#TopTenTuesday: It’s a little bit frightening…

We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is: Genre freebie (Pick any genre you’d like and build a list around it. You can even narrow the topic if you’d like, such as: thrillers with unreliable narrators, fantasy romance with fae characters, or historical romance with suspense elements.)

I don’t know why but the minute I saw the “freebie” part of this week’s prompt, I immediately forgot every single book I’ve ever read. It’s like my brain just went: Books?! What are books?! So, with that brain block in place, I went the fairly “easy” route and decided to highlight books on my TBR from a genre that I rarely, if ever, read from: horror! 😱 I’m 99% sure that all of these are classified as horrors (of some kind) but all I know is that they’re all steps outside of my comfort zone because I’m generally way too scaredy to read horror-ful things. I don’t know why so many of these have piqued my interest this year but I’m hoping to give them a read at some point in the near (or distant) future.

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones
Good Girls Don’t Die by Christina Henry
The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay

Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews
Strange Pictures by Uketsu
Grave Yard Shift by M. L. Rio
Dead Silence by S. A. Barnes
Bat Eater by Kylie Lee Baker

Have you read any of these “horror” books or are they also on your TBR?

  1. Dini reading horror?! Have you been body snatched?! Is this your cry for help?! Should I send someone?! xD

If it makes you feel better, my brain has the same response when it sees freebie topics. It just immediately melts and erases everything.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think Graveyard Shift was too scary. It was just kind of . . . freaky? I also want to read Dead Silence! I’ve heard great things about S.A. Barnes, but I haven’t read their work yet! I hope you enjoy these when you get a chance to read them (hopefully in fully daylight, of course!).

    • I KNOW! WHO EVEN AM I?! *cackling*

But no, seriously, I don’t know what it is but my brain keeps telling me that it wants to check out these books so… I guess we’re gonna check out these books! 😂 Of course, it’ll be happening in FULL daylight, and I won’t be sleeping with all the lights off for the duration of said reads (even though these books won’t ever be opened at night!), but… We’re gonna do it! 🤣

Okay, glad to know that Graveyard Shift wasn’t too spooky. I think I can deal with freaky! I’ve also heard a lot of great things about Barnes and even though I do think those books are going to be way creepier, I’m excited to try their work. I hope you love Dead Silence whenever you check it out!

    • I’m also trying to save most of these reads for end of September/October/early November cos I think they’d be the perfect time to read them—especially since everyone else will also be reading the spooky things!

  2. Oooh some great picks here! I LOVED Bat Eater, easily one of the best books I read last year, and Buffalo Hunter Hunter & Don’t Let the Forest in are favourites too. I have Graveyard Shift on my TBR, but none of the others so I’ll definitely be checking them out.

  3. I totally feel your panic as I feel like the same thing happens to me sometimes too 🙈 it also makes me laugh that as I added Strange Pictures to it when you mentioned it half of these titles are on my current horror TBR 😂  here’s hoping we both enjoy the ones scheduled for buddy reads.

I really want to try a Christina Henry book sometime but have so many titles jotted down to try that I never know where to begin 😅 and that House Of Leaves blurb gave me shivers just reading it 😬 sounds intense.

I’m quite enjoying my horror experiment so far. I’m trying a TBR for sci fi and romance sometime too. Good luck checking out some of your titles too.

    • I’m so glad that we’re reading some of these as buddy reads because I think that would then give me confidence to try and read more on my own. Well, hopefully, anyway! 😂 I’m very excited about the ones we’ve got scheduled though!

I also don’t know where to start with Henry’s books because and I’ve got a few of them on my TBR but I only own two (thankfully, I had some restraint, lol). Honestly, all of the House of Leaves reviews and things that I’ve seen for it have me very scared and confused but also really keen to experience it for myself? Haha, it’s like my brain sees it as a challenge because do people really feel like that after reading it?! I’m excited and terrified to find out!

      • Ah well here’s hoping 🤞🤞 I totally get the fear of reading them on your own as I’m now debating how much Needful Things is going to freak me out when I try it 🙈 yes same here, I’ve heard such fantastic things about them and I’m very intrigued by the picture based premise of Strange Pictures.

Ooh which two do you own? I actually have none but I always seem to add her titles to my yearly releases lists. Oh wow that sounds majorly intense. But I do kind of get the curiosity side of it too. I hope you don’t freak yourself out too much whenever you try it.
