Yayaya, HAPPY FRIYAY, book lovers and friends 😍We’re back with another First Lines Friday! This is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are THE RULES:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:
“The night Marcella died, she made her husband’s favorite dinner.
Not because it was a special occasion, but because it wasn’t–spontaneity, people insisted, was the secret to love.”

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

Okay, okay, calm yourself mate...

*drumroll please!*

The book is: Vengeful (Villains #2) by V.E. Schwab
The sequel to VICIOUS, V.E. Schwab’s first adult novel.
Sydney once had Serena—beloved sister, betrayed enemy, powerful ally. But now she is alone, except for her thrice-dead dog, Dol, and then there’s Victor, who thinks Sydney doesn’t know about his most recent act of vengeance.
Victor himself is under the radar these days—being buried and re-animated can strike concern even if one has superhuman powers. But despite his own worries, his anger remains. And Eli Ever still has yet to pay for the evil he has done.

Have you read Vengeful or is it on your TBR?

Vengeful is in my TBR! I’m hoping to read all of Schwab’s books at some point, but I don’t really know where to start.

Ooh that’s a toughie! I started with her ADSOM series, moved on to Monsters of Verity, tried The Archived but got too spooked so I put it down (LOL) but then picked up Vicious and loved it! If you’re more into adult fantasy I would start with Vicious but it is quite different to her other stuff. I loved ADSOM though! I still have quite a few more of her books to get to but I just love her 🥰

I’ve heard good things about this and the first book! Still haven’t picked them up but I want to.

I really enjoyed Vicious and pretty much sped through it after a certain point. These were such deliciously morally grey characters! I loved it 🥰

Vicious sounds so good, still planning to read it or at least try something by V.E. Schwab.

I loved Vicious and I’m excited to read Vengeful although I heard it wasn’t as great as the first book. The characters were fantastic–never thought I’d be rooting for villains, but I guess I love the slightly less villainous villain? So much moral greyness! Haha

OMG I KNEW THIS ONE! Did I win? What do I win? Please tell me it’s a third book in this series, because, um, I need one. I love Vicious, and I enjoyed Vengeful … not as much as Vicious, but it depends what you go in expecting. I wanted more Eli and Victor, and instead, Vengeful expanded the world an introduced new characters, which is also fun. Just not what I’d expected.

Yeah, I think that’s why I’m not dying to pick up Vengeful because I LOVE the original cast of characters and I’d probably want them the whole time? LOL I’ve heard lots of people say the same thing as you about this one though… Still keen to check it out though… Just not racing for it 😅

I think that was my biggest disappointment. I fell in love with Eli and Victor and I just wanted my boys in the second book, which is totally selfish, but I never claimed to not be.
