#TopTenTuesday: Animal Companions

We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is: Animal Companions (These animals can be real or fantasy!) (submitted by P.S. I Love Books)

Oh, what a bittersweet topic because I just lost mine yesterday after 15 years being with us. I’m not doing the best right now, but I am doing everything I can to stay occupied—hence why I’m doing this TTT—otherwise, I will keep crying (who am I kidding, I’m still gonna be crying while busy, lol). I found this topic harder than expected, not just because of the subject, but because my brain apparently thinks I’ve never read books with animal companions. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It took a lot of scrolling through my Goodreads to come up with the following ten, and the animal companions in these vary from playing more significant roles in the overall plot to simply existing and bringing comfort and joy to the main characters. 💜 Either way, animal companions are really the best! 🥺

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries Series
Blood Price
A Rival Most Vial
The Golden Compass
Starling House

The Magic Paintbrush
Wolf Gone Wild
Untethered Sky
The Ten Thousand Doors of January
Nevermoor Series

Do you like to read books with animal companions? Who are some of your favourite companions (real or fantasy)?

  1. This must have been a really hard topic for you this week xx
I love a good animal or non human companion. One of my recent favourites is the raven Sol in The Raven Scholar

  2. Oh, no, so sorry for the loss of your furry friend! ❤

I had forgotten that The Ten Thousand Doors of January had an animal companion in it. I guess that book really wasn’t one that stayed with me.

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a furry companion is so hard, especially one that’s been part of the family for so long. I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts and sending good vibes your way.

  4. Hugs from afar, Dini. I’m so sorry about the loss of your furbaby. I recently read a book with a crow as a companion: Twisted Bones by Helen Phifer.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear that you lost your own special animal companion! I do love Shadow from the Emily Wilde series. And I’ve been wanting to read Starling House!

  6. I’m so sorry for your loss! I lost my ragdoll two years ago and I still sometimes cry, so just let it out when you need to. Head butts and purrs from my four gremlins (aka cats).

Starling House was such a good book, too!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  7. I’m so sorry for your loss, losing a pet is awful. They truly are part of the family ❤️❤️

I’ve read a couple of these and really liked the animal companions in them. I’m rereading His Dark Materials soon actually so that I can finally start the companion series before the final one comes out later this year. Why on earth can I not remember the companion in January though 🙈 I loved that book and remember bits of it so vividly and now I’m wondering what else I’ve forgotten since reading it 🤔

One of my favourite book ones will always be Mephi from the Bone Shard Daughter. He’s impossible not to fall for 😍
