re not interested), and trying to fit in two worlds that don’t really understand her, it’s no wonder she’s struggling.
She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life?
I love the different coloured covers for Queenie! It honestly just made me want to read this book even more when I first heard about it 😂 Such vibrant colours that undoubtedly scream summer to me.
Norris Kaplan is clever, cynical, and quite possibly too smart for his own good. A black French Canadian, he knows from watching American sitcoms that those three things don’t bode well when you are moving to Austin, Texas. Plunked into a new high school and sweating a ridiculous amount from the oppressive Texas heat, Norris finds himself cataloging everyone he meets: the Cheerleaders, the Jocks, the Loners, and even the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Making a ton of friends has never been a priority for him, and this way he can at least amuse himself until it’s time to go back to Canada, where he belongs. Yet, against all odds, those labels soon become actual people to Norris. Be it loner Liam, who makes it his mission to befriend Norris, or Madison the beta cheerleader, who is so nice that it has to be a trap. Not to mention Aarti the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, who might, in fact, be a real love interest in the making. He even starts playing actual hockey with these Texans. But the night of the prom, Norris screws everything up royally. As he tries to pick up the pieces, he realizes it might be time to stop hiding behind his snarky opinions and start living his life—along with the people who have found their way into his heart.
I remember hearing about The Field Guide to the North American Teenager and immediately wanting to read it. It sounds like one of those feel good YA contemporaries that might be completely predictable but not in a bad way; plus, I love the eye-catching cover of this book!
A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.
Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living showing other women how to do the same. A mother to two small girls, she started out as a blogger and has quickly built herself into a confidence-driven brand. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night. Seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, a security guard at their local high-end supermarket accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make it right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix’s desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix’s past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other.
There has been a fair bit of hype around Such A Fun Age and I honestly wasn’t sure I wanted to read it when I first heard about it… But the more it came up the more curious I became and then I saw it on sale pre-Covid and immediately scooped it up 🤷🏻♀️ Love the white cover with a brightly coloured title.

So, that’s it for the books that give me a summer vibe. All of these are on my TBR and I’m excited to read them! Have you read any of them? What are books that give you summer vibes?

Great list! These all look so summery – especially With the Fire On High, which is still on my TBR, too.

I must admit to being just a little jealous of your tropical home. It must be wonderful to have so much sunlight all year round. (I have seasonal depression in the winter when Ontario gets very little sunlight).
And I really need to read Queenie sometime!

It is nice to be perpetually in summer but I do miss the cold environment sometimes — I’m one of those silly people that like the cold more than the heat (although I do love my sunlight)! 😅 I can imagine that it must be really hard in the winter that ‘far’ north! I hope you enjoy Queenie, Lydia 🙂

Ah, I know call me crazy but I do miss the cold weather often having moved back to a country that’s in perpetual summer 😂 We get some “cooler” temps when it’s winter down under and the cool winds come up, but I think those temps would be considered pretty hot where you’re at 😂 I hope you enjoy these reads, Mel! ❤

Pretty jealous of your tropical locale! 😉 The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones is getting lots of buzz. I can’t wait to hear what you think about it. I’ve had Queenie and Such a Fun Age on my tbr since I first heard about them. I was bummed I didn’t get arcs for them. I need to pick them up soon! Great list! ❤

I’m really intrigued by The Belles. It doesn’t sound like one of those YA’s that I normally read… But I’m definitely curious!

I live in Arizona, where it’s basically always summer as well. Ironically, I can’t stand the heat. Ugh. Thank goodness for a/c and a backyard swimming pool or I would never survive!
You picked some great colorful covers. I’ve read WITH THE FIRE ON HIGH, which I really liked, but that’s it from your list. A bunch of them are on my TBR mountain chain somewhere, though 🙂
Happy TTT!

Same here, Susan! Haha I mean, I can stand it but I much prefer the cold to the heat so it’s a bummer to live in the tropics (although there are plenty of days I do appreciate it and I’m sure I’d miss it if I lived in a country/city that’s always gloomy hah)! Big yes to A/C! 😂 And… It’s so easy for books to get lost under TBR mountain. I know it happens all the time to me LOL

I usually love seasonal prompts but I always tend to struggle with summer prompts because the weather in summer is so bizarre where I live. I have With the Fire on High on my TBR too, but I keep forgetting to figure out where I can put it on my immediate TBR.
